You're not missing much. You might be able to grab a few egg moves or slightly better stats, but you can generally chug on through the game well enough with just the tools provided at face value.

Anyway, as AuthorReborn said, you´re not missing out on that much. Ability-capsules and nature-change help out a lot if you want a good pokemon

Empoleon has pretty good typing with Water/Steel, decent base stats, and a pretty cool moveset, even in-game if you're willing to breed a little for it.

I joined team magma, and I ended up getting a houndour at some point. I think you got a sharpedo by joining team aqua, but don't quote me on this, I'm not sure.

Yea, it is helpful at the very least. Keep in mind I am super early on, so I can't do that, but if you can Spark, go for it. It at least gives you something Water type to use lol.
