Maybe. But I feel that if you want to play casual with your friends, any Smash game will do the trick.

However, it's funny to think that without these bad competitive mechanics, Brawl would have replaced Melee just like every new Smash entry have replaced the previous one.

brawl and smash 4 have mostly been phased out since their successors were better in almost every way.

and then you have melee which due to wonky mechanics is still unique, so it still has its own fanbase.
