For my Steel run, up until Corey I used Klink, Forretress and Wormadam-T. (With Piplup as my starter.) You get Burmy and Pineco from headbutting trees (for Burmy you gotta get into the little garden in the Peridot ward), and Klink can be found in the Underground Railnet if you enter from the Obsidia Ward. You could also request to have someone give you a Steel type from the mystery egg that you get in the police quest. You can get Pawniard or Drilbur that way. (If you don't use your mons until they acquire the Steel typing and are desperate for a big team, then you might wanna choose Pawniard. But do know that Drilbur can only be gotten from the egg as of now, whereas you can get Pawniard late-game.)

^To add to that: Hang on to all those shards you can find. You'll need them.

Wrong Impressions you initially had of the characters
ZEL replied to Monochrome_Complex's topic in Reborn City
^Where in the game are you currently at? Because I don't wanna spoiler you, but you've still got it wrong. -
I remembered blabbering about Fern a bit after E15 came out, found the post, too. http://www.pokemonreborn.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=14860&page=2#entry343299 I pity him, though how much depends on what we might or might not learn about what happened back when the Onyx girls had their drama / whatever else caused the rift between Fern and Florinia. Fern is one of the characters I'm most curious about when it comes to future character development, because up until now it feels like he's so bitter and tries so hard to hide it, but something's clearly eating him, and I wanna know what. He may not be a sympathetic character at all, but... I kind of like him anyway? In the sense that I like him as a character, rather than a person.

What NFE Pokemon do you like more than their evolutions?
ZEL replied to ty_taurus's topic in Pokémon Fan Club
Torchic is the freaking cutest starter of them all. And then it turns into Blaziken in the end. Sneasel and Buizel. MARILL. I also like Pidgeotto better than Pidgeot, but it'd feel a bit odd putting them with the others because I still love Pidgeot a lot anway. -
After months of lurking in the shadows, winter has come to reborn... Hi.
ZEL replied to Gh0stStark's topic in Welcome Center
Never too late to stop lurking! I mean, true, we're a bit of an odd bunch, but shhh, that's what makes us so charming. hah From what I see on your profile, you've got a good taste in 'mons and in music. Power Metal's got to be one of my favourite genres (Death Metal tho) so I'm just gonna assume you're cool. Hope you'll enjoy your stay here. Though they say it's permanent, so on a second thought, maybe I should wish you good luck. -
Maybe it's just me, but I don't think that was actually meant to show a chance for him to redeem himself. I don't think that at the point where you meet him in Iolia Valley, Bennett actually understands why he should apologize, and what for. He clearly still seems to fail to realize that he cannot change Luna's feeling no matter what he tries. He hasn't grasped yet what's the issue. Before he can make an honest apology and better himself, he needs to clearly see what's wrong.
-
Bennett shows that he is curious and passionate about knowledge when it comes to things he feels emotionally invested in. His hobby is something he excels at and he's portrayed as studious and possibly also a fast learner. He seems to be striving for personal growth, not just strength, and that's what makes me believe that he is in fact redeemable, because while he can't undo the mistakes he's made, he does have the potential to see the error of his ways and improve to be a better person. I forgot who brought up the possibility of Bennett's character theme being metamorphosis, but I like that idea a lot and see it as a likely outcome. Bennett is someone who needs to learn to guide his determination and passion with more care, instead of acting on greed. That's really what he needs to understand the most - that he is being greedy about what he wants, and that he doesn't have a right to everything he desires. I dislike the idea that a character is "irredeemable" after they've done a bad thing. Bennett still has plenty of chances to prove himself as a better person than he is now. His immaturity and lacking understanding of boundaries is nowhere near the level of characters like Sirius (who legitimately feels neither sympathy nor pity for anyone else). He's just that - an immature boy who is being emotionally manipulated by a far older person with ulterior motives. He is being exploited, and this is what turned him into the kind of character we currently know him as. El knew exactly what he was doing. Bennett may not be a super sympathetic character who we'd all rush to protect with our lives, but with all his flaws, he didn't turn into who he is right now completely on his own accord. He just needs a chance to redeem himself, and I think he'll eventually get it.
-
Hmm, I thought Bennett's crush on Luna was made pretty clear from the start on - when El asks about her, Bennett immediately starts talking about her in gushing language, to the point where he gets cut off because he's rambling too much. Everything he says about her or his interactions with her makes it really obvious that he's got it bad for her to the point of being obsessive. And the way he insists that he's going to MAKE HER like him is unsettling to say the least. Honestly, I personally actually found Bennett's characterization, especially in terms of his feelings for Luna, a bit too excessive. The game sure makes a point of beating me over the head with it.

Ohey, another winter person! Welcome c: I much prefer a cold climate over heat any day, snowy weather is the best. Sadly we don't get all that much snow here (once every few years there's a notable amount, but then we get winters like the last one, where barely any fell at all). I feel ya on the part about not joining a lot of communities. Between joining Reborn and discovering the other community I'm active in there's been what, 8 years of nothing? Settling into new places is hard. I daresay we're an interesting bunch, though, so hopefully you'll enjy your stay here, however brief or long it may be.

HERE COME DAT AMA O SHIT WADDUP If you had to meet your ten year old past self, what are three positive things about your current life that you'd want to tell them about? Assuming, of course, that talking to your past self wouldn't alter the timeline, because that's why time travel is such an annoying thing to write about.
-
Depending on what character you want to draw you could also ask for any details you need. I've been under the impression that Ame is glad to help out artists who have questions. Most of the characters also already do have fanart, maybe it could help as well to look at that and see how others have drawn them.

Ayy, same favourites! Jean is definitely my fave when it comes to character development. I remember getting into SnK and immediately thinking "That one's a jerk, I bet he's gonna be cool and I'll like him". I was not disappointed. He has some awesome moments coming up, gonna be excited to see them animated. Also, that one Connie thing. Because I like the way my feelings get broken.

[waves non-native speaker flag] To me the those things are pretty much synonymous, though people often seem to use edgy for when they want to put the meaning in a negative context? I don't automatically associate edgy with being bad, though. And I've seen it used in a neutral context before. No idea, really. I'm not even sure if we have a truly equivalent word in German. ...That said, I am now imagining various characters in Hot Topic kinda outfits and it's beautiful.
-
Personally, I'm pretty happy to have a 'painfully edgy' Pokémon game that gives me a bit of a challenge. Everyone's cup of tea? Certainly not, but I enjoy it, because sometimes I don't want subtle edge. Sometimes it's fun for me to have a story go all the way. If I feel like playing in a more peaceful and bright setting, I can grab a canon game of my choice. To give me an incentive to play it, a fangame has to offer me something that the canon games don't have, and in Reborn's case that's the full load of dark'n'edgy stuff. As far as the outfits etc go, I never really found something to complain about with them, because it fits the setting, with the shabby city and its gangs. You'll notice this with a lot of real life gangs/groups as well: members trying to set themselves apart from everyone else, making sure everyone knows on first sight where their place in society is, where they choose to belong. To go with Cain as an example, he IS that kind of flirty and weird guy who you could reasonably expect to find hanging out in the nearest cheap club. ...Or maybe I'm too used to Metal subculture to find edgy emo things noteworthy any more, whoops. Reborn has significantly less men in lime green fairy costumes or duct tape bras, though.

Oi, Sparky, I think you'll like this guy! I think I approve of you, too. Always cool to have more soccer-interested people around. But what clubs and countries do you support is the question So hey there, welcome to Reborn! All the sanity jokes and "here forever" jokes have already been made, so please forgive me for being boring and settling for "enjoy your time here". Your distraction didn't work on me because it's not a bird, so maybe next time you wanna try that.

Not gonna lie, I'd love to toss the damn thing into Mount Doom the lake or something Then claim that I tragically lost it. I mean, that ring is a bad luck charm if I've ever heard of one. Being the Seal of Pain doesn't make it any better.

Yeah, with Shelly it makes enough sense to me to say that she's just that meek. Her entire character arc, after all, was about how she needed to overcome her fear, and it wasn't until Ametrine that she had the "click" moment where she realized she'd have to be brave. Her teaming up with you against the Meteors was exactly that. (And the part where you and her are in the orphanage had her clearly motivated by the thought of saving Heather.) Shelly is a talented battler, but for most of the game so far she did not have the strength to stand up against others, especially not alone. She also expressed on at least one occasion that she feels more safe and confident when she's with someone she trusts. So if nobody else were to put up a battle, she'd be less likely to as well.
-
I do think they'd probably be highly wary about fighting Sigmund, knowing he would try whatever he must to get them. But I find it odd that none of them would be attempting to at least put up a fight. Charlotte, for one, sure doesn't seem the type to surrender willingly. Which is what made me headcanon the bit about how their reflexes and battle skills may have regressed to an extent, as they are out of practise. (And this would go both for the trainers and for their Pokémon.) Sure Sigmund would go to any length to get the orphans back, as we've already seen. But it's not in character for some of them to give up just because they might lose. We've seen them readily team up on Sigmund when you free Heather, so they clearly do have the guts to challenge him.
-
That doesn't explain their lack of action the slightest, though, because as we've seen over and over, the orphans are terrified of the prospect of returning to Sigmund. They know he has the legal right to take them, but they don't want to be taken, and thus nothing would be stopping them from at least trying to defend themselves. It's not legal for them to be on the run together with youin the first place, after all.
-
One explanation that I came up with during my first run was that perhaps due to how long Sigmund has kept the orphans away from their Pokémon and from taking on challenges, they simply are no longer used to actually being able to call upon their teams to defend them. Since the orphans appear to not have gotten much, if any, access to their teams, they would likely lack the "fight" response to getting into danger, as they have been lacking the option for a very long time. This does bring up the question of how the kids got so strong in the first place (in Anna and Noel's case at least) if they never got to train, but it's the closest I've come to making sense out of the lack of trying they've displayed. Cain and the PC would be much faster to send out their Pokémon because they're so used to it. I do assume that at least to some extent, the Belrose sisters were able to develop their skill when they still lived with their parents. Charlotte's story of how she thinks their parents died does mention how she was out in the cove with her Pokémon, and snce her mom was the Fire leader, she surely encouraged her children to develop their skills early. With Noel and Anna we don't know how long they've been in Sigmund's care, but I'll admit I find it harder to accept their high skill level. If they had been outside and able to train, I wouldn't question it as much, considering Shelly and Heather exist in the same story. But locked-up it does make things hard to believe.

That was exactly my point, though. If they decided to leave out entire scenes or parts of scenes from the manga, then they can cut down on the length of other scenes as well. If they can make cuts to the content, they can make adjustments to the pacing. The part that I named as an example above was just one of many where the anime did not include the whole scene from the manga. And it sure was a lot more important than stretching out moments where nothing happens for the sake of building tension that we already have. Especially if said scene builds up a connection between the protagonist and the season's main antagonist. It just irks me, and from all I heard of other people's opinions, the pacing is one of the most commonly criticized aspects. Edit: Of course, there's also those parts where Armin's involvement in things gets replaced with Mikasa. 'nother thing where the anime makes changes to the content of the manga. They totally are allowed to do things differently. If this stuff goes through, then I don't see Isayama going "b-but I wrote this scene to be longer".
-
I do hope that the pacing problem is fixed a bit better in season 2. One of the things that bothered me about the first season was that they didn't hesitate to drag us through several episodes of the Trost arc no matter now stretched-out many of the scenes felt (especially around the part where the Garrison are attempting to kill Eren), while cutting down on stuff like Eren and Annie's interactions as trainees. The one scene of Eren using her hand-to-hand combat technique against Jean at dinner didn't do their relationship justice in the anime (what with missing the part where Annie tells Eren it was bad, and he asks her to teach him). Definitely not enough to justify Eren's hesitation and failure to fight her in the season finale, or Mikasa's questions about his feelings for Annie specifically. The manga has a pacing problem itself especially in the beginning, but the anime isn't forced to follow it, not when there are things they could rather show.
