"Yo Idei, Belros. What'cha favourite stuff to eat, eh?"

v3kGZOP.png

Belros was a bit confused by the question. Was this really the time or the place to be asking about our favorites? Well, I guess there's no harm. Besides, I bet the dancer would be happy about the chance to escape.

vlAnt0A.png

"Favorite things to eat huh? I mean, I suppose seafood? While I was a child I used to steal fish from the market an fry'em up over a fire. Or if I felt lazy I'd fish for them, though it was always quicker just to take. Sometimes, on heists, if it was on the way I'd try to take something fancy like crab legs. You'd be surprised what food people have stocked if they have money to burn." Belros shrugged,  "I don't know why you want to know about this now of all times, but there you are."

Darius witnessed Clarisse get taken down by the scavenger and his face became one of worry and concern, moreso than before. He was considering striking the thug that struck her down himself, but his allies did the job for him. Thus, he put his tome away and, running up to the downed teammate, pulls out his vulnerary and applies the healing salve to her gravest wounds in an attempt to keep her alive.

Move to D7, use Vulnerary on Clarisse.

"Yeah well it's a good way to pass the time. And dat dancer ain't goin' nowhere. Leave 'em be." Cass shrugged and chuckled in a very manly manner, which included raising his chest up high and letting out a long sigh of relief. He wasn't gonna say he also pretty much grew up on the streets. Not yet at least.

"If you were lazy you'd fish 'em? I though stealin'd be the easy way. I myself enjoy sweets. Say what ya will, dem cupcakes hit me hard right 'ere." He pounced with a fist onto his chest where the heart was. "Ya Idei we've not heard yar fave food!"

Flesh. Charred, steaming, rent. Flesh was what she smelled in those final moments, the burned stench of ozone and iron-rich hint of blood mingling right along with it. The brightest light she'd ever seen, just barely grazed her arm, yet in such brief contact dropped the fury of a thousand gods and then some upon her mortal coil. Fires. Her entire body afire, nerves spasming, organs screaming, but nowhere near the volume of her own cries, nowhere near the death rattle that escaped her lips as she fell to the floor, limp, smoldering, bleeding.

Dying...dying...dead. She could feel it creeping closer. Each beat of the heart slower than her last, each breath shorter, every sense fading. And still, her entire body kept screaming despite her failing perception. All but the arm... no, no, the arm was silent, the arm may not have even been there anymore, for as little as she felt from it.

Darkness. Closer. closer. Almost here. She heard them, in the distance. Their shouts, their screams of horror, their voices, closer and closer. Speaking not in their usual whimsy of sweet nothings, whispered in the wind, but true tongues... tongues like those spoken by the likes of man, tongues she for once did not need to decipher. Tongues that spoke of smiting and smiters, of ruined flesh and fleeting life.

Tongues of frantic folk... scarred folk... folk trying their best to contain some horror, but failing miserably as it expanded right before their eyes. The pulse in her chest wavered... then finally halted.

And as the darkness finally took her, all of them cried in great, pained volume, a single word... a word that she never heard.

Spoiler

Honey and Lillac, carried on a faint wind. Beneath her was not the hard stone of the manor, but soft grasses. Radiant, rampant with blossoms and flowing in the wind.  She opened her eyes, blinked once, and saw the nigh endless sea of virgin plains spreading out all around. Flowers... flowers  wherever the eye fell, the crimson of poppies and violet streaks of agapanthus dominating the landscape with unknowable variants of other specimens laced in between. Apple Blossoms rained down from on high, drifting into the wayward winds and down the hill into the rolling plains. The sun was nowhere to be seen and the world was fixated in eternal twilight, gold and magenta light pouring over the land, and all that it illuminated, the boundaries of an ethereal kingdom.

3tWgNpl.png

"W-where.... how?" She made as if to stand, expecting a torrent of fire in every muscle, but being met with nothing. Despite the massive surge of power that had struck her down, it was as if she'd never suffered the blow to begin with. Her entire being felt lighter, in fact... almost as if some burden had been lifted... something beyond the mere weight of her coat.

dC4rnwf.png

"So you're awake..." the comment made her spin on her heels, leaping away from the source in surprise like a blur of crimson. There beneath the tree not but a meter from where she'd woken up sat man, head buried in some tome, barely paying her any attention and yet his eyes noting her reaction all the same as he scanned the scrawled words.

"about time. I was beginning to wonder if you ever would."

3tWgNpl.png

"Wait, am I-"

dC4rnwf.png

"Dead? yes, though I'm afraid you got lost on the way to hell. It's rather simple though, just head towards the horizon- any  old direction will do honestly -and keep walking..."

3tWgNpl.png

"...."

Sighing, the man finally rose from his tome, marking his place with a dog-eared page and flipping it closed.

dC4rnwf.png

"I'm jesting, you foolish child. No, you're not dead technically, but you might as well be... as severe as your injuries are. Hells, at this point, the line between realms is about as blurred for you as it can really get. Which made it all the more easier to get you here..."

3tWgNpl.png

"uh...huh... and where is... here?"

 dC4rnwf.png

"Here is here. and Nowhere is here. Where you are, trying to determine exact places is a meaningless task, everything simply is where it is. Nothing ever runs out of space; it's pointless here, like trying to count all the grains of a shifting dune. We are all merely... wisps... floating in the Ether. No miles, no landmarks, it's all just fluid, changing, like the tides of a sea...just as we designed it" as if to prove some sort of bizarre point, he reached out with the tome as if to offer it to her, before she could even move a muscle though, he released his grip and dropped his arm... but the book simply hovered there, as if it was where it belonged and would always remain. Then as she watched, it warped, distorted and twisted until it had taken on a new form- a basket filled with the same Agapanthus that grew so wild around them -and fell to the ground and rolled away before transmuting once more- this time into a swirl of apple blossoms that carried themselves along on the wind.

Cadence returned her attention to the man... only to find him no sitting on the opposite side of the tree, reading the book yet again as if his little demonstration had never happened...

GgMDpZE.png

"what the hell is even-"

dC4rnwf.png

"Don't think too hard child, you'll hurt yourself. Afterall, it took your father some time to make the adjustment, and well... you might have his raw talent, but you're not quite a genius. I haven't seen much thus far, but I've seen enough to know that."

GgMDpZE.png

"oh... ok, wow, just gonna... be like that. Screw you too then- look are you gonna explain why I'm here, without speaking in riddles and crap, or should I just pick a direc..."

dC4rnwf.png

"Hmmm? ooh yes, yes, right. I mean, surely I can't expect you to glean such a thing using your own inference, oh no, no... I only bear the features of your household to a perfect tee, gave you plenty of clues as to your current state, and even mentioned your father...fine. You're here because of Mara. or rather, the thing that looks like, walks and talks like Mara. The thing I went to such trouble to kill, and have been trying so long even after to make sure it stays dead. I am Julius, the one that I've no doubt she told you such utterly riveting harolds of during your time together."

GgMDpZE.png

"..." she didn't know if she wanted to deck the arrogant sod right then and there, or just grit her teeth and bare the rest of his backhanded jabs just to hear the rest of the explanation.

dC4rnwf.png

"You will find, by the way, that trying to exact Physical violence against me- or anyone else you might meet in this state -is largely pointless. Yes. I know. No, I cannot read your thoughts right out of your skull. It's just very easy to read someone when they wear their emotions on their sleeves... and glare at you like you just killed their house cat."

GgMDpZE.png

"Ya know, you're really shaping up to be even more of an ass than she led me to believe..."

dC4rnwf.png

"Indeed, an ass I may well be, but an ass whose company you are nonetheless stuck with for the time being. So I suggest you sit down, shut your mouth, and listen to what I'm about to impart onto you... go on, anywhere will do..."

"Ugh, what the?" Mumbled to himself. He wasn't paying attention to, nor expecting there to be a troubaour behind the walls. He was careless and now his head started to pound quite furiously. His vision turned blurry and it became increasingly more difficult to keep balance as everything seemed to sway back and forth. He wobbled his way over to idei, proceeding to then lean on the doorway wall. He looked up towards the archer on the horse holding out his weapon for him before speaking,  "Mind if you hold onto this and let me borrow some medicine? What ever those guys did it's making everything all hazy." Belros made sure to keep his other hand near his blade, just in case some of them tried to come for them. Though why wouldn't they in his current state.

Examining the walls for structural weaknesses and archer holes, and trying to keep an eye on the armored knights down the corridor from them, Idei hadn't at first caught Cass' question, and the following brief conversation with Belros had been equally lost on him — background white noise against the anxious clattering of Kite's hooves on the stone, occasionally muffled by the manor's carpeting. Would they make it out of here alive? He knows he should have faith in his own abilities and those of his allies, but the truth is that he barely knows many of them, despite having trained and worked alongside them this long. It fills him with a pervasive sense of unease, and reminds him that nothing in Veritias is like home, where no member of the tribe was unknown to any other. Everyone had their place, and were a vital part of keeping the great wheel turning, as his uncle used to put it. You never know how the one beside you might have helped you in some way.

Once he had left that safe haven to see the world beyond the sands, everything had changed. It still continues to discomfit him, how everyone else in the world treats each other like strangers. But when there are just so many people, he guesses it can't he helped.

SccrHVN.png

"Hm?"

Cass' call of his name brings his attention back to the present, and he mentally chastises himself for letting it wander. He cannot die here, so far from the blessings of Earth and Sky. He decides it's the closed indoor space that's making him nervous.

P4XGaub.png

His favorite food. He gives it a moment's thought. "Sand pheasant, freshly plucked and roasted. Especially when you have hunted it yourself. My tribe calls it glogi." A small smile lights on his face at evidently fond past memories. "There is something about eating your own kill. Maybe it's the taste of triumph."

2mBYxb1.png

That being said, the world outside of Arcadia isn't devoid of all good things. He shrugs a little, as though sheepish. "I also like that . . . bubbly drink on the mainland," he adds. "The one that has many colors. I've never had anything like it back home." He's since learned though that the drink is reserved largely for children, and most grown men have abandoned it for various kinds of ale and other liquor. Maybe because it's still novel to him, but he prefers it over the bitterness of alcohol, especially since the alcohol here is also so different from that which he is used to having, growing up.

Before anything more can be said, though, the heavy clanking of steel upon stone alerts him to the enemies' approach. He squints against the searing flame of Meteor as it fires off beside him, Kite dancing to the side as Helena brings down one of their foes. Once more the battlefield comes alive — the men on the other side of the wall begin to shout in alarm, and Idei steadies himself and his snorting steed in preparation for their arrival. "We will talk more later," he says to Cass. The corridor beyond the wall is crowded, and he's fairly certain that if he tries to ride out, he will only be putting himself in unnecessary danger. The great wheel. It's best to remain with one's allies, he decides, and work together to support each other. He'll stay back, and move defensively for now.

SccrHVN.png

Then Belros staggers in front of him, and Idei blinks in surprise when he makes his way over, a longbow in hand. Medicine? "Of course." Untying the vulnerary from Kite's saddle, he hands the pouch over, taking the bow in return and instinctively hefting its slender weight in his hand. The thief looks unstable, and Idei considers telling him to fall back for now, but with the enemy approaching so quickly, there's little time to rearrange their position. "Be careful," he says, a little more sternly than he intends.

"T-thanks." Belros spoke before just starring at the medicine handed to him. What was expecting to do with this? This is used to patch up wounds, not stop whatever kind of magic they placed on him.  "Damn, it's so hard to think straight right now! Screw whoever did this and this hood" In his fit of anger and confusion vigorously took off his hood for no apparent reason.

QZP0uO6.png

"Just calm down here Belros. All you need to do is not die." Maybe now it's best just to not think. Going off pure instincts would be be the best way to go about this. Though first things first, he may as well use whatever Idei gave him to patch himself up. He already did a lot of work on the wounds earlier so even in this state it shouldn't be too hard to finish.  "Alright, that should take care that. I just wish it could've helped with snapping out of whatever it is they've done to me." He held the Vulnerary back to the archer so they can swap items back.

As Belros applies the vulnerary onto his remaining injuries, Idei frowns at him in thought. Whatever the magic that had been cast on him had done, it seems to have interfered with his focus. Deadly, in a place like this. And he's already tasted what it means to lose concentration, even for a moment. With a glance down at the pouch in the spy's hand, he moves Kite a bit to the side.

2mBYxb1.png

"Keep that," he says. "You might still need it."

Just then, the exchange in the musician's shop not too long ago comes back to mind, and the sheet with words that Cass had asked the shopkeeper about. He looks back at the guitarist over his shoulder. "Cass. Do you have something to help him?"

"Of course, I also enjoy the good ol' fashioned casserole, my namesake, beef included." Cass couldn't stop himself from grinning at Idei remark about bubbly drinks. He states his words calmly and watches Idei run off except over there, he also catches a glimpse of a certain person...once again in a pickle.

cassfin6_by_ninjacyndaquil-db02u4s.png

"Can't ya keep safe even for a damn moment, eh?" He storms over to the duo, giving Idei a raised eyebrow look before shrugging and pulling the precious lyric from his pouch. "Aye, I've got it, no worries." He shrugs as he bites down on the paper to hold it like that while grabbing his guitar.

cassfin5_by_ninjacyndaquil-db02tsg.png

"Lady said it worked for flutes and whatnots, but eheheh, I like it a bit more rough. Lesse how it works." He adds as he starts playing the melody. It was sort of ancient in a way? With his guitar and how it worked though, it sounded more rough. What once could've been a gentle melody was now just as powerful, if not more, given Cass's playing. "Take it as a reiteration of the song, ha! I know, lesscall it a remix!" He grins, still biting on the notes, fully into the short segment of the song he'd memorized (which was more than enough for the battlefield), he bobs his head, playing the final accord which leaves the cap'n and the spy feeling rock-harder than ever.

A bright flash of light nearly blinded Darius, but he managed to shield his eyes at the last minute. The scream of agony, a sound he once was fascinated by, now chilled him as it permeated the air. Once he looked at the source of it, he noticed Cadence falling. It's pretty clear that she had been struck hard by, judging by the light and the suddenness, thunder magic. He then gets to witness Karik hoist the fallen teammate onto his back. The shaman glanced behind himself and noticed Emilee nearby. He knew what needed to be done.

"I'll take her off of your hands, Karik. Just...let's be careful." he said before carefully taking Cadence into his arms, making damn sure not to touch her seared arm before laying her down on the ground on her back between himself and Emilee.

"Emilee, I think Cadence might need some more healing right now..." he said to the sister. Indeed, a lot of healing might be needed.

Take Cadence from Karik, carefully drop her on D8.

"We've little time before they save you, and I'm sure she's already told you the very basics, regardless how twisted from the truth certain parts may be. So I will make this brief. Where you are now? This is a place called an Aether Sphere, the ultimate fruit of the labor Mara and I endeavored on for so long... Imagine a massive bubble, and within that bubble, countless of smaller, individual ones. And within each individual bubble, a person, or group of people, if they so desired to be together. This is the ultimate result of what she may have described as "A way to overcome death"

Zn4783x.png

"So how does it work?"

dC4rnwf.png

"Well... the Aether Spheres weren't actually originally designed to make death obsolete you see, but rather, to make the baser of human nature so. Greed, envy, wrath, lust, gluttony, pride... all the motives that might drive someone to turn on his own neighbors, convince himself it's fine to habitually wrong and rob others of life, property, and happiness. The idea was that these Spheres, the smaller individual realms within them, would allow for any who use them to... live out anything they wanted, without actually bringing harm upon those around them- just like I told when you awoke, everything here changes constantly, depending on who's sphere you enter. And technically, there's no real concern about space. Moving on. Despite all she'd seen, my mother was still a bit of humanist, and optimist, she beleived if there was at least a way to do what they do in actual live, exercise the baser urges to kill, destroy, cheat and plunder somewhere where it could ultimately harm none, that perhaps gradually, those base desires would begin to ebb from society at large. To her credit... it was a noble goal, when we started.

But it was also a naive one. But the Elder Ones humored her anyway during the development, helped her for no other reason than how convicted she was in her mission, how much she truly wanted to see an end to the chaos and madness that others grow to accept as normal. Hell, you've already fought several pieces of human trash who were prime examples of what she was trying to fix in this world. The pirate gonzap, who was so obsessed with the lure of plunder and so arrogant that he didn't even know the meaning of retreat, the bandit queen and her cohort of hirelings, the rogue and his guild underlings...the baron who lusted after fame and wealth, yet was too lazy to get off his ass and do an honest days work rather than trying to seize it from those who weren't... the very man and his servant who trapped you all in the manor and have their dogs trying to kill you. You know full well what it's like out there, and what you've seen is merely the tip of the actual iceberg."

Zn4783x.png

"Human trash eh? Well, at least we seem to actually agree on something so far..."

dC4rnwf.png

"Indeed, how quaint. Now shut up with the snide commentary and keep listening: The Aether Sphere project, it... was a massive failure to say the least. We.... lost our initial batches of volunteers within the order. A flaw in the relay process, their minds were... cast to the void, in a way. Lost to us. Whatever occurred also Cut the connection to their bodies completely in fact- going into an Aether Realm, it was originally like sleeping while you were there. Your mind and spirit were active, but your body was resting until you return. Obviously, theirs were beyond our recovery... and the incident was not pleasant to watch either. You've been by thunder, it's how you got here afterall- well imagine the massive bolt that coursed though you just a little bit ago... and boost that pain by a full order of magnitude.... they were the worse convulsions I'd ever seen, just before we lost them. Some of them thrashed so hard their broke their own spines... it was a day I'd not forget.

and Neither would my mother... or rather, Mara... for after that point, I think that was the transition where the woman who'd raised me and my siblings and the one I had little choice but to work for and humor for the rest of my days in the order, changed places. I don't know if such a horrible failure was just too hard for her to take, seeing the one thing she'd endeavored most towards crumble. But either way, she was not my mother anymore.

She began to slowly but surely, abandon the notion that people could actually stem or better control their desires if they were simply given a harmless outlet to indulge in the more destructive ones. Her dream was dead to her, but in its place another theory was born. A much, much darker one; people would never change, they'd keep killing each other, bringing about disaster and suffering. And at the end of the day, she tried to find the common denominator between it all, besides humans... since they'd never change and all, obviously. What she came up with was death itself. Murder specifically, The ability to take someone else's life to further your own goals was what she really obsessed over, but... it's little point drawing a difference at this point. And so she set about a great many paths to try and make death meaningless. for without the ability to permanently kill someone, bandits, raiders, tyrants... they'd all find their go to method of advancing their own selfishness obsolete. And those who were struck down by them, only to rise again.... well, the hope was, that after a few decades or so grace period, for all the inevitable chaos and transitioning to take place, eventually it would dawn on people that violence was no longer a viable mean to resolve conflict- when your greatest keeps coming back no matter times you kill him, perhaps it would be more productive to simply do battle with words rather than steel... resolve your issues in a way that does not require blood.

And Cadence, when I say a great many, I mean, a Massive number of dead ends and failed attempts. to accomplish that. There were nights where we did not even sleep or eat, simply kept cycling through to the next idea on the drawing board. Slowly but surely, my will to keep up the charade was waning, and I was seriously considering if the amount of time and resources she was commiting to her obsession was beginning to threaten the Order's continued ability to exist."

GgMDpZE.png

"And so what, you betrayed your own family, friends, and colleagues and led the church to execute them all in the name of the goddess? Yeh, it's sounds heroic and all, go you, but there were still innocent people there who weren't an actual threat, weren't there? This whole story sounds like your trying to vindicate yourself of any unnecessary blood on your hands..."

dC4rnwf.png

"Silence you insolent brat- do you want to hear the full perspective of what you've been dragged into or not? By all means, please, if you wish to unleash that Madwoman's designs upon the unsuspecting world and become a virtual slave to her will, then just walk away. Your friends will have you up again eventually- maybe with a slight tremor or stiffness at the site of impact, but nothing to terribly gimp you in the long run... if you do, it would speak fucking volumes  more to me of your character than any amount of the shitty quips you're in such a habit of giving. Perhaps I misjudged you. Perhaps all that talk about the freedom of choice is still backed by the mind and heart of a little girl who doesn't know the full weight of what she speaks of. Perhaps your father was wrong about you as well... it would be a pitty if so, he's actually decent company, a true man of Magical theory. Theres more common sense and open-mindedness in him than I've seen scattered across whole islands full of people."

QrssKjV.png

She closed her eyes, rubbed her temples, turning towards the horizon... she'd never admit it, but his last few verbal strikes actually stung, somewhere deep inside. She said nothing more besides

GgMDpZE.png

"Fine. Go on, you venomous sod. I'll at least hear this out, so don't keep me waiting."

dC4rnwf.png

He did so without skipping a beat, "Necromancy, control of the flow of time, etc... she came up with a vast majority of attempts, each more out there than the last. Some of them, like necromancy, might've actually come to some sort of constructive end result had she not gotten frustrated with the time their research and development took. Others, like controlling time, I had a very strong hypothesis would fail regardless what she thought up. Eventually, she ran out of ideas. And then her mind began to revisit past ones. And it was during that time that she got the notion into her head... that if she could somehow perfect the Relay process of the Aether Spheres to actually get people inside of them, but intentionally incorporate the same deadly backlash to the body we'd seen the first time... she hypothesized that the mind and soul would remain trapped there, even after the body was gone. A one way ticket to effective immortality and perpetual existence though. She saw it as her magnum Opus, for in her eyes it answered all her gripes at once.

Within the Aether Spheres, death would become meaningless, and all who inhabited them would be able to have influence over a realm all their own- a place to stimulate and do with as they so pleased, without bothering others. Indefinitely, in theory. A paradox that was quite interesting- it both addressed and made entirely moot the purpose of making death obsolete to begin with. But it was horrifying nonetheless. What Mara effectively planned to do was to kill and send as many as she could into the spheres, and stop at nothing until all people were truly free from both death and the tangible consequences of basic human nature."

GgMDpZE.png

"...damn, thats-"

dC4rnwf.png

"An affront to all that she and the order had stood for prior to that point? Yes. Yes it indeed was, very good, you're paying attention at least. The Sidow always had one purpose, and one purpose only- give power to the meek and downtrodden, give those chaffed, bloodied, and abused by Fate a way to rewrite their destinies into a more just tale... and to advance the knowledge of the dark, and prove that pure and utter evil was far from what lurked within it. Prove that it matters not what magic you use, all men have the potential for evil inborn, and regardless what tools are at their disposal, if they wish to exercise it, they will find a way.

She violated the first command with her intention to subject everyone to her scheme regardless of consent or not- that's not giving power to anyone, it's taking away free will. She broke the second in much the same way- she would become the writer of their destinies by forcing them into the Aether Sphere. And she broke the third command... because regardless how noble and naive she started out, there was just... a very special type of vile that my mother's ultimate plan carried. Imagine all human achievement, every choice between right and wrong that anyone has ever made, and imagine it all becoming pointless. Imagine a world where all was fake, constructed. Where effort meant nothing, because you could simply desire something, and it would be yours. What is the point of living if one does not have to make decisions, and live with their consequences? What growth can a person ever have if the moment they don't like something, they can undo it with a snap of their fingers?

None. That's how much. None at all. And there was another issue as well- leakage. When many people with negative desires were gathered in a realm, there was a chance that the residual energies of their realms constantly twisting would leak out into the larger space, and seep into other spheres... you've seen the testing grounds already, when you wrecked on the shore... that was no dream. That was the fruit of mara's labor. There were two Aethers, you see, the one she worked on, and the one you stand in now that belonged to me, as a control variable of sorts. It was an issue she was still working on when I ended it all. But I did try to do it peacefully, you know? Go to the other respected members of the order, seek their aid in filing for a trial of competence against her, take the reigns myself and destroy every note, observation, and diagram we ever made.

But most of them had been on her side for years... my mother held about as much sway over that group as the royal family does over all of veritias. She heard, obviously. And then she branded a traitor, had my excommunicated, and allowed members of the order to hunt me down and try to bring my head to her at their leisure. My own god damned mother had become something I did not recognize, and still don't recognize. I didn't want to go to the church- I hated the church, but I quite literally had no other feasible option if I wanted to stop her, and keep living afterwards to ensure her was buried, and buried, and buried... until no one would ever find it again...

Yes, I killed them all. Yes, they were my friends. Some of them my family. All of them my colleagues and good people at heart. But by backing mara and refusing to listen to an opposing argument, they were misguidedly supporting an evil so great that if they had just stopped and opened their eyes, they would've turned and joined me in opposing her in a heartbeat. But they didn't. And the church would suffer no prisoners from a group like the Sidow.

And so I struck them down, to keep what she working on from ending this world as we know it; all the bad, right along with all the good too. And I hated every second of it, and they knew it. But it gets even better after the Sidow were gone- just to drive home what I had done and punish me for ever being apart of her work to begin with, they hailed me as a hero, created a new household under their rule, and forced me to become it's vassal, on pain of joining my former friends and colleagues. That part was of course unspoken, but if you'd heard how the Archbishop of the time phrased it... well it was a thinly veiled ultimatum. Become an enforcer of their will, or become the next thing they set their zealous sights on and destroyed in the name of their goddess.

and like I said, I could not die, not until I'd found every trace of every project she'd done and hidden backups of...And when I died, my daughter took my place. and her daughter. For a time, they remembered why it was I had accepted the offer. But eventually things are forgotten. And rather than taking any free opportunity they could to complete my original endeavor, my descendants spent them furthering the church's word however they could. And well... the rest is literally family history. History I'm not proud of, and neither are you apparently. Hmph, well, add that to the sparse list of what we have in common."

"Cade!" Rayne shouted immediately as she watched her friend just get smote by a wicked bolt of lightning. She hit the ground like a sack of wet potatoes. Hard and with a thud. The others moved rather quickly however and got her to safety. She was being healed before Rayne even knew it. "l hope she's ok." Rayne thought to herself. She clenched Beau's reigns to her chest. looking down at the ground. "l'll never forgive you if she's hurt. l'll never forgive any of you ne'verdowells for this!" Perhaps it was the pressure of the current situation but something was making Rayne more serious than usual. lt'd have been a scary experince to see that for anyone who knew her.

The sensation of floating faltered, as her vision of the Scholar blurred. It only lasted a moment however, before the connection restored. She had known this feeling before, was aware of what it meant.

QrssKjV.png

"Look," she sighed

GgMDpZE.png

"This has been... interesting and all, I guess, but just what the hell do you expect me to do here?"

dC4rnwf.png

"What do I expect you to do? well... in all honesty, the answer is to ignore what I've told you and let yourself become her pawn. What I'd prefer you to do however, is to keep acting as though everything is fine, whenever she comes to you. She's grown complacent, over the generations, thinks that I no longer pose a threat to her, that I've gone silent. She can hear nothing of what is said here, because she's too arrogant to bother listening in the first place... and even if she wasn't....regardless, if you continue to... take her 'lessons' when she offers them. Just play along with her, humor her madness, and she'll have no reason to suspect anything is amiss...

She wants you to become her successor after all- to finish what she started. Sooner or later, she'll share where you can find the last records of her work, or at least hints. She'll naturally want you to reconstruct what was lost using though studying them. I'm requesting that you destroy them however. Burn them, shred them, or cast them into the sea to be ruined and lost to the waves, I don't care how you elect to dispose of the last pieces of her Final Solution, only that you do."

GgMDpZE.png

"What about her though, she's definitely not gonna be pleased if this succeeds. I've seen what she can do, an I'm not exactly eager to go poking a sleeping bear like that..."

dC4rnwf.png

There was the slightest hint of a smile on his face. Then it was gone "My dear girl, you've carried the answer to that very question with you all along. Ever since you fled that event she orchestrated. She didn't bother hiding her research before the paranoia and obsession kicked in. And that will be her very undoing. But not right now- not while there are still copies unaccounted for, scattered by the winds of time to the corners of god knows where.

This however, is a very advantageous opportunity that is in our possession. If you play her game long enough, she'll lead right to what I want. You put an end to her now, however, and there's no telling how long it will take to find them without her help. No telling how long the threat of someone else finding a copy and trying to replicate the results will linger.

It's a simple matter of quid pro quo. Once you've gained her confidence enough to make her, at the very least, give you a lead on where the last few backups that I and the early members of our house missed are, I'll tell you what to do to get rid of her for good and all. But not a moment before. There would be far too much left to chance that way, and I plan to end all of this in one fell swoop. So... do we have an agreement? It really is a win-win here; I get to see a travesty stopped in it's tracks, and you won't have to face the wrath of a mad woman's specter..."

"Alright... fine, I'll do it." she sighed "so... even just a lead would do, right? You'd tell me how, even if I didn't physically have the remnants?"

dC4rnwf.png

"Correct. Just mere leads or clues would not be the most... optimal of outcomes, of course, but in the case where they were the only things she is able to provide for whatever reason, it would... still be sufficient enough information to start us on what needs to be done. At the very least, with hints and details, the locations could be narrowed down, traced and pursued however far they must be. I would have no more need of her to remain active... you could get rid of her whenever you pleased after that point. But understand that I'd still expect you to follow said leads, and destroy whatever you find. Quite the generous clause to this deal...considering I'd be relying on your word alone by that point.

GgMDpZE.png

"Look man, I don't what the hell is your issue, but I keep my promises. You don't screw me over, and I'll show the same courtesy to you. I hold my end, you hold up yours, and hopefully we won't have to ever talk to each other again."

dC4rnwf.png

"Hmph... I'm not terribly reassured, but very well. It's probably the best out of you. Oh, and before you go- a last word of warning. When you next see your Grandsire, do not, under any circumstance, let Mara goad you into facing him. Delay her, convince her you aren't ready and that it would be pointless. She thinks she can teach you enough between now and then to close the gap, but... you draw a weapon against him, and you'll be dead before you even so much as move. She wants the two of them dead, to get rid of potential obstacles, but she wants someone to finish her work even more

Regardless, that is al-"

Darkness. Darkness fading, as grey filled the world. Slowly, the fencer opened her eyes, and looked around. The smell of burned ozone still lingered, along with the hint of charred flesh, but her body no longer screamed. She looked down at her arm, and to her her surprise, it was still there. Her hand however...

She flexed the fingers. At first, there was no response, then slowly, they extended, curled back, extended again. Numb, tingling, the only thing she could feel. It was as if she were an outside observer to it's cumbersome movements... quite literally, given how it tremored. She flexed her shoulder next, and was relieved that at least the arm itself seemed fine.

She tried to ball the thing into a fist. It just barely managed the motion, still shaking. Scowling, she rose to her feet,

J1HZpp0.png

"Thank You..." two words, practically whispered. It was all she said to emilee. In silence, she looked at the lingering effects of the mage's handiwork one last time, let the hand fall back to her side, and braced the other hand on the hilt of one of the blades at her side. Almost as if contrast to it's sister limb, it's grip turned the skin bone white, trembling as well, but not out of weakness, not out of infirmity. Quite the opposite, in fact. And so to did her whole body, as she stood there. Her eyes for once betraying nothing of the thoughts brewing just behind their lenses.

5CEKNqZ.png

"... Is that bastard still alive?" she asked, to anyone who might happen to be in earshot "please,Tell me he is...."

Darius expected another attack to come from behind the walls or around the corner. However, the line of knights stood firm and unmoving and no more surprises happened from attacks from anywhere unexpected. Finally, the group could focus on breaking through the knights. "This should be a good chance to try out this new tome..." he thought to himself as he pulled out his Carrion tome and, after moving to position, channeled the energies from it straight at the central knight, standing at the front of the line.

Move to D2 and attack Null Armor 2 with Carrion.

Belros' head keeps pounding, though he can tell it's slowly going away. Well, that was until Cass starting jamming out. He couldn't tell if it was helping or making it worse. What he does know is that they can't keep standing around.  "Alright, Idei, Cass!" He spoke aggressively not caring due to his headache.  "Follow my lead! We're gonna run in there, take some of them out and run back! Got it? Good!" Giving the two of them no time to respond Bel charges forward, blade in hand to attack the nearest man in his way.
