Tesla gave no response, as one of the buggers leapt onto her and another tried to blast her with a shock storm. Cold, violet eyes burning an unnatural light beneath the confines of her helm and her mind a whirring blur of calculations, she turned her might upon yet another foe. The little blob's sobbing did nothing to restore the mercy that had utterly fled her heart, as the docking bays in her shoulders opened, and the ordinances within primed themselves for launch...

Multi-Ordinance Strike on Waddle Doo

Prei smacks Waddle Dee2 for 1 damage, killing it

Tesla's attack hits nothing

The Waddle Dee transforms into a star and winks out of existence

Eon rains on Waddle Dee1's parade, dealing 5 damage to it

Victoria's shot bounces off it harmlessly, dealing 0 damage

Randomly, Tesla's earlier attack redirects itself into the Waddle Dee and does a minimum of 8 damage which is enough. It winks out of existence and the encounter ends

Having cleared this obstacle, the group rested to regain their strength. Then Chronos led the party towards the ruins in the distance. They reached them without further interruption, but what they found was certainly odd. It was a giant grid of black and white. As soon as they saw it, the entire group, including Chronos, found themselves transported onto the grid. Across from them were a multitude of different enemies. A bunch more Waddle Dees, two strange, rotating creatures that extruded flames, two orange orbs of pure energy, and two armored creatures with swords. In the center of this enemy horde were two humans, Hiroki and Chronos recognized them instantly as Blink and Wine. On the left was Blink in a jumpsuit. On the right the aging Wine stood stock still in a heavy coat, the beads of sweat on her face indicated she had not dressed this way with the intent of visiting Wrath.

"Merlin, you're supposed to be on this side!" Blink yelled out.

Her shout directed the group's attention the the corner on their right, where they spotted a redheaded woman in a rather skimpy witch cosplay.

"I like it better over here." Merlin replied. Noticing the rest of the group's confusion, she added, "Blink."

Chronos looked just as confused as anyone.

"Merlin? Blink? Wine?" It said, baffled by Merlin's poor attempt at exposition, "What are you doing here?"

"What's it look like?" Blink said, "We're playing a fucking game."

"What might the rules be to this game?" Chronos asked.

"Chess." Wine said monotonously.

The actual rules conveniently appeared in everyone's minds. Also Hiroki and Tesla found they couldn't summon the physical form of their mechs but could still use some of the basic functions and they were still guarded by Favor.

~Chess Rules~

Alright, been looking forward to this one. The rules are complicated:

  • Win by capturing the enemy king
  • Everything moves every turn, actions are taken in order of initiative
  • Each turn you may choose to do nothing, move, or attack
  • When moving or attacking, place the coordinate of the location you are targeting as well as which action you are taking in bold in your post so I know where you're going
  • You must move according to the abilities of the chess piece you've been assigned
  • You must also attack according to these abilities. If an attack hits an enemy, that enemy is captured and removed from the game
  • On attack, if you capture a piece you move to its location, otherwise you remain in place as if you had done nothing
  • Except for knights, nothing can attack or move through another piece. If anything moves between you and your target square, your attack/move fails
  • It is entirely possible to friendly fire so watch where your allies are attacking/moving
  • The enemies will be moving as if I don't know what the party is doing, you're already at a disadvantage, I'm not going to make it worse <3
  • You don't actually use any actions, everything is single target one-shots
  • If you are captured your max HP will be set to 3/4ths of its standard value until the end of your next battle
  • If you capture an enemy it might drop an essence
  • It probably sucks to be a pawn

Here's the board: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11Ykr1wquv3a7CCDYAHFB1SPUooP46UI0a0xsVHqYf3Q/edit#gid=0

To start this turn off, here's the allied NPC actions for you to plan around:

Chronos does nothing. Merlin attacks H4

Prei's lips twitch upward in remembrance. It felt like only yesterday their little family had been playing a prototype recreation of this game. The rules here were slightly different, but the basic concept was the same. She took up a position next to Chronos and angled her spear downward, preparing for battle.

Prei does nothing and holds.

perplexed by much of the nonsense going on, Tesla briefly registered the heavily cloaked woman with a modicum of recognition, it was hard not to... ever since Lord had ascended, a few others had followed over the past few years to, the being known as Wine just being the fourth... the other chicks though- Blink, was that what the other Tempest native called one of em? -she'd never seen before either in person or via broadcast...

Then there was the seamless transference of the ruleset into her mind, and then the mechs...it was... odd... almost familiar... she could feel the energy, the static in the air, as if her Storm Core was fully active, but yet... the mech itself was nowhere to be seen. She dismissed it, and the static was gone, right along with the detection of the EM fields. Then she repeated the summoning process, and lo and behold, same thing, static and intense EMs all across her mind field, yet no tangible mech. What could....? Wait...

Wait...no... no it couldn't be... Watcher... the same effect he had used on them all those years ago- she may not have been conscious to actually see it as it began back then, but still... Was he around? Why would he be here? So much stuff here that needing answering... for now she felt it better to just stay put, let the situation develop a little bit more...

Tesla Holds

(Ima do this the lazy way for this update. I'll write non-holding things out more as the turns go on and there's actually things to write about. Also Chronos will make its move after the rest of y'all. If you've got an opinion of what it should do feel free to let me know)

Blink: Hold
Leon: Hold
Tesla: Hold
Flamer1: Hold
Waddle Dee2: Move to B4
Waddle Dee3: Move to C3
Eon: Hold
Flamer2: Hold
Sword Knight2: Hold
Waddle Dee6: Move to F3
Waddle Dee1: Move to A3
Dimitri: Move to A6
Prei: Nothing
Waddle Dee8: Move to H3
Merlin: Attack H4. No target.
Waddle Dee4: Hold
Laser Ball1: Move to A2
Chronos: Hold
Atton: Hold
Waddle Dee5: Attack D3. No Target
Victoria: Oops
Sword Knight1: Hold
Laser Ball2: Move to H2
Argent: Move to H6
Waddle Dee7: Move to G4
Hiroki: Hold
Wine: Hold

Victoria sits on the sidelines alongside a Sparky and a Waddle Doo who also got left out of the game. They don't seem hostile. A tub of popcorn drops out of the empty space in front of her face, landing in her lap. It was far too impossible an occurrence to be a coincidence, but there was absolutely no evidence of what caused it.

With her only path now blocked off by Argent, Merlin finds she has nothing useful to do. Merlin holds.

It was at this point that Atton remembered something an acquaintance of him once said before dying horribly "Drive me closer I want to hit them with my sword!", this causes him to reflexively stay exactly where he is, anticipating the three pawns ahead of him would in fact, move and strike before he could take one down in retaliation.

Atton holds while stifling a laugh.
