  1. Oh hey that one was my idea! I learned programming in ruby from scratch for it and it eventually got me into the team. Always cool to see people like it as much as I do. Now what was I thinking when I came up with the idea, that's a good question. I was unemployed during that period of time and my sleep schedule was drifting around the clock, and I always come up with strange ideas around 4-5 AM. But doing some digging in my post history around that time, I think I had replayed Undertale shortly before that, so that game was probably in a corner of my mind. I've always loved how that game reacts to things you do inside the game, it's got a comment for everything, it's great. I really love when games acknowledge not just your choices in the narrative, but how you play them, how you solve the problems they present to you, and I think games like Pokémon are perfect for this because you have so much room to express yourself with how you build your team, how you choose to play the battles, So I pitched the idea out loud and Caz was like "ayo this would be great but i have no idea how to implement that" (Caz isn't a programer), and. I had spent three years doing programming in school, so I was like, no, no, I'm 85% sure I could make it work if I really tried. So the next day i bought RMXP and started learning essentials and ruby from scratch to figure out how to make it work. And. Yeah it turns out that it pretty doable. I hope we find some time to expand it this episode, I think there's more to do with the feature than we did in e6, but it can be kinda hard to find the time and space for it.
  2. I'm trying to pretend mods don't exist long enough that rejuv 13.5 comes out and the modding scene from rejuvjust does it Okay serious talk, the script overhaul from e5 to e6 is so big basically all of them have to be redone and i'm pretty sure the jump from reborn e19 release to e6 release also makes them unusable too. But also... a lot of them have just been integrated in the game already as QoL or passwords and I'm not even sure if there's a list of mods that should be remade to begin with ? Anyway, it's a time commitment i'm not sure I can make and don't feel like making right now. There's stuff I really need to get around to do on the dev side of Deso, so mods just aren't in my list of priorities right now. I have no idea how close we are to Rejuv v13.5 but i wouldn't be surprised if when that releases mods get done for that and you should more or less be able to just port those onto deso e6.
  3. I think you're looking at the ability a bit too much in how good it would be for a showdown match as opposed to how it is in single player rpg with set obstacles and challenges. The matter of the fact is that even with the reduced duration, even with the tag-out punishment, and even despite being on a pretty underwhelming mon, Dark Surge makes mega mightyena so absurdly good against Reeve and other big story battles from e6, which is currently the main thing you could use it on anyway, that we already considered not doing it at all to begin with/pushing mightyenite further back sorely so we wouldn't have a Flygon 2 situation. It's ultimately Posty's call to make more than mine, but I don't see it getting buffed, imma be real.
  4. Hi I tried investigating that bug but when I tried the savefile you provided I was able to enter weeping hill with no issue. Anything you changed in the settings I should know about ? If not, then I guess i'd just recommend re-downloading the game fresh and trying to load it from there.
  5. Hi! We fixed the substitute bug, but we're having trouble reproducing the magic bounce one. Anything you recall about that fight that could have interacted with that ?
  6. On the matter of missable quests, I'll add that I plan on reworking the quest system for next episode to account for a few things I missed with the initial implementation, and I may very well make it so a quest has a little icon to tell you it's missable in the log or something, a la xenoblade chronicles 1. Dont expect it in a patch for this episode cause it's gonna be a long term project, but that is in the plans for e7.
  7. Oh hey that one's for me Well posty is the main field designer but Im responsible for crowd and darkness turning out that way soooooo The short answer is that no, it is largely coincidental those fields were written more defensively. I don't think this will be a trend moving forward. The long answer is : -as a general rule of thumb I don't really think much about balance when coming up with ideas for a field - I don't think I have a good grasp on it as I dont play much pokemon outside of fangames, so I treat every thing I suggest as "throw it at the wall and see if posty can make something balanced out of it". My main angle of thought is as a scripter - what's possible and what isn't - , and flavor : how can I integrate the aesthetic and lore of a field into the battle? Darkness field is more or less my baby, since e5 darkness was just reborn dark crystal cave without the crystal cave transition, which. Wasn't the most creative thing. It actually crystallized kinda late in development because none of us were sure what we wanted to do with the field. So I asked Caz a bunch of questions about what darkness was supposed to be in Deso - what place did it occupy in the lore, what tropes were we pulling from, what theme were we going for, and how did it relate to other things in the game like the dreamscape, the grid, the real world. A lot of the answers I got that day, that haven't been given yet by the story, influenced what I came up with for darkness field - including the stage gimmick and the focus on being defensive. I'll let Caz decide how much he wanna elaborates on, but I'll say that I was at first split between making a really oppressive field that would be very unpleasant to stay on and maybe put everything on a timer, a la corrosive mist, or the complete opposite - and I went with the latter after I got my answers. It was also a convenient proposition for Posty, who has long been saddened that scolipede could just one-shot umbreon on that field with massive ease because of the quad weakness to bug, so making the field so defense oriented solved that. Crowd field was a lot more of a spur in the moment thing. Posty had come up with the cheer mechanic and wanted to come up with something else but couldn't decide what, and halfway through coding the field I went "hey wouldn't it be cool for the crowd to root for the underdog and boost them nobody likes a boring curbstomp right" and I already had the code to build upon with the npc commentary thing. The idea proved pretty popular among the team so we went with it. It also conveniently helped a lot for the battle because garret would normally be quite open to sweeping and we kinda regretted that, but again - that's mostly a happy accident on my part.
  8. This one is probably more of a Caz question because it's up to him to decide how much he wanna say, but there's at least some info already in the game i can already restate So there's four gym leaders left to fight. Among the four, there's gotta be Ava in there, given she's one, and, well. You can probably take a good guess at her type specialty. There's also Vera, the Dragon Gym Leader, who got mentionned by Aderyn early on during her part of the story, so that's another one covered. I don't think much has been revealed on the last two tho so that gets into caz territory.
  9. ... Why would you want the common headbutt and wildencounter ones ? Deso has no headbutt trees and the magnetic lure, which does everything the wild enconter rates mod does, is given right at the start of the game for free. Why would you want the same thing on a smoke ball that's available much later ? Debug is no, not because debug is inherentely bad or whatever, but because we don't want to deal with even more bug reports of people who used debug to reach impossible states. People have historically been bad at mentionning they had debug when posting saves that got stuck because of it, and making debug even more accessible than it already is would be more of that. There's like, a million simple ways to enable debug in those games without us making it an official thing.
  10. Hi ! an E6 version of this is eventually the plan, yes, but it's not gonna happen too soon - I need to go back over the e5 part and adjust everything that changed with e6 on top of the e6 part, and I don't have the free time I had when I made this guide, so it might take a while to get there. I know fellow user Dred has mentionned a couple times on Discord they plan on doing a guide for E6 so they might just end up beating me to it.
  11. Its the small transition tunnel between silver forest and addfall woods, if memory serves.
  12. Aight, so I checked with Caz and I stand corrected : leafeon is bugged and can't be obtained, but glaceon is specifically the frozen tunnel rather than silver forest.
  13. level them up Addenfall grove and silver forest respectively, if I remember correctly.
  14. cubone's a 2% encounter chance IIRC so it's alas not unrealistic to see shinies before it if RNGesus feels like giving you a bad day. There doesn't seem to be any better access to cubone later on, so you're out of luck. Depending of how you feel about it, your best bet might be to simply use the mod from Reborn that forces available pokemons you haven't caught yet to spawn in wild battles, and omit the line where it requires your lead mon to hold a smoke ball to work.
  15. 1-) There's a name rater in Blackview city. On the map i've included in the guide, he's in a house somewhere in the middle of A1 2-) You can return to part of the Keneph cave already, there's no encounter tables you're ever locked out of currently. The only thing that's missable in the keneph cave is the tm20 cave. You're welcome ! Always a pleasure to know this guide is useful to people.
  16. You might have mixed it up with rejuvenation, I think it's current level cap at 0 badge is 17. I don't think I have much advice to offer for that guy. I see you've already picked rockruff and rockruff should naturally resist tail slap so that's already a better boon than me trying to win this with venipede. But really, there's not many ways around this - train a couple mons you caught in the wild up to a level where they can contribute to the fight by capitalizing on Connor's presence to get healed between fights and you should be set until the kuiki fight, after which you get access to a town and enough stuff to get you really started.
  17. I'm unsure what you're thinking of, but there is no actual way to overgrind in Deso - It uses a hard level cap system, so unless you actually use rare candies or the daycare, you can't run into truancy problems. And for that matter, the cap before getting the first badge IS level 20. I'm kinda curious why you thought it was 17. I actually do agree that the Shiv Aipom could use a nerf, if nothing else because tail slap this early in the game isn't very conductive of any playstyle besides grinding until it stops being a problem, though.
  18. Yeah, tbh I'm kinda curious where the story plans on going from there, because E5 could be a second-to-last episode and I'd shrug and say "yeah that feels pretty appropriate to me", so I dunno what caz has in store for the half of the game we still have to go through but it's probably gonna take us for a ride again. And you're welcome, Deso lives rent free in my head so it's always nice to let it out somewhere and talk about it.
  19. Ehhh, not really ? I feel like picking apart the various question would just be more confusing than needed, so I'll give what I assume to be the plotline of the twins and nova. 1) Shiv and Aurora are two normal persons living a mostly normal life to the exception their parents seem absent from their lives. 2) Both of them starts discovering they have superpowers. Aurora initially hates the fact they make her an abnormality and wants get rid of them, while Shiv decides to essentially have fun with them. Becoming the champion, fuck around with the inhabitants of Addenfall, that kind of thing. 3) Aurora tries to present her findings about her powers to a scientific comitee, gets laughed out of it, murders them and decides that actually having superpowers rules. Meanwhile, Shiv catches a depression for not knowing what to do with his life, since, and it turns out having superpowers doesn't actually answers that question in life. 4) Aurora decides to pick up pokemon battling and beat shiv at it to give him something to improve over, doesn't work. Shiv decides that fucking with the people of Addenfall town and have them unearth the Onyx stone and try to exploit it's power is a logical course of action. He may or may not have outright brainwashed keegan/kuiki during this period. 5) Shiv's depression gets worse as it turns out the Onyx stone really is a piece of useless rock. Enter Nova, who at the time is already a pawn of Darkrai(nothing about nova is elaborated prior to that point). She's got a weaker version of the twins's powers but makes up for it by being able to vampirize the twins for more power. Nova ends up getting along well enough with Shiv she actually gets him out of his depression. 6) Nova tries to steal Aurora's powers and stabs Shiv. Shiv seemingly survive because A)powers I guess ? B) unrealistic representation of lethality of injuries in fiction. 7) Sometimes after that the twins become pawns of Dakrai too, unclear when it happened or how. 8) Shiv and Nova, working as pawns of Darkrai, set up this little conflict about Ideal VS reality to bait the player. while initially entirely an act, the longer the twins spend away from the dreamscape, the more they readapt to reality being actually real, the more they actually geniunely invest themselves in it - not unlike even the most vivid dream fades out over the course of the day if you don't go out of your way to remember it. Aurora is doing her own thing but still a pawn of Darkrai. Maybe she was also supposed to bait the player at first with an act of "going after Nova for revenge" and ended up getting too invested in it since she does geniunely hate Nova for that night. 9) By the time the showdown at cellia central happens, pretty much everyone is fully invested in this supposedly manufactured conflict. -Aurora wants to Kill Nova because A)she hurt her brother and she has Yandere tendencies toward Shiv as her dialogue with the player before batling indicates and B) she stole part of Aurora's power, and Aurora has developed control freak tendencies that do not vibe with this. -Nova just wants to not fucking die -Shiv doesn't exactly like Nova either but still deeply cares about her, because, she may have only entered her life to stab him and steal his powers, she geniunely helped him out of depression, which is something he's grateful for. Also he's clearly alive and kicking so it's not like the knife stab left him scarred for life. Plus it's not like the powers did much for him anyway, so he doesn't seem to majorly resent whatever Nova took from him. Depending of how you do things during cellia, Aurora can geniunely come to empathize with Shiv's POV, which shakes her further from Darkrai's influence. 10) Right as everyone could almost go back to being regular people, Aurora is sent back to the Dreamscape where Darkrai's influence grows again and reality starts feeling like the dream again, Nova goes missing, presumably becuase Darkrai tries to kill her, while shiv goes looking for Nova by going after Team Crescent's leadership. 11)Shiv eventually rejoins the dream because of you during the events of bountilia Island. 12)Both twins, once again mostly under Darkrai's control, try to lure you into siding with him. 13)Should you refuse, Darkrai tries to get rid of you too but Nova, who has apparently managed to sever ties from Darkrai's influence entirely saves your ass. 14)which brings us to the end of the current build, with Nova free from Darkrai, Shiv still having lingering doubts because of his connection with Nova, while Aurora seems more under Darkrai's control. The nature of the Twins's superpowers are quite unclear, but from what we can gather, they're small-scale reality warpers - they can teleport, turn inanimate matter into pokemons, make them grow at an unnatural speed, open portals to the grid without the need for machines. The game initially explains it as "the twins are actually normal people lucid dreaming and bending the fake reality to their whim", but that explanation is shown to be wrong by the fact A) Aurora still has her powers in the Dreamscape, and B) that the dreamscape is the actual dream, after all. A better explanation would be the one given by darkrai to the player towards the end - the player, as well as the twins and Nova, are conduits of energy who can freely enter and exit the dream world. I suppose this also means you can use that ability to do most of the powers they're shown to use over the course of the story if you're creative enough about it. The twins aren't actually the most super special people out there, as the honor apparently goes to the player.
  20. An engagement ring. It's prolly not the actual answer, but that's what I think of when you put it like this. edit : Ah damn someone made the joke before me.
  21. Preeeeeeeeetty sure holding the mega stone to learn them would be an extra pain in the ass that wouldn't even be worth implementing (what's stopping you from removing the mega stone after that ?) and it will simply be, always be in the learnset. I could be wrong, but I think that's how Cinccino operates as does currently.
  22. I think we ran into that problem in the past. I'm not certain what the answer was, I'll check with Caz and update the post when I get confirmation, but IIRC, mightyena's meant to be able to use those moves but currently doesn't in E5, and it'll be fixed in the next release. Will probably update the wiki while we're at it. edit : yup, can confirm that's the thing - those two moves accidentally were removed for E5, they'll be back in E6.
  23. Do I, really ? Because when I picked up Deso a bit less than a year ago, Information on the game was extremely scarce online. No guide, no wiki, and when you had a question about a puzzle, better hope either this forum had it, or pray a random youtube video had it, and said videos were pretty scarce considering some of the top results were like, Episode 3 stuff. That's the kind of thing that should be more readily available if the game was that popular, seieng how reborn, rejuv and insurgence have far more material. Yeah, Deso now has a full guide and a wiki that's well underway, but I had to make the former myself and even with our best efforts, the wiki's still not quite complete yet either. Youtube also got a bit more populated with videos of the game, but that kinda speaks of how little material there was before Episode 5. More minor things, but Deso's about one of the only fangames I've picked up on my own rather than see people talk about it. Contrast with how I saw plenty of people talk about Reborn, Rejuv, Insurgence or even Empyrean before I picked them up. It may also simply due to that particular website being past it's prime, but Deso also had no Tvtropes page when the four mentionned above did. Well, it has one now, because me and a couple of other people made it. Pretty much everywhere I go that might be remotely knowledgeable on pokemon fangames, I'm one of the only, if not the only Desolation fan in the room. That's not something I've seen happen with the other fangames. Make no mistake, I love Deso, or I wouldn't have put in a tenth of the time I've sunk into not just the game but everything else related to it, but it's just not a name you stumble on quite as quick when you enter the world of pokemon fangames. Hell, the only reason I even caught wind of that game is because Cass talked a bit about it in some dev posts. That being said, I kinda got sidetracked there, I didn't meant to turn that into a popularity contest, that's my bad. I meant to add to my original post, that I'm glad Vhein is enjoying the game so much, cause I really agree Deso manages to nail something on the story side other fangames usually struggle with. I hope it inspires more people in turn.
  24. Why would insurgence be there ? Like, I understand lumping reborn, rejuv and desolation together because same hosting site and same overall design philosophy. But if we're talking about popularity/famousness, I can get putting reborn and insurgence together, but Deso has quite some time before it gets to that level of popularity.
