Personally, I feel we've shown an inability to discuss a serious matter in a mature manner without any type of altercation occuring. If I may suggest, I'd henceforth propose such threads stay in the ace-only area, if any, in an attempt to minimize the aggravation. Or ideally, the creation of a debate subforum with it's own rules so that this can be better managed.

What you're arguing is ideology. Jericho "didn't determine that", life did. it's how it works. You can kick and shout all you want, at the end of the day, those are the rules of the game. You can either accept it, or try to change them, but you can't not play; Someone will drag you into it and make you. (Not referring to drafts, but the part about dictatorship. My point is that no one here WANTS the strong to bully the weak, we just don't romantize an ideal world where they wouldn't because they always will; So arguing "why" they do it is pointless opposed to arguing how to stop it).

You've been given the rights and duties by birth, yes, but again, you're free to reject your citizenship so that the laws of your country no longer apply to you, as long as you're fine with no longer being afforded the rights as a citizen.

Saying civillian soldiers can't win wars is disregarding all historical evidence to the contrary, including the one Pyon mentioned above. If the tactic never worked, it would not be employed. And yes, it's a desperate measure. That's why it's a last resort. At that point, the war is lost, but most people will choose to go down fighting. That said, I'm curious. how are drafts the government not serving the people? The drafts occur because they're in the law. The law was created by officials of the government The people elected the officials based on the democratic system The democratic system was chosen by the people as the tool to be employed to govern their nation The draft law exists because the people chose someone who created it. At the end of the day even the drafts are still the government upholding it's part of the bargain and following the laws that the people themselves collaborated in their creation. It wasn't through some grand machination of an evil entity but through the democratic process itself. The people chose this law, and they have to follow it. Even if it wasn't a direct decision by the people, it's a consequence of the administrative system the people chose.

First of all firefighters don't just put out fires, they also rescue people. You've just said you'd be willing to rescue others, so that's already a point in favor of Mael's point; Given the event of a crisis, most people would want to help in some fashion. As for whether or not your ideal lacks compromise, it feels like you're ignoring the context. Drafts are the last case scenario, not the first. When it comes time to draft people in it most likely means the war has been going on for a couple of years and your country has been losing and a scenario where you're forced to surrender and be anexed to another - potentially tyrannical - leader is nigh. At such a point, it's no longer a matter of "do you want to go to war" insomuch as "do you want to risk the consequences of not doing so?" in this hipothetical scenario, not going to war means giving up the battle, losing, and probably having to suffer occupation and the woes that come with it. It can also mean dying in an attack or losing a loved one in a similar fashion. Saying that "either you join or you flee" isn't fair disregards the context in which the situation would occur. At such a point, your options become: A) Fight B) Being conquered/pillaged by the enemy C) Flee Also, the freedom you refer to is hipocritical in nature. Yes, the constitutional freedom you refer to only applies as long as you serve the entity that enforces it - Simple example; Break the law and you go to jail. Inconstitutional freedom doesn't exist. It's a government in some sort that guarantees your freedom because it is an entity large and strong enough to uphold it and retaliate if someone tries to take that freedom from you. Take away the government, the protection of the constitution and it's ability to enforce it, and your freedom belongs to whoever is strong enough to keep it - Be it you or anyone else. So, yes, this freedom comes with a cost. The government gives you freedom and all your rights as estabilished constitutionally, but in return you have to serve your country should the need arise it - That's what citizenship is. The meaning of "citizenship" is "being vested with the rights, priviledges and duties of a citizen" "citizen", in turn, meaning "natural or naturalized member of a state or nation who owes allegiance to it's government and is entitled to it's protection" What you describe, instead, is wanting to have all duties and priviledges of being a citizen without having to perform your duties. It's the same thing as saying you want to buy something without actually paying for it. Citizenship is a transaction between person and country, and you are free to give up your citizenship if you disagree with the terms of the deal. The reason why it's fair that you would have to give up home and family behind to do so by fleeing is as simple as, that territory was never yours to begin with. It belongs to and is annexed to the country you belong and you are actually also free to try and emancipate it, becoming a sovereign nation of your own, except at such point you're victim to the possibility of being attacked and annexed by another country (maybe even the one you used to be a part of!) and you're the only one who has to figure out how to defend yourself. All the amenities you have which are given by your government are only given because of the terms of the contract; In turn, when your service is requested, you have to serve. If you don't want to serve, then first give up your rights as a citizen. Which at the end is simply fair. Summary: The government gives you a crapload of shit, in turn it asks you to do shit if it's required. If you don't want to do shit, then give your shit up first.

Well, that's returns to my earlier point where the people in charge of the drafts have to figure out where each person will best serve. Someone who can't do a physically challenging task can still do something, even if that something is making soup, that's one less combat-able soldier you have to assign to soup-making. Dumb example, but I hope it illustrates my reasoning.

I agree that drafts are bad during times of peace - I say times of peace because there are countries (like Brazil) with mandatory military service for all males at the age of 18, which is pretty fucking stupid. In times of war, drafting is a requirement. The men and women who aren't willing to throw away their lives will be doing so to at least attempt save more lives than they've lost. From a government perspective, that's the correct approach. As for the whole "a woman with training can do it too" bit, I gotta point out that out of the 20 female applicants to the Ranger school, a grand total of two women managed to complete the course. That's a 10% graduation rate as opposed to the historically-tested male graduation rate of 50%. Too soon and too little to be taken as an accurate comparison, but it nonetheless shows a gigantic deficit in the ability to master this training between one gender and the other, most likely due to the same physical differences Jericho has mentioned. All that said, let those who want to do it do whatever they want to do. And all who are drafted should serve the same. Whether or not drafted women should serve in combat roles is not up to them or their gender, but to their commanding officers' ability to determine who is individually best suited for which position so they may better serve.

My Problems with Alleged Acceptable Discrimination
Kurotsune replied to mde2001's topic in General Discussion
I wrote a huge response to this, but I'll refrain from sharing it. Instead, I'd just like to say that the bit about your school sucks and that I hope measures are taken against it, if not now, then in the future.- 17 replies

"Sound strategy, but aren' we missin' on some info? Like... How weaponized them bandits are? ...Ah, whatever. 'S 'nough for me. Miles, ah'll be at the fox." With a nod to the others around her and a slight tap on her companions' shoulder, Blackseed stands and moves outside the cafeteria. Should she be allowed to do so without interruptions, the Michi would only be found should anyone descend to the hangar, and which point she'd be seen, tools in hand, fiddling about the machinery of her mech. -

"Jus' a few, if y'all won' be mindin' answerin' me." Blackseed taps her glass absent-mindedly, glancing from Freya to Piper. "Should ah be assumin' the lack o' information is done on purpose as a part o' you testin' us?" she smiles somewhat the yousei. "An' if y'aren't, den how 'bout lettin' us know who we're huntin'? Them pirates have a leader? A name?" As she waits for the answer she readily grabs a second glass of brew, drinking it this time at a more relaxed pace. "Miles," she quips, looking to Millenium "maybe ye've some info on an' planets on A-42 with presumed pirate bases 'n-slash-or 'nythin' we can use?" She takes another sip. "'n the last question; Why would'ja need three mechs for pirates?" -
Today I've learned that foxes like to dive headfirst into the snow. https://i.imgur.com/hE36ik9.webm PS: Apparently they do this to hunt mice. Don't care, still cute.

[IC] Symphony of the Stars

Blackseed arrives before all others in the cafeteria, peering around the place as if seeing it for the first time. She takes but a second to marvel at how the construction of the top-class machine came about; the Kyle Mercenaries were known for their lavish style and high-end tech, but seeing it up close, even if not for the first time, was a sight to behold. It was her good friend, Albertus Ravioli, whom she met through a misunderstanding of identity, who pointed her and Millenium towards the Kyle Mercenaries. He arranged her meeting with Freya and consequentially brought her eventual trial for the corporation. Albertus was a fairly famous mercenary, and his influence greatly sped up the process of her tryouts, but so did the name PANTHER. They knew who she was, and she was open about it; Despite the fact she and millenium altered the symbols in their ANGEL to no longer resemble the animal - They managed to make it look like a fox, so they named the mech BLACK FOX instead - the tattoo upon her left shoulder told a different story. Wearing a sleeveless black tank-top which bared her midriff and arms in their entirety, this much wasn't at all hidden from sight; Neither were the uncaracteristically muscular features of the Michi. As more and more begin to arrive, Blackseed snaps out from her trance, glancing to her companion when they approach. "Millenium", she says with an appreciative nod and a slight grin, "I guess it's time to see what these mercenaries are made of". After her partner's reply, a woman enters the cafeteria, eliciting silence from those within it. She speaks, explaining who she was, and how sorry of a lot they were, the whole intimidation tactis that armies always employed to begin breaking in resistance and building obedience and discipline from their soldiers. Blackseed was well used to it, and didn't mind it. Instead, she simply stood attentively as the woman spoke, until she gave her cue. "Ah reckon ah may as well be ta first" She speaks out loud, her heavy back-country accent showing, "so les' just cut to ta chase" "Ah'm PANTHER, first battallion. If yer not Michi, yer prolly never heard o' us. If y'are, ye prolly hate us. Ah dun' care. Ah was trained and enhanced to fight an' ta be a spec-ops, infiltration agent. Ah pilot the ANGEL part of our mech alonside my little bud 'ere, Millenium", she nods towards the machine, "an' we'll be glad to show y'all jus' how good we can take care o' ouselves, aye?" She readily grabs a nearby cup of beer, downing in quickly in a similar fashion to the captain. "An' I'll gladly show y'all that ah can ou'drink 'nyone who's willing ta try", she finishes offering the captain a defiant smirk, before setting the glass down loudly against the table, grabbing a nearby chair and letting her heavy frame fall atop it as she waits. -
I'm not huge on giving life advice, but let's focus on this bit: So if he is gay or bisexual, you're totally down for asking him out. Okay then just fucking ask him if he is gay. Your fear of making things awkward is subverted by the fact that you will be making things pretty awkward by trying to balance being enamored with him and trying to not come off as such. People aren't stupid. In his shoes you'd pick up on it, and in his shoes, so does he. So be upfront about it. At the very least, he'll have to respect your bravado. If nothing else, you get closure. Torturing yourself with doubt due to insecurity benefits no one.

Here's something near your current avatar In a serious note, this isn't your aesthetic, I guess, but I find it pretty cool: (Geez, that picture is huge)

WAOWAOWAO WHO ARE WE CALLING OLD HERE - Oh shit, look at that. You are closer to being 12 years younger than me than you are to being my age. Aw, shucks.

I glanced over the thread and I saw you saying something about the fox being your spirit animal, so I counted it. Too lazy to check in details.

Literally no information about the elite 4 has been revealed, but I can assure you that there isn't any type of elite 8 given that they're referred to in-game as the "elite four"

After doing a quick search on this topic, I've seen that I've been paired with Dobby, Jericho, Azery(?!), Flux and Arkhidon, which makes me wonder the following: Why do you people keep pairing me with really young men? The only exception to that rule is Mael, but then he's like an ancient, so... PS Also both surprised and disappointed by a much larger amount of ships than I remember.
