[IC]TotMG:DC Trouble in Traverse Town

StormLord

Recommended Posts

Something felt wrong, maybe a sinking feeling in your stomach or that little difficulty breathing, but suddenly the world around you blurred and started spinning.  The feeling of being squished or sucked through a particularly small passageway was followed by total darkness and unconsciousness.

Then slowly each person comes back to the world of the waking.  Perhaps a little shaken, dizzy, or confused, but in the same health(good or poor) that they were in before with anything that might've been dropped or lost placed gently on the irregularly tiled brick ground under you.

Spoiler

Looking around you see a small courtyard of sorts, made of red bricks and cobblestones, lit by gentle orange and black-metal lamps and the distant starry sky above.  Buildings that look almost Tudor, with dark wood framing and red tile roofs, surround the courtyard on three sides(left, right, back) and stairs on the fourth.  Behind is simply buildings with a huge wooden gate-door.

To the left is an archway to an unlit alley and beside it some kind of business or restaurant judging by the many tables, chairs, and candles strewn about.  Though it appears closed, understandable given the apparent time of night, there is another business next door a little further right with a large and colorful glowing sign that says "Items!".

Forward are brick stairs leading up to a small landing in front of a building with several more glowing signs reading things like "Jewelry" or "Accessories".  A path to the left leads to a second entrance for the "Items!" building and beyond it a small alley. A winding path to to the right leads up more stairs and back behind the central building.  Against the small retaining wall to the right of the courtyard stairs there is a large red cylinder "wearing" a black tophat almost as large as itself.  There seems to be some kind of mouth painted over a flap in the front of it, the word "Letters" appears on the top hat.

Finally to the right are more buildings and a gate-door not quite as huge as the one behind you.  Above it is a glowing sign in gold and cyan that reads "Traverse Town 3rd District".

Leo
----------------------------------------------------------------
Leo stands back up and shakes of the daze with a little "Ugh"
He takes a moment to look around at admire the pleasant Townscape around him. Nice night, well lit, the buildings looked well off and well taken care of.
The Shops caught his attention fairly quickly, an Item shop? Likely a general store for adventurers, he had certainly seen the type after escaping into the great wide world that WASENT a barren wasteland. The Jewelry and Accessory shops sounded like places to get good equipment, or at least good attunement samples.

This made him realize a pressing problem. He had almost no money, aside from a few coins left over from the village they had protected. Of course, he could always ply his trade and make some things to sell, or just get rid of some of the resources they had stocked in the ship. But that could take time depending on what he wanted.

But he recalled one of the materials he had tested. He was used to a distinction between 'Counterfeit' and 'Made with Magic' and the magic of the deluxe shard seemed the latter.

Pulling out Snow and a few samples he lightly juggled some ice and a shard of something in his hand.

"Hey snow, you can't see any issues with adding a bit of wind around your blade can you?"
"Not in particular"

Flowing mana through the Ice and shard, Leo started to speak some of his spells and bind a new enchantment into his sword. Around the blade flew chilled winds, and in those winds were formed drifting motes of golden light, fading in and out of being and growing and shrinking in size as they lazily orbited the blade

Spoiler

Leo, Seeing the shops around, and recognizing his abysmal lack of funds, decides to do something about his lack of money gain
He will enchant Snow with

Thaum>Deluxe shard+ Thaum>Eternal Ice The result is Golden Blizzard. When this Mana is used to destroy objects and defeat foes, munny is created. It is weaker than ordinary Ice Magic as a result

Alt Cast Blizzard wind

Blizzard wind (Trick) The user cast a spell that kicks up an icy wind. Dealing 1d6 Ice damage to all foes.

using

Enchant The user transcribes a magic spell into an object, adding magical components which sustain and fuel it from ambient mana. Level 1: The user can duplicate a magic based Trick they know in the form of an item. Level 2: The user may craft items which have similar effects to Magic Actions they know. Enchanted items may change functionality if they are fed magical energy which is not neutral, and will cease function if there is not enough mana to feed them

Alternate Mana Casting Casting Technique (Passive?) The user may attempt to cast a spell they know using a different type of mana, the effects of this are unknown until discovered. Spells cast like this require that at least 1 point of mana be spent. (See "Spells and Alt cast")

Snow is as follows (Discounting all the out of combat stuff)

"Attacks with this weapon have inflict chill if the attacker succeeds a SYN vs RES check. chill increases the effectiveness of ice on the afflicted target to 150% for three turns. This weapon deals 1d4 damage, and regardless of if Snow is in reserve or equipped, so long as she remains in the inventory. She reveals and tracks any interesting or strong energy signatures, drawing attention to them.
(Merit level 1): Precious and protected: This item cannot be targeted by equipment targeting effects and is soul bound.
(Merit level 2): Cautious crafting: when attempting to craft on this item, failure will not result in detrimental or destructive consequences, nor will success include negative side effects. however, the difficultly of all crafting checks on this item are greatly increased."

now

Leo chooses to use Blizzard wind for a couple of reasons

Snow already HAS

an icy effect

so it should easily compound

that Compounding and Cautious crafting will prevent snow from becoming weaker, while also making it an easy upgrade

in addition

Basic Golem Crating "Allows the user to cast vital spells concerning Golem cores, core programing, basic energy manipulation enchantment, and component integration. This Action does not require a crafting roll to succeed, but is still subject to quality rolls on the crafted golems and golemic equipment
Level2: +4 to Int when crafting golems Basic golem crafting
Level3: ""When using Golem components in a craft that is not primarily Golemantic grant that craft +3.
Level 4(Trick): The user may choose to roll an additional Random roll when crafting a golem, taking the more interesting one."

At LEAST level 3 , if not levels 1 and 2 of golem crafting should proc Leo obviously does not use level four

Leo's int before modifiers is 6, last i checked

and of course harmless fun keeps stupid things from happening

The intended result
Is an upgrade to snow that causes things to drop money when killed or smashed by her
And, preferably, a damage boost

(17, 1)
(21)

Level 3 - Lucky Strike: Melee attacks made with Snow on enemies and certain environmental objects, cause 1d4 Munny to be created for Leo to pocket immediately

Leo smiles at the results and waves snow about in the air a bit gently.
"Hey guys! I can enchant our weapons to help us get money. I Should be able to do it with just about whatever kind of energy or effect you want, if you care about that."

Takumi
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Takumi took the shift even worse then the last time. His head hurts, and hes pretty sure he landed hard AGAIN. For the third time today.
Was this going to become a trend!? did he have to deal with this every day from now on. He really hoped not. His Stomach was starting to get really sick from all the constant jerking around through strange space-warping universe hopping phenomenon.

"Please....go a little gentler....Im seriously going to throw up"

He eventually dragged himself up and stood to his feet, looking around he spotted those other two he had been dropped in with last time. He promptly found himself shaking off the nagging frustration and sickness that was bothering him, by being bothered an equal amount by how useless he had been.

He should...Probably apologize for that. Given he certainly COULD have helped. He had a Gun-JetSword, and he had Song Magic. But man, those things had freaked him out.

Eventually, he awkwardly approached them. Rubbing the back of his neck and oozing 'wants to say somethingness'

"So uh....does this just happen often? Because if it does Im going to need to start caring around a barfbag."

"Wh-wh-what the?!" Law announces, looking around frantically.

"Well, it's better than hell, I suppose." he finally concedes, looking around the area.

"Oh!  A mailbox!" Law exclaims, scampering over to it to check if he has any mail.

Quote

(Perk) Beloved Son: At the end of each plot, subplot, or hunt, Law gets a care package of Precursor materials from the Precursors. (He also starts with a small stock of materials)
2d4 Power Cells
2d10 Precursor Orbs
1d4 Eco Canisters of Each type, (Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, Black, and White.)
1 Precursor Artifact, providing a useful utility.

"Finally, civilization," Mirri mutters, stomping off to window-shop with a grumpiness more affected than anything.  She's mostly just curious about what might be on offer, but it wouldn't do to let people start thinking she might be approachable.  No way, no how.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Meanwhile, Vitor turns ash grey, dashes for the nearest trash can, and tosses his metaphorical cookies into it.

Law opens the flap on the mail canister to find a package wrapped in brown paper and string and addressed to him, untying it he finds:
9 Power Cells
16 Precursor Orbs

3 Red, 5 Blue, 3 Yellow, 3 Green, 5 Black, and 4 White Canisters.

And a small squished square block of tech with a glass dome on top, a fine purple/pink energy is swirling inside it.

Mirri finds a there aren't many windows to shop through, but through the one window in the "Items!" shop she sees a small counter of sorts with an older man leaning back in his chair, taking a quick nap.  On the wall behind the counter is a shelf covered in assorted strange bottles, several tents, and other objects.  In the corner there is a barrel that looks to be filled with many different kinds of staves and spears.

Just about the time Law finishes opening the package, everyone notices the jingle of a bell as the door of the "Accessories" shop opens and closes and a tall man with spiked silver-blue hair and pale skin steps out.  He glances up as he's putting a small package in his pocket and gives a bit of a shocked look to the sudden appearance of such a large group of people.
"Where did you all come from?"

Frigus reaches up to scratch the back of his head with his armored arm.

"Actually, never mind, I probably have a better idea than you."
He gave a quick gesture and shrug.

"Welcome to Traverse Town, sleepy little village that acts as a sort of refuge for people that get shunted out of worlds, has a bit of a mind of its own sometimes."

Leo
----------------------------------------

"Oh hey, fancy meeting you here." Leo gives a friendly wave at Frigus, putting Snow away, motes of light slipping out the scabbard occasionally.
"Is there where you had to go to meet your boss?"

Upon noting that the small...Rat Person(?) Who's name he had never caught somehow receive a package in the mail despite having just got here, Leo decided to check to see if he had anything himself.

Perhaps the mail system here was portal based and linked up to other worlds? That would explain the speed at least. He didn't usually get snail mail, but figured it couldn't hurt to check. Now that he was thinking about it, he wonders how many Emails he has been missing given the lack of a good internet connection.

Leo Proceeds to check the mailbox while also trying to see if he can get an internet connection. Ideally, he can check his Email and place calls again.

"Nah I already talked to them."

Frigus shrugs and keeps walking, moving towards and down the steps.
"They're uhh reasonably peeved, but Ebon had a letter sent and things are mostly smoothed over.  Right now I'm playing delivery boy and checking up on some older residents here."

As he notices Law and Leo's attention to the mail cylinder.

"This place actually has one of the best mail service systems around, whole city is built on top of a giant processing facility, it comes and goes from all over the place."
He stops, looking over Law's package and catching sight of the small block of tech.
"Huh, haven't seen one of those in a long time, mind if I take a look at it?"

[71]

Opening up the flap on the mail cylinder Leo receives...nothing!  However, as he pulls back the flap he hears something winding up inside and as it closes a recorded voice plays with a gratingly jolly tone.

"Send a postcard to someone you know!  You might even win a prriiiiiize!"

Leo
--------------------------------------------
Leo stares at the mailbox for a bit then shrugs, deciding he may as well try sending one. Maybe the Item shop sold them.
Of course that went back to money....

"Is there a good place to fight monsters or take quests nearby? I want to go shopping but Im going to have to make a bit more money first. Or maybe there are some Dungeons I could raid?"

"I don't know about dungeons, but there's a bulletin board around the side of the Accessory shop, they just added it and there are a bunch of odd jobs posted."
He gestures to the path winding around the right of the central building.
"Also, don't worry about waking people, everyone keeps weird hours here because it's always this time."

Stepping into the item shop Mirri hears a bell ring as the door opens, causing the old man to bolt awake.

"HUH! What?  Oh, uhh hello.  Can I uhh help you find anything?"
Mirri finds several medicines including healing potions, something called "Ether", and "Elixers".  She finds a number of types of tents and "instant" cottages.  She finds a number of staves, hammers, shields, and swords some of which have very in depth designs or are clearly magical.

"Just looking to see if there's anything worth coming back with local currency for," Mirri grumps at the shopkeep.  She takes a closer look at the potions, being of the opinion that her current weapons are plenty effective, and that no matter what armor is on sale, what she already has will be better.

Kusuke held his head a bit, but apparently took the transition better than some.  "That feels weirdly familiar." He wasn't sure what had happened to their previous destination, but it probably wasn't good. Kusuke gestured vaguely in the direction Mirri went.  "I'm going to make sure, uh, everything goes smoothly over there."

A few moments later, a still-groggy looking Kusuke walked into the shop, hoping against hope that they stocked coffee.

"The weapons look like something you could find back home, but other than that, no, not really." He shrugged. "I think it's been a while since we last met." He couldn't help but frown; the last time he could remember them meeting was... Unpleasant. Not that it had much to do with her. ". . . hopefully things go better here."

"For the sake of this place, I hope so," Mirri steps back from the potion rack, shaking her head, "Just quick-acting medicines, it looks like.  Useful, probably, but nothing too flashy."

"Thanks."
Frigus takes the small brick and looks it over nodding a few times.
"It's a Flowmotion assistor.  Some of us Keyblade wielders use Flowmotion spells for greater mobility.  This lets you do it either without knowing the magic, or if you want to save every bit of it you can.  They're pretty valuable."

He hands it back to Law.

Leo finds the bulletin board and gives it a once over.  Perhaps disappointingly some of these jobs are incredibly mundane, such as cleaning gutters or weekly garbage runs.  He finds a few that might be the party's speed though.

First is someone complaining about one of the town's power lines being exposed in the 3rd District and worn through again.

There is an anonymous conversation about rumors of a "monster" attacking people in the alleyway leading to the 4th District.

He finds a note complaining about "Something lodged in the clock tower" in the 2nd District.
A note asking if anyone else has been hearing weird noises coming from "the cave".

Leo figures he could find more if he tried, but this is a decent amount as it is.  Most of the jobs don't offer much, if any specified reward.

"I guess we'll need to find some way to get local currency before we can do anything else here," Mirri heads towards the door out of the store, "Fortunately, if there's any constant in the world, it's that someone's always going to be willing to pay for a little violence."

Leo heads back to the party and starts talking

"Alright I checked the job board, and a few caught my eye. There's a power line worn down and exposed in the third district. Simple repair job. I could probably fix the line itself in a couple of minutes, Ten Tops. But it sounds like it keeps happening so I wouldn't put it past there being a monster or something there gnawing the lines to feed on the electricity or whatever.  Im currently thinking about saving it for last and handling it on our way out, given how easy it sounds."

"Secondly, Rumor has it there is a monster attacking people in an alley way that leads to the fourth district. If its hunting people, and is known, its likely more dangerous and of concern then our hypothetical electrovore. So I would put it higher on the list, ....Then again a hypothetical electrovore is nothing to sneeze at, it might have a ton of power stored up in its body it could attack with if it get agitated so-"

Leo ends his sentence with a shrug. Not really sure where on the danger scale he rates his electric monster theory over actual concerning monster rumors.
Snow takes her own turn to interject, and explain the third task

"The third job wants us to investigate the clock tower, apparently -" "Would 'Hypothetical Electrovore' be the name of a monster that eats electricity and uses it to teleport around via quantum mechanics?" "No, You would name it a 'Wire Jumper', now shut up and let me finish." Snow sighs, and moving on from her Electricity Pun Name for imaginary monsters proceeds to finish
"Apparently something has gotten stuck in it. Probably somewhere high up if no one has gone to get it already. Or dangerous. You might be interested in that one Vitor. Clock Towers are usually made to last, and well kept as landmarks"

"And the final job that looked interesting is some mysterious sounds coming from some cave somewhere. Might be a monster, Might be a late night rendezvous, might be some guy doing experiments in a quiet place, might be the wind."

Leo takes a moment to think.
"The rewards don't seem to be listed for most of these, but once that involve fighting or exploring should give decent payout. Especially with the money making enchantments. That being said, I would LIKE to get all of these."

"Well if you're going to be working on the odd jobs you should definitely take this."
Frigus pulls out a furled up piece of paper and hands it to Leo.
"This place is a bit maze-like, the whole thing is filled with paths that double back and dead-end alleys."

Unrolling the paper Leo would find several copies of a map for the town.  Reading it shows the group is currently in the 1st District.  The 2nd and 3rd Districts are reachable by two doors from this courtyard area, and the 4th and 5th Districts are down the Dark Alley by the cafe.  The Cave is marked as being off the 3rd District.

"If you complete any of the jobs just go talk to whoever is in the Accessory shop at the time and they should be able to pay you if anything was left with the request."

Kusuke spent a moment longer peering at the menu before following Mirri out and back to the party. The Ethers probably weren't actually what he was looking for, but it was worth a shot. When was the last time I slept? He wasn't sure if he actually remembered, which probably should have been more worrying to him than it actually was. He tried to get over the fact that they were being briefed by Leo of all people, and resolved to double check the information himself later.

For now, though, he'd thought of something. That. . . otter person, Law, if he remembered correctly. He reminded Kusuke of someone else. The tech he carried around also gave off a familiar impression, despite not resembling anything he was familiar with. "Hey, Law, do you mind if I take a look at that? I want to see if I can puzzle out something about how it works."

"What a strange locale." Ena would first check the mailbox, simply because it seemed that was what everyone was doing. After that, she'd follow after Leo.

"Mind if I join you, Leo? I'm quite curious about this place. Though I do advise we take things one at a time, perhaps the clock tower first? We might see something from up there that might help with the other complaints."
