When faced with the popular opinion... it's harder to disagree than agree. It's even harder to say why you disagree. But without those who dare to speak of their disagreement, the Catholic Church would never have reformed, many dictatorial regimes would never have fallen in favor of democracy, and many more would die in the grueling Vietnam War.
I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it. ~ Evelyn Beatrice HallI sincerely hope that our community will be able to tolerate oppositions and challenges to their individual stances, rather than shutting them down with names. It's better to explain than silence.
And now, I ask you, a curious passerby who decided to read this message, a question from months ago. "Is it okay to punch a Nazi?"

Well, when we're not speaking about actual violence it gets a bit more twisted. But in general I don't believe anyone has a right to tell someone else their opinion is wrong. Trying to silence people also tends to make them speak up. Unless you use force, in which case we're back to violence
There's also Mcarthyism (probs misspelled that >_<) being a thing. But that rant would take way to long
The best way to combat extremists is to listen to why they are extremists and provide a better option for those who might be drawn into their ranks. It's very similar to how gangs operate, just on a larger scale. Telling them to shut up just alienates and justifies them (from their perspective).

Oh, also, there's nothing wrong with calmly raising a logical argument against an opinion you dislike. It may not change the minds of those who hold that opinion but it can help sway those on the fence. This is in fact quite opposite from silencing them, as to make a good argument against them you first have to understand their position.
