  8. Two days ago, at Reborn Inc Headquarters: - Hey we still didn't figure out how to wrap the story up, any idea? - Let's ask the players what they expect, we can steal their ideas and make them think they "guessed" it right! - That's not nice though, poor players - Well give them a T-Shirt or something, whatever makes them feel better

  20. hi so this is gonna get 100% buried we are now all aboard the hype train though so i'm gonna shove some dynamite into the engine core and shoot this thing off the rails so something that i comment on a lot is how i can't play pokemon anymore. it's a great example of a joke that isn't quite a joke- on the one hand it's like "haha lol oh cass ur so funny cuz you make like 100 of these games how can you not like mons", but on the other i'm pretty fuckin burned out on the gameplay. there are times when i definitely am playing the game like it's my job because it's my job. i can only do the mons so much until i lose my desire to look at pikachu ever again. last mainline game i played was SuMo and the last one i cared about was BW2. so, y'know, i'm here cuz i think the games are neat. reborn was my introduction to fangames and it's also just, like, really good*? ...but you see that there's an asterisk there. i usually condition that statement with "yeah, early game's kinda rough but once you get through that it gets a lot better." every once in a while some asshole would show up and bitch about it. sometimes they'd bitch on the forums and sometimes they'd bitch in a cracked article, but the problem with randos bitching about shit is that there's no reason to listen to them. if they're lucky, they're coherent. i've yet to meet a rageaholic rando that made a good point. if you don't understand what you're talking about, how can you? which is why it's nice to have me around! i am scathing. like early game is "fine", right? but why would anyone settle for fine. early game is fucking bland. when you're not beating up nonthreatening randos, you're running errands to fetch shit. and that shit is usually the plot. if this game included the pokewatch, your step counter would be through the roof. every single person who has ever played this game is tired as fuck of running through jasper. on top of that, there's a general lack of context for most of what's happening. there's often a reason for things, but those reasons are often arbitrary. if it wasn't for the fact that team meteor was there to duct tape the plot together, all early game would be is a series of "hey, there's a gym over here and you gotta fight it. also some batshit stuff might happen. have a good day." which, like, if this is your first fangame excursion, that's probably fine! "hey, there's a gym over here and you gotta fight it" is basically the sole drive behind early gen canon games. there's, at best, a paper thin plot sitting on top of that. early game reborn is far more compelling than that! but do you know what's way better than early game reborn? late game reborn. late game reborn kicks early game's ass. you can clearly tell that the quality of development dramatically improved over the course of the game, and that's mostly because ame's gotten better at this whole game dev thing. i'd been hammering her about doing anything to fix up early game for a while, if for no reason other than to bring it up to par with the bar set by the rest of the game. and, like, i really had to hammer. finally after a lot of pushing, she figured out a few things that she'd really like to change. and she did them! and then the rest of the changes just kind of rolled out from there. and, so, like i haven't quite finished the new early game yet. i'm just over three badges in. but yo this shit is fire it's not an overhaul of early game: the interior "dungeons" are redone and there's more character interactions, but most of it's still untouched. but honestly? that's really all it needed. it's amazing how a few small changes in just the right places make such a huge difference. for me, it's really been a lighting bolt reminder of everything i first loved about the game back when i was sitting on the other side of the dev blog. i'm not done with it yet, but if the rest is anything like how it's been so far, i'm super confident that it'll will be worth the wait. oh also there's the new shit too but who cares that's not this post

  25. Great question! Ace's name has roots in the old Team Meteor backchannel roleplays. Back when I first started the project I asked for Will to give me a handful of admin characters, and Ace was on that list but I actually dropped them because I was worried about, say, bloating the villain cast. I ended up regretting it pretty early on though because we just end up fighting taka and zel back and forth for a lot of the early game, lol... Anyway, their name and origin has roots there but the original ace was just kind of brooding and boring and edgy, and don't we have enough of that? So we took the opportunity to reinvent them into an entirely new character based on the name. Hi! You're welcome to dislike the the decision to add a new character, but please be sure to not misgender them. I understand accidents happen but you can show respect to non-binary people by adhering to characters' pronouns. The opposite comes off as very rude to our enby friends in the community. Your frustration is noted though, and while I have doubts as to whether or not anything I can say will belay you of it, it's not a concern I'm oblivious to (as the above history might suggest). Yet, when doing the updates I saw a lot of room for them. The early game content in current version is super light and thin; more interactions and characters to bounce off of can help things flow and set other elements up, and pushing unnecessary scenes off to the realm of being optional means it's in the player's hands just how much of the story's extra content they want to concern themselves with. The existing characters are spoken for, and I think it's worth considering that the flaws in the story are more structural as opposed to just "too many characters".

  27. I will admit I check this blog twice a day every day for treats like this. And it never disappoints me when a new post actually comes. I have to limit the hype I feel or I'll have sleep problems again, but if I could express all of it, the sheer energy would propably burn my entire house down. Other than my computer. I need to play this on something.

  30. We will be continuing to take bug reports in the forum! I watched Rejuv's release and didnt feel super optimistic about the spreadsheet myself. But new forum features will show duplicate thread titles to help reduce that, and we've got some folks who are handling the sifting for us. So far, it's been great. The "good old difficulty" really hasn't changed that much. If it feels easier, you've probably just gotten better as a player. But if you do want to push the envelope that much further there are a handful of passwords that can give enemies a numerical advantage. I've heard good things from testers about the "fullevs" password for this. We are not going to be enforcing the content to stay within the community, so you are allowed to stream it as you wish. But if a personal request makes any difference to you, I would rather you either make clear that it's still a beta version, or just wait until the public release (especially if you have a large audience). There will be a dedicated typo thread~ It is a distinct possibility, which is why we waited to finish postgame before releasing. I think if we were going to get shut down, now is the most likely time to do so. Still, I hope Nintendo can continue to show some good faith to fans and look the other way, especially now that their franchise is now more and more going in a different niche direction. I've been told by a lot of people that Reborn has helped get people back into the franchise, but everyone involved walks a very thin line here. The mode you're thinking of is probably the "easyhms" password. We do still use HMs as normal beyond that though. I do recommend that password in general. I hear some cool folks have already compiled such a thing from testing! If nothing else, you could always have a friend trade them between your save files Interesting idea. What do folks usually do on the celebration streams, just chat?? It's been a while since we've had a stream so it probably wouldn't hurt! One of the focuses of our testing time has been to implement enough QoL features that you don't necessarily have to to turn to debug in order to not suffer through grinding EVs and such, so I hope you'll give some of those new features a try before jumping straight there... But if you must use debug... You're accepting the responsibility that we don't find out about it. It is very possible to create gamebreaks and such with it so be responsible, keep it to yourself, and verify any reports you would post still happen on a non-debug copy. Although Rejuv's stuff was very fun, we don't have anything like that planned.... I just want to get the game out and functional and not perish. Trailers like that also just draw too much attention at this risky point. A new section will be visible to those with forum accounts where it will be posted~ I will probably try to hold onto them until the public release. If you're a modder who would need them to update your content or something though, I am willing to share. -- I missed the quote but to the person who asked if Mac is compatible with Online-- I believe it is now.

  31. it's really funny that you come in here trying to posture over an admin and dev, but get her gender wrong in the same breath. it really demonstrates the extent to which you've put in any effort to understand the people you're complaining about. could you maybe consider applying 5% of your power to good faith, positivity or better community interactions instead of cynicism and humblebragging about dragging down a comment section yet again? or is that too much for you?

  32. About Ace: I think it's really hard to say that adding a new character is a bad decision when we know nothing of them yet. As far as chances go, they could be a crown jewel. Personally, Reborn benefits from more nb representation. About character/writing quality: I am always confused when I see people complain about how the villains were written, or certain non-villain characters. Whether you think a character is well-written is an extremely subjective thing and depends on many factors, among others your media literacy. If you consume lots and lots of stories and video games, your expectations may be higher and you may be less surprised by solid characters simply because you have consumed so, so many similar ones. And obviously, if your standards are extremely carefully crafted stories like A Song of Ice and Fire, then most Pokemon games can only disappoint. If, however, you approach characters with a fresh mind, you may find them a firework of awesome. Personally, I never found the villains in Reborn to be bland, underwritten, or of poor quality. They are all drawn with a clear, defined stroke so that you can easily tell them apart and infer their motivations, attitude, thoughts, morals etc. when they aren't explicit. Taka comes to mind as a strong example (as far as I can tell, he is considered peak quality writing). Solaris may be a bit simpler, but seriously: I think that's the point. He is a bit Shakespearean in this respect: his strongest convictions are the fatal flaw that cause his downfall (at least in the Reshiram route, as far as we can tell). Streamlined, but not bad. ZEL/Zero? We haven't seen much of Zero without EL yet, but his breakdown isn't what I would call bad writing or bland. And Sirius? Right now, he may seem a bit one-dimensional... because we don't know much about him yet. We only see that he is cruel. But the game also hints at a deeper story here, so let's just see that unfold. As for non-villain characters: I think Terra exemplifies best how a character can leave drastically different impressions. Terra is both praised for being a terrifically-written character as well as extremely bad and obnoxious. So I guess it's normal that one character is perceived very differently by audiences. About there being too many characters: For a standard Pokémon game, maybe. Personally, I never felt Reborn had TOO many characters. It's many, but not too many right now. I always felt that because the characters are expressed so differently through their actions, way of speaking, appearance, and circumstances, it's easy to tell them apart and map their relationships in the mind. I feel Reborn does a much better job at this than Rejuvenation. Because I played both games back-to-back, I was surprised to find that Rejuv's writing was much harder for me to get my head around. I feel that this is due to a couple of factors: Reborn differentiates characters through dialogue. Characters like Radomus and Luna speak very formally and whimsically, Titania and Serra are to the point, Shelly is insecure and very polite, Hardy is laid-back and... British? Compared to Rejuv, my impression was that most characters sounded the same. I think this is especially apparent in Aya's dialogue, which feels notably different from her Reborn way of speaking. Rejuv characters also have a habit of including lengthy sentences without any real point, and I am glad Reborn has streamlined dialogue in many instances. (Don't get me wrong, parts of the story have this issue as well. But there is a world's difference in Reborn's dialogue compared to Rejuv, though I feel the latest releases have become much better at this.) Reborn also has a way of cartographing character relationships and antagonism. I feel it's easier to remember who is who because they have clear relations. You have three distinctly drawn rivals. Some of the gym leaders are related and complement each other. Others hate each others guts. I can't quite put my finger on what exactly it is that makes Reborn's characters easier for me to memorise, but with Rejuv, I always have to ask myself: "Who's this again? Did I meet this character before? Who were they friends with again?" It doesn't help that Rejuv throws in a lot more characters as well: 8 rivals instead of four, additional gym leaders, non-trainer characters, different versions of the same character, important historical people and their different versions, assistants and servants of all these people, people from the future... just compare the characters page of Reborn to that of Rejuv. O.o I also feel that in Reborn, each character has a role in the story. They aren't there just because the writer felt like including them, they have a purpose. (Some more than others, granted.) With Rejuv, I feel you could simply cut a significant amount of characters or turn two or more into one composite character. About the story being bloated: I don't think it is bloated yet. From the beginning to the end, the common thread throughout the game remains clear: push back Team Meteor and help Reborn become a better place. That's how the game starts and you never deviate from that goal too much. Sure, the Railway-Blacksteam-Azurine-Apophyll-Byxbysion-bit is very long and often cited as a prime example of pacing issues, but it's also not the worst there is. I like to compare segments like these to Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 days: sure, the gameplay is tedious and it feels like a chore, but that's exactly the point. If it felt like fun, it would clash with Roxas's story as a work slave for Organisation XIII. You would never feel his longing for freedom or his desire to protect his friendship with Axel and Xion if the gameplay hadn't made you feel this. So some parts of this Reborn segment should feel like your problems never end. Acquired one thing? Well, there's another problem. And another. And another. Some parts of this should be preserved, in my opinion, precisely because they frustrate the player - coming out victorious feels much more of an achievement when you went through all that crap. And then, there is simply the matter of taste. Reborn's story is rather long, and some people dig that, while other people prefer a more streamlined, shorter story. Those player types would probably also find typical RPG stories like FFVII or KotOR II: TLS bloated because they are so long and have lots of sidequests, details, and lore. They're simply not for everyone. On faith: I, too, think that at this point, having faith in the developers making good decisions is appropriate. After all, we have over 100 hours of well-crafted story and gameplay as of right now, so they are obviously doing something right. But I can also understand why people are anxious. E19 is going to be the most anticipated episode yet, and people probably have had bad experiences with hype, high expectations, and end results. At some point, your hype is so high and your headcanon so detailed that the final product has a really hard time of delivering that. Some games fail because they have been hyped to death and it was simply impossible for the game to comply with expectations. So for some people, their method of protecting themselves from unanticipated disappointment may be to assume an overly critical perspective so that the result has to be guaranteed disappointment. Miscellaneous: ...This is a free game. I'd understand the complaints in this section if you had to buy the game in stores, but seriously. As far as fangames go, Reborn is gold. AND FREE. What's to complain? (I totally get and encourage constructive criticism, but some of it isn't really relative to the effort people put into this game FOR FREE.) In short: I love this game. Were it up to me, you wouldn't have had to change a thing (I even love the game's flaws). It's gonna be great. I can't wait.
