My dad likes Rock and some genres of Metal, so as a kindergarten kid I really enjoyed the likes of Uriah Heep, Rammstein and the Scorpions. Lady In Black by Uriah Heep was my favourite song until my teens (and I still love it). I also remember the one or other Nightwish song, though I honestly don't know if it was my dad or my sister who was into that.
As a teenager I had a brief phase where I listened a lot to German Punk Rock, which I'll blame my sister for. Alarmsignal, Fahnenflucht, WIZO, Terrorgruppe, and of course also Die Toten Hosen. Eventually my preferences shifted a little more to Melodic Hardcore, like Strike Anywhere, Ignite, Pennywise, or the older Rise Against stuff. I got back into Metal again when I was around 14/15. I'd never stopped listening to the bands I liked as a child, but started finding more, and different bands and genres to enjoy. Equilibrium are one of the first bands that caught my interest, and eventually I got into Power Metal. Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, Blind Guardian, Helloween, Edguy, Keldian, those sorts of things. And then my first boyfriend got me into Death Metal and I discovered the joy that is Melodeath. Scar Symmetry is my favourite band by far. Soilwork. Disarmonia Mundi, Dark Tranquillity, Akrea, At The Gates, Arch Enemy... Good stuff. Very good. That said, of course I listen to other genres as well. Listing absolutely everything I like would take too darn long. But I guess if I gotta mention some others I enjoy, that'd include Celldweller, Pendulum, Enya, Madonna, Phil Collins, Two Steps From Hell, Axwell Λ Ingrosso, Nero...
For most things, I enjoy the music more superficially. The Metal scene is the only music-based subculture I am and have ever been part of. It's a good one, though! I like my annual share of festivals and concerts, it's a great way for me to meet other people without the intent of staying in contact.
