Famine exclaims to his group. This time, Death overhears him and makes his yells audible.

 

 

“You imbecile! What are you doing!? You're leaving yourselves open; they're barely even close!"

 

Famine clearly pretends not to hear Death. He lets out a loud, annoyed growl.

 

“Fucking damn it...! Fine! If you want to play your little game, we'll play too! Prepare to move forward, everyone! You too, Pestilence!"

 

As Famine's group moves in, the Scholar prepares a Wind spell, hurling it at Lysander-

 

“Time out! Time out! What's the point of using a Wind spell? They'll just heal it up anyway! Hold it and save your tome's power!"

 

Famine peers around the really confused Scholar, looking over at Lysander.

 

“Hey. Hey. That red guy over there; he called you Marvel, right? Are you perhaps related to the Marvel Thief in any way? Of course you are! Why else would you be called Marvel? But, I mean... You could be another Marvel, right? You know, like there could be another Virtuous out there!"

Lysander raised an eyebrow at Famine, visible even under his mask. He'd noticed this man's strange behaviour during the battle. "I am the Marvel Thief. The magical skill I have shown during this battle should be proof enough. And if you know of me and my feats." He summoned magic from his tome, wind surrounding him and lifting him slightly off the ground. He really hoped this would intimidate the man into giving in. "You know you don't stand a chance. Drop your weapons and let us through. I won't ask twice."

Famine looked absolutely awed when Lysander responded that he was the Marvel Thief, and looked very giddy with excitement that only grew even further when he summoned his magic, and didn't even seem remotely affected by the threat.

 

“So... so... COOL! You really are the Marvel Thief! There's no mistaking that skill with magic! That fierce determination! Hey, listen! Listen! I'm your biggest fan! I know, I know, biggest fans have a reputation for being completely clingy and obnoxious, but listen! I know a lot more information than you'd think!"

 

Out of absolutely nowhere, Famine begins singing in a dramatic falsetto.

 

"House Daxter, evil! House Daxter, so cruel! If they do not scare you, their poisoning will! They murder, cheat and call it... thrill! House Daxter... House Daxter... evil!"

 

A pause, but not too long; he doesn't give any room for anyone to continue talking.

 

“What'd ya think of my song? Pretty good, huh? Been working on it myself! I'm not the best at rhyming, but I think it's pretty good! Say, it'd be really cool if we battled one on one. Tell you what! I'll give you good odds; I won't attack anyone but the Marvel Thief and these guys will leave him alone too! Kinda can't stop them from attacking the rest of you, buuuut they'll leave me and the Marvel Thief alone! Also, I won't be mad if the Marvel Thief gets healed or gets performed by you guys! Ain't that nice odds? And..." Famine excitedly clutches his Nosferatu tome, lowering his voice so that only Lysander and the surrounding members can hear. "You win, and I answer any one question you have! Any question! Unless it's about our secret identities, then I kinda can't give that one away! Other than that, anything, whether it be about me, Pestilence, Death and or War! And I'll be 100% honest! Pinky promise!... And make sure Death doesn't hear about our deal, or he'll live up to his namesake! On me! Sound fair?"

Lysander was a little dumbfounded. He had fans? This one didn't seem like the smartest of them all, but he seemed dangerous either way. "Very well. I've never been one to shy away from a challenge."

Briefly, a little intrusive thought entered Lizaveta's mind -- an inexplicable thought that somewhere, someone was getting scammed by the merchant class.

 

But she was on a battlefield, so she didn't have time to let these thoughts consume her... especially since the situation they were in was a bizarre one indeed, worth her focusing her thoughts on it.

Hearing Famine so casually sing that song with such glee caused the butler's blood to boil, seething with a myriad of emotion. The lyrics in particular pieced his biggest nerve yet,  "SILENCE YOU CUR! How DARE you sing a song in reverence to those heathens! You think I'll just let you get away with that!?" With blazing fury he turned back to Kane,  "Phoenix, prevent his escape with your glue pack! I'm gonna get answers from him whether he wants to or not! His little game be damned!" Not even waiting for a response he rushes forward and begins his assault.

Shoving his way past the scholar in front of the dark mage, he grabs the collar of Famine's cloak lifting him up slightly,  "You keep this up and I don't know how long I'll be able to restrain myself from beating you unconscious."  Spitting blazing daggers towards either the incredibly brave or very foolish man in-front of him,  "Now you're going to tell me everything you know about house Daxter and their 'Poisoning' antics, and I might let you go scurry back to your friends as you are."

Famine still looked a bit giggly, but now a bit more worried as Baldur actually was going through with his threat.

 

"Haha, well, ya see, well, you kiiiiinda didn't go through with the deal, I mean, the Marvel Thief was meant to beat me and then I'd give you answers, right? The deal wasn't 'guy with fancy outfit and fancier mask' beats me then I'd give you answers, right? I mean, if we didn't have that kind of order, we would- Death, if Pestilence is gonna give you an extra opportunity, how about using it to help me, huh!?"

 

An annoyed groan surfaces as you all begin to look behind you, unable to see what happened. However, Lenore and Shin... as well as Mim got the full blast of what happened; Death crept up from behind without everyone noticing, grabbing Mim in a surprisingly crushing grip for someone of his height. The rest of you do not see as he dives back into the trees, only to resurface again, kicking Famine out of Baldur's grip, knocking Baldur to the ground and crushing his foot on Baldur's head and dominant arm to prevent him from moving.

 

Famine looked about ready to complain about how much that hurt; Death could tell without even looking, as he drew an arrow close to Mim's neck.

 

 

“If you didn't have an opportunity for me to take a second hostage, you'd be at this group's mercy for your fucking idiotic stunt. Now get out of here!"

 

Famine shrugs, waving goodbye to you all as he teleports in a puff of black smoke. Pestilence whimpers in a bush not too far from you.

 

"Wh... Why her, brother...? Why-"

 

“Do you need to know why!? Get out of my sight before they take you too! Do you want to slow me down!?"

 

Pestilence hesitates, but anyone so much as taking a small peek at her will make her run for her little life, the thought of becoming a hostage fills her with enough adrenaline. Kane heads to the front of the group, and Arthur pushes his way past, literally going in blazing.

 

"You fucking bastard, you worthless waste of skin, unhand her right now or I'll burn you to the fucking-"

 

Death's arrow gets ever so closer to Mim's neck.

 

 

“You'll burn me to the fucking what? I could have filled her with five arrows for every second of breath you wasted trying to threaten me. You've let anger consume you, but I know that I am vastly superior to you, 'Crimson'. Unless you'd like to try and take an arrow for the girl while it's inches from piercing her neck and filling her with my lethal poison? I'm sure you'll definitely give two shits about this idiot that'll just start crying as her entire vitals shut down."

 

Death grinds his shoe on Baldur's arm; though Baldur may try to get him off, Death is really strong for his size. Arthur looks to both Mim and Baldur, shakingly putting his tome away.

 

"Please... please, not again..."

 

Kane, in a better state of mind than Arthur, clearly, doesn't take a step forward to intimidate Death, but stays put.

 

"Name your terms that will let Orchid and Snowbird go, Death of the Icons of Sin."

 

 

“Very well. Famine may be an idiot, but he had somewhat of the right idea. Don't think I didn't hear his little stunt... he likes to think he's smarter than he actually is. But I'm much smarter than the rest of the Icons of Sin put together. I'm not interested in deals; you're going to answer every question I have. But first... drop all your fucking weapons right now! There will be no negotiations! Don't try anything funny, either! I'm much quicker on the draw than any of you lowlifes are."

 

Without hesitation, Kane's glue pack drops to the ground. Death continues to look at Kane, prompting him to drop his knife as well. After a little bit of hesitation, Arthur drops his tomes. Kane looks behind you all, slightly defeated but clearly trying to remain calm in the face of danger.

 

"As he says, Virtuous."

 

He briefly mouths trust me.

Lizaveta wasn't about to make the same mistake twice, having seen what had happened thanks in large part due to her actions just a while earlier -- especially when the stakes were so high, now. So she slowly kneeled downwards, putting her tomes onto the ground, Thunder, then Wind, and then finally Worm. It seemed like Kane had some sort of plan... but not knowing what that was, she would just let him put that into play how he wanted to. For now, she just glared daggers into Death, staring intently... memorizing his face.

 

If the worst did come to pass, as much as Lizaveta hoped that it wouldn't, and as much as she was standing back to make sure it didn't... well, revenge was an awfully palatable concept, these days.

It happened in an instant. If she was given the chance to replay it all in her head later, she would kick herself for letting him get that close, even though she knew she probably wouldn't have been able to stop him even if she had noticed him. Still, it was stupid on her part. But she couldn't focus on that just yet. She needed to do something even stupider first.

 

Right now he was in control. But if she could disrupt that, even for a second... Maybe she could let the group escape from this. Let Crimson get out of this. And if she got hurt along the way, well... She looked over at Fey and gave a small sad smile. And then focused again on the man threatening her life.

 

 

"I would give you crap for picking on the smallest one in the group but I guess with your size you don't really have any other options, huh? You couldn't really hug anyone else like this without having your bow be completely useless. Still, hope this makes you feel better. Picking on the little girl..."

 

She shot a quick grin to Pestilence, waving with her free hand. Though, as she put the arm down after the wave, she casually ended with her fingers wrapped around on of the arrows resting in their quiver at her hip. It was on the far side from Death... Hopefully he wouldn't notice.

 

"Go on now. It'll be ok, I know you can't go against him just yet. He's too scary to you. My group won't hurt you though. I promise. And we'll see you again in better circumstances hopefully. But your bro has to prove he's the smartest for now, so just leave before things get ugly, alright?"

 

The arrow was out of the sheath, resting quietly at her side now. If he hadn't noticed yet, it was now or never...

Lenore remains....surprisingly calm. At least on the surface.

This wasn't the first heist gone wrong she'd seen. But then, it wasn't a heist, most of her accomplices weren't professional thieves, and her marks weren't murderous assassins with a grudge against her and everyone she worked with. Lenore could work with it.

Plans, plans, plans. Kane had something up his sleeve. Scarlet was keeping her mouth shut. Good. Lenore wasn't going to lecture her; she'd learned enough. She could tell exactly what Mim was doing; after all, Lenore had done it herself far, far too many times to count. Misdirection was Lenore's forte, her element.  She couldn't see what Mim was going for, but she wasn't about to spoil that plan.  Death, however, if he WAS going to kill Mim, he'd have done it already. No, he wanted something. Even if he was saying no negotiations, taking a hostage meant he wanted leverage, something he didn't have.

Too many elements, too much risk and too many unknowns; Death was unstable, not someone Lenore was willing to cross without some sort of backup plan and she didn't know what Kane had up his sleeve, and anything she did was going to interfere or possibly make it worse. NOT Lenore's favourite set of circumstances. But then again, Lenore Snicket wasn't a thief for nothing, and it wasn't because she was an amateur that nobody knew her name or who she was. She was the opposite of Marvel, a thief who's name wasn't known because she made every single attempt to make sure the only evidence of her theft was the missing object itself and dust in the wind.

It was a game of waiting for everyone to show their hands first, ultimately, and right now, anything she did would jeopardise that. So, the best course was to do nothing at all.

She stays cool, calm, eyes intently staring at Death, waiting for a weak point to strike at.

With his dominant arm he raises his staff in front of Famine’s face.  "My magic can do more than just heal wounds and can cause much more pain than any blade. If you want to find out yourself-“  before he could continue the butler would soon find a boot to his and dirt in his mouth. Within a moment he found himself pinned to the ground his arm trapped beneath the heel of Death. Even through all the grinding he still managed to keep grip on his staff. This small man maybe strong but Baldur is equally as resilient.

 

Gritting his teeth, the dirt in his mouth grinding against his white teeth.  "Damn you!”  he spat venomously,  "Errrrr.... Everyone only focus on getting Snowbird out. If only one of us can be rescued let it be her!”  As he said those word he shimmied the shiv he has tucked up his free hand’s sleeve preparing to strike if Death tries anything funny. It’s moments like these where Baldur was thankful he kept that habit up. He also tighten his grip on his staff, ready to use his magic to shove the scoundrel’s hand to hopefully make him miss a fatal shot at the archer. However, from his position he was able to get a glance at Mim getting an arrow from her quiver out.  "So, this bird does have claws. Fine I’ll follow her lead if this is what she wants."

"Guy who decides to take hostages calls us lowlifes. Sure, whatever," Fey shrugs, not amused with the situation. "And besides, most of us were probably willing to answer some questions before and you weren't too keen on the idea. Any particular reason you want us to answer them now?"

"No one needs to get hurt." Lysander said, calming the magic that surrounded him until he stopped levitating and landed softly on the ground. He unbuckled his tomes from his belt letting them drop to the floor. He then raised both his hands to prove he was unarmed, but one eye kept on the blizzard tome. If it was absolutely necessary it would be his best bet he reckoned.

"Curious, the words of one who's allowed himself to fall so low." Justine stepped backward, pulling Joyeuse and its sheath from her belt in the same smooth motion. "What tragedy has to befall a person to prompt them to take up sin itself as a cause?" She planted the weapon in the ground next to her, the metal tip of the scabbard digging into the dirt just enough to keep the light weapon in place. The ostentatious display was mostly to hide the fact that her body was coiled like a spring, ready to follow through on whatever it was Kane was planning.

Shin's eye's widen, his gaze focused. He steps off his horse and discards his bows onto the ground. He slowly approaches the hostage taker.


"H-HEY, WAIT!" he shouts. "I HAVE DROPPED MY WEAPONS, BUT I HAVE SOMETHING ELSE TO SAY." 
The boy continues walking closer, proceeding to remove even his armor as he does so, stopping at the edge of the lake.


"I... I offer myself up in return for the lives of those two.." He pauses, and takes a deep breath. "Release those two, and take ME INSTEAD."

Death honestly looked... really bored with everyone talking. He rolled his eyes at pretty much what everyone said, clearly wondering to himself if anyone was even bothering to pay attention to the fact that he had hostages rather than running their mouths.

 

Pestilence, unfortunately, didn't hear much of Mim's speech, trying to run for her life, but she did seem to stop for a brief moment. It was clear that she at least heard up to 'meeting in better circumstances' before running off. Death didn't care much about this.

 

 

“Little girl, if you're trying to mock me and get me to lose my focus, it's not working. Your petty insults hold no water when you're right up against death's door. You and I both know that I am the superior. And you all... does it look like I give a damn about what any of you think? If you want to escape with your lives, I'll be making the demands. I would like to leave knowing-"

 

Shin's outburst interrupts Death, who sharply turns his gaze to the interrupting voice, still keeping a harsh grip on Mim and still keeping an eye on her; not quite the opportunity to stab just yet. However...

 

 

“Cute. Because one, not even considering how less you are than the dirt beneath my heel..." Death grinds his boot on Baldur's wrist for emphasis. "...is better than two, clearly. I'm not interested in you, I seek knowledge. The identities of all of you in Virtuous. That's my demand; take it or leave behind your friends."

 

Kane, who has been dead silent the whole time, looks to Shin.

 

"Ficus, please. Just give it a moment..." It looks like Kane is really holding out for something, as he considers Death's proposal. "You seek our identities, then?"

 

 

“Yes. What's it going to be? Hurry it up, already."

[Shauntaro]

Silence ensues. That option was a no-go, as expected. Who would find any value in a nobody like him? No past, no wealth, nothing. Sweat starts to pile up on his forehead, he glares daggers at Death before firmly stating.


Ignoring Kane, he says: "I-I get it, I understand. I know there's not enough value for me to bargain for the lives of those two."


"THEN I OFFER THIS, IF YOU DON'T WANT ME. I'LL SACRIFICE MYSELF." Shin shouts and he picks up and a stray arrow from the ground and lifts it up to his neck. I'LL END MY LIFE HERE, FOR YOU, FOR YOU TO LET THE REST LEAVE ALIVE!"

-Before anyone could respond, as if unwilling to give anyone a choice, Shin let's out a guttural scream

"AAAAAAAAAAAAARGGHHHHH"


-before jamming the arrow straight into his own neck. 



"....."
Shin's expression unwavering, his body starts to grow weak as blood flows from his throat, his last sights set on Baldur and Mim before it grows blurry. And he falls into the lake.

Death just watches silently, as if someone watching a play might enjoy the show, but mostly just be there for the food. However, Shin's sudden shouting was enough to get him to really pay attention, this time with keen interest. Kane looked as if he really was trying to keep his focus, but Shin really made him lose his cool. Kane jumped after Shin...

 

"FICUS! NO!"

 

...but it was too late, as his scream echoed throughout the forest and he plunged into the lake. Kane grits his teeth.

 

"Rgh...! Golden Eye, you have seafaring experience, correct? I need you to retrieve Ficus, now! Look, Death-"

 

Before Kane can continue further, Death does something so strange, something you can hardly imagine him doing. This stern-faced, completely and constantly angered individual...

 

Bursts into laughter.

 

 

“Hahaha-ahahahaha! HAH! What a fucking idiot! The fucking moron thought his sacrifice was going to deter me for even a moment! Hey, you fucking dumbass!" Death mockingly yells at the lake, completely distracted, still laughing. “Do you not know who I am? I am Death of the Icons of Sin! I have murdered King Tobias of Ceda, or have you forgotten? And guess what, I'm sure your pathetic little brain doesn't know what Vini is, but guess what? I've murdered King Cyrus of Vini as well! Did you actually think- good Lion this is the fucking most hilarious thing I've ever seen in my life- did you actually think your pathetic sacrifice would be enough of a sob story to get me to relent and not do the fucking thing I'm an expert at doing? Well, then! Go rot at the bottom of the lake, you worthless pile of trash! Die knowing that your death absolutely succeeded in doing. Fucking. Nothing!"

 

Death looks like he almost wants to stop laughing, but he can't.

 

Even with his death grip on Mim and Baldur, he is completely, utterly unable to stop laughing.

At first Baldur was completely annoyed at what Shin was trying to pull. What did he think he was going to accomplish? Then... but then...  "That fucking idiot! Dammit!" The butler began to flail hopelessly as he tried to free himself from Death's heel. All he could think about was trying to save Shin before he bled out.  "eeeeerrrrrRRRRRR! Get off! GET OFF! GET OFF!!! GET OOOOOOOOOOOOOOFF!!!" The butler couldn't hold back anymore, firmly grasping his staff he channels his magic focusing it on Death's bow arm. He then shoves it down and away from Mim's body before yelling,  "Snowbird! FUCKING DO IT!"
