  • [Character art update] The great Team Xen redux


    Whoa! Wasn't expecting one of these until after V13, were you? Well, Boy Do I Have A Surprise For You(TM)

     

    For context -- not too long ago I mentioned to Jan that if I had free time I'd like to try and redesign some of the outfits for the Team Xen members, for the heck of it! The designs were thought up on the fly and the generic grunt uniforms were a bit too similar to the original sprites they were edited from, so I wanted to see if I could redo the designs to be more thematically cohesive, while remaining recognizable compared to their old outfits. A few days ago I decided to finally start on them...

     

    ...Only for me to get the urge to actually go through with them and add them in the game.

     

    Sooooooooooooo here's the conversation that followed.

    Now, as you probably know from Rejuv at this point, is that some of the characters have special animation sheets for the overworld, making it harder to get everything done in one go due to having to edit both the default overworld sprites *and* the animation sprites, as well as having to take care of some of the new overworld sprite sheets that are necessary for V13 content. So long story short, OW sprites were the biggest concern -- and therefore the Xen redux would probably have to be added in V13.5.

     

    HOWEVER, since there's a lot of people who will likely start a new file for V13 and would want to play the side stuff in V13.5, I wanted to push for a V13 insert so people would get to see the designs on their fresh playthrough and get the biggest brunt of the work out of the way ASAP, which is the VS/Battle sprites + the official art.

     

    And I'm more than happy to tell you that I got the go ahead to show them off + managed to finish them today -- So here are your redone team Xen members, all neatly tucked into a spoiler so the page isn't long as hell by default!

    (By the way, as a disclaimer: Please note that the sprites might not be the final product that will end up in the game and are subject to changes/improvements!! The official art is final tho :])

    Most notable changes:

    - Zetta's coat is now primarily grey and has added blue & black accents, with the blue being the same color as his old coat.

    - The color of the red used in his outfit is now darker and slightly duller.

    - His undershirt is slightly lighter.

    - His pants are lighter.

    Madelis

    Most notable changes:

    - Redesigned her dress to be more of its own thing rather than a combination of DPPT's Mars' & Jupiter's outfits.

    - She no longer has kneepads, and has added detail on her leggings instead.

    - She now wears small gloves on her hands.

    - Her hair is now consistently in twintails across all of her sprites.

    - The undershirt now has large holes on the sides of the sleeves.

    Most notable changes:

    - Detailed his suit to have red & gold accents.

    - His hair is *slightly* less pointy, and has more fluff in the back. 

    - Changed the color of his shirt to have a lighter grey and a duller red.

    - Shoes have laces now.

    Most notable changes:

    - His shirt has slightly more detail.

    - Changed his boots to have straps rather than being plain boots.

    - Did a bit more with the dual colors on his coat, switching colors around more often.

    - Added black accents on his coat.

    Madame X

    Most notable changes:

    - Her suit has more detail compared to her old sprite, particular on the sides.

    - The boots are now detailed differently + differently colored.

    - She has an additional green gem on her chest.

    - Her cape is more tattered, and now is folded at the collar.

    - Her clothing no longer has X patterns on it.

    - She no longer has bare legs & arms, instead settling for leggings and a long sleeve shirt.

    - Her gloves and boots now have been detailed.

    - Her leggings and vest now are primarily grey, with black accents.

    Cassandra

    Most notable changes:

    - Her jumpsuit is slightly darker, and has more overall detail.

    - The red used for her suit and boots has been made brighter.

    - The belt has been changed to be a dual belt rather than combining into a single belt.

    - The boots now have additional detail as.

    Most notable changes:

    - The color scheme has been changed to have a lighter overall color scheme.

    - The bright red is now reserved for accent while the dull red is used for the shirts & leggings.

    - Added belt pockets.

    - The default male grunt now no longer has a mouthpiece covering his face.

    - The default female grunt now has a ponytail on the side of her head rather than having it at the back.

    Hope y'all are excited to see the designs in the game when V13 comes out! As per usual with these character art posts, the art has been added to the Official Art Thread, as well as icons. No wallpaper updates yet -- that's something that'll have to wait until after V13 is out.

     

    Anyways, that's it for me for real this time -- You probably won't see me post stuff on the blog until after V13 at this point. Just a little while longer y'all, we're getting there!

    They all look amazing! Especially loving the trim you gave to Gearas suit. Also love the Nastasia changes as well as I didn't enjoy her previous outfit much. Thanks for the designs! Can't wait till V13

    Man, Geara and the Grunts having a lighter color scheme's gonna take some getting used to, methinks. Everything else being strict pilish updates is certainly nice, though~

    Zetta is taller than Naved?!?!

    I always pictured Naved being a super tall intimidating dude while I thought Zetta was about as tall as Melia haha.

    I'm keeping my current play through (grinded too many shinies to stop now XD) but I'll definitely do another fresh run once v13 comes out.

    I like how you perfectly managed to get a "I am a tiny lil piece of shtty c*nt" from Gaera's new design, fit him well, too well in fact, now I hate him even more, the prick.

    OMG LOOK AT MADAME X¡¡¡¡¡ I mean, everyone looks fantastic and I am thrilled to see them in game, but Oh. My. God. Madame X was already such a badass design, but that cape.... I simply love it. I cannot wait to see them in game.

    How is this the first time I am seeing this?!  (I really should be around more...)  They look like they have seen shit so many times (Especially Madame X), it's awesome.  They look really great, and I love it!

     

    I will admit, I am gonna miss the old black and red too for most of Xen, but it fits where it is given (like Geara, Cassandra, etc).  Even the grunts look really great!  Are the Death Wings going to get a similar overhaul (Like with the gray and red), or are they going to stay the same?

     

    In the end, the wait will be worth it ten times over.  I will not mind the wait one bit.  Keep up the amazing work, everybody!

    The designs for the deathwings will likely also get a slight overhaul, but likely will be a simple color scheme adjustment + a few other small changes as their designs are already relatively unique as is. It's likely being kept for V13.5 though, due to that they don't really appear as often in the story in comparison to the grunts and admins, plus the workload is high enough as is.

    Torn between hype as hell for a (possible) release soon for v13, and keeping myself in check saying it'll be here when it'll be here lol.

     

    Regardless the art looks fantastic as always, and your and all the devs work is super appreciated.
