Hey guys, I just started doing showdown OU battles and I was wondering if you guys wanted to help better my team a little bit.
At A Glance ~
Teambuilding Process ~
This was the first time I really tried to make a semi-decent team, with an endgoal in mind and synergy, etc. I saw a Smog article on an alternative Mega Pidgeot set and I thought that it would be fun to try out. Realizing that I can pretty much rely on him as a sweep, I decided to supplement the ice weakness with a Heatran, to get rocks support. I added Latias just because I wanted to try out a Defog Latias with Healing Wish, and so far it seems to be pulling weight. I kinda love Ferrothorn so I stuck him on for Leech Seed/T Wave action, and then I got a Tentacruel to complete the fire-grass-water trio and then give me some rapid spin coverage, so I have BOTH a defogger and a spinner. I kinda just threw in a specs Gengar after that to fill coverage.
The Team ~
@ Pidgeotite
Ability: Keen Eye
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Work Up
- Refresh
- Roost
As I stated above, the goal of Mega Pidgeot (aka Bird Jesus) is to swap in at opportune times, set up a work up, and then hurricane the crud out of everything else to win. I have refresh and roost because the easiest way to set up BJ is to do it on a wall of some sorts. The biggest weakness here is steel, electric and rock types; I can't one shot them with +2 Hurricanes so easily. BJ basically outspeeds everything that comes up against it, although priority moves are occasionally an issue.
@ Choice Specs
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Dazzling Gleam
- Sludge Wave
- Shadow Ball
- Trick
I really only use Gengar as your typical coverage/specs trick set, which is particularly useful if I'm trying to clear the way of things that can resist BJ's hurricanes. I use it particularly to check dragons, other ghosts, and fairies that are bulky. Not much else to be said for this set.
@ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Defog
- Draco Meteor
- Thunderbolt
- Healing Wish
Although Life Orb Latias is one of the sets you'd least expect, its slight bit of bulk over its older brother is especially useful in being able to dish out Thunderbolt spam or send in a couple of draco meteors. I prefer thunderbolt as it gives the team electric coverage and supplements DM well. I'll use defog mainly if the opponent is really persistent with early game rocks/spikes and I haven't set mine up yet. I haven't had to use Healing Wish in a battle yet but if I do it'll probably be a late game Ferrothorn revival or perhaps a rejuvenation of mega Pidgeot.
@ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Def
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Thunder Wave
- Gyro Ball
- Leech Seed
- Power Whip
Ferrothorn does what he does. Late game, he sets up thunder waves and leech seeds but has the offensive capabilities to dish out damage. I don't feel the need to load 'Thorn with field hazards since Heatran can set up rocks, but I do use him to stall out opponents. He is useful in doing trio-switches with Tentacruel and Heatran.
@ Air Balloon
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 248 HP / 8 SpA / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Lava Plume
- Roar
- Toxic
- Stealth Rock
Heatran kinda serves multiple purposes all jumbled into one. I use him as early game rocks if I can, I try to toxic stall certain pokemon that check it, and then I roar whenever I feel that a switch is coming (free rocks damage) or, because he can take a hit, to roar out a pokemon that managed to set up offensively/defensively. I run Lava Plume to attack bulky physical sweepers in the case of burn and I use it against Steel types that block BJ Hurricanes; specifically Magnezone, Metagross, and Skarmory. Heatran ends up being a reliable staller that can take a hit and burn his opponents.
@ Black Sludge
Ability: Liquid Ooze
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Sludge Wave
- Rapid Spin
- Scald
- Ice Beam
Tentacool has a very odd set from what I've seen (being all offensive) but it seems to work out in its favor. It can take hits but really just takes down Heatrans and Landorus'es with its typical moves, and then surprises opponents with Sludge Wave and it's chance to poison. Of course, I use it as a late game spinner if I need rocks gone for when Mega Pidgeot can come in and sweep. Oh and the chances of burn freeze and poison are all nice.
