  1. I'm back! And thank you for your patience (I've seen the view counter grow, we're past 9,500 views now, and we're getting near a very impressive round number...). I hope you've been doing well -- or as well as you could in these, er, eventful times. For a certain definition of back, anyway. I've been busy over the past months and I haven't written much. I'm still unclear about what happens at some points (say, the Aya battle, to convey how little I advanced, but it's not the only one). But now that my situation is stabler (speaking in relative terms at least) than in the past three months, I think it's time to start posting again. And if chapters don't come on schedule because my buffer isn't as filled as before... then I'll be late. To be honest, I was a bit uncertain about how to go back to the story. I'll be honest and say that we're going back to a slower pace for the three following chapters at least. Some events have consequences and I think it's important to procrastinate writing when I don't know what to write explore how a few characters are doing after the events at Apophyll. To be even more honest, I don't know how good a decision that was (or how good the subsequent writing is). You'll judge, I guess. (Did I mention that I welcome comments and feedback?) Here comes... Part 3: Mind Games “Now it is such a bizarrely improbable coincidence that anything so mindbogglingly useful could have evolved purely by chance that some thinkers have chosen to see it as a final and clinching proof of the non-existence of God.” Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Chapter 46: The End of the Day Character rates:
  2. Woah, what a ride! That game is both original and really good. I really like the atmosphere and the music, the entire plot is very well made and I look forward to seeing the next releases of the game (perhaps even play them)!
  3. Hi Aggrin, Here's an 18-move solution, telling regularly what the puzzle should look like. To my knowledge, it's shorter than most video tutorials.
  4. Little Odd One Out update: the hiatus is extended. I probably won't publish any new chapter before mid-March.

Study stuff is a bit tense now -- who would have guessed that procrastinating was only a temporary solution?

Still, given the view counter of the thread, it seems that you (or some of you) are still reading the story, and that's great!

Anyway, I guess I also wanted to share that I've finished the first draft of the first chapter of Part Three. I'm not quite satisfied of it for now, but I'll let it rest for a while -- Gabriel's subconscious really, really disturbs me.

  5. Most major battles from a certain point on. My latest important battle (in my latest playthrough) was Kiki and I think only Medicham had 31 IVs everywhere. IIRC the devs also decided during beta-testing to reduce the IVs of the Pokemon you’re fighting
  6. I’m assuming you’re in If so, I advise to fight Sirius. I’ll give the reasons in spoilers:
  7. That’s an understatement here. Girafarig gets Baton Pass, Agility and Nasty Plot. I used (an underlevelled) one to sweep Ciel in my first playthrough, I couldn’t come up with anything else. The strategy was to set it up on Togekiss, starting with X SpDef, then Agilities, and Nasty Plots (with healing items to soak the damage, eventual crits, and T-Wave iirc), and then Baton Pass to Walrein.
  8. Small Odd One Out update: the hiatus is definitely going to be a long one. I don’t expect to update anything before a month at least, perhaps even two. There’s work I have to go on procrastinating actually do, that sort of thing.

Also, I’m kind of stuck figuring out character motivations because at least a few points make very little sense. I’m not going to go into detail because spoilers.

Here I just want to share my frustration with a certain underground event which I can’t imagine consistently.

The first point is that there’s a big plot hole I don’t know how to avoid.

The second point is that if I ignore it (after all, there are plenty of characters who do weird stuff for unfathomable motives, right?), I only managed to make up a few scenarios, none of them satisfactory.

Scenario 1 is boring and also undoubtedly artificial.
Scenario 2 is... rather gross and doesn’t really solve the conflict.
Scenario 3 is clever but somewhat naive, compared to what the parties involved are.
Scenario 4 is more realistic than scenario 3 but much edgier, quite disturbing, and I’m not sure how the good guys get out.
Scenario 5 is my only idea of resolution but feels completely like a deus ex machina and nullifies the conflict.

I’m trying to find scenario 6 which will solve this little riddle, because 6 is a perfect number, right?

Right... I may have found a solution to that little problem. It’s disturbing, ludicrous, very stupid, and probably just a tiny bit of “informed brilliance”? I really, really hope it’ll actually make sense. Not that there aren’t going to be some serious issues before that scene...

  9. That poor Syl – that must have struck awfully hard. Let’s just hope he’ll manage to handle it instead of doing something too rash.
  10. Tyranitartube's one is incomplete if I remember correctly, but it goes pretty far. There's HeroVoltsy's one, and doubtlessly many others that you can search on youtube.
  11. A useful way to find answers to that kind of queries on your own is to find a video playthrough of the game, and find out which spot you're in, and what they do next. If you just beat Kiki inside Apophyll Academy, then the next step is to use Amaria's boat to reach and explore Azurine Island. You'll find a house with a light shard in front of it, and the plot will progress as you enter it.
  12. I'd need to check it again, because it's been a while, but I think the humiliation is for people who antagonized her (Fern, the jerk barring the way to Opal Bridge, etc -- not unlike a bunch of "better" characters in terms of alignment, in different stories). [Warning: this is a tvtropes link] She's (I think?) the one who escalates the confrontation, but not the one who starts it. I don't think she humiliated (or liked humiliating), say, Shelly. Fair point for Reborn, but not sure about the original Defiance motivation. That may have been a part at the start, but now? That might be a bit too cynical. Then again, I'm not the one comparing Vanilla to Mao. Yes, that makes sense. It's always about morality, or at least morality as they perceive it. As Candy said, with large doses of "ends justify the means", and you're probably right about the bloodshed they're willing to accept. I'm afraid I also have to disagree on the "cheap tactics". I don't think they're a kind of weakened morality, just a logical necessity. Both Vanilla and Jasmine know for a fact that their opponent hates their guts, wants them dead, and does not fight honorably. They want to live. Ergo, they have to defend against the treachery that they know is coming. And the best defence is, well... Uh... Are you sure that's what you mean? What Mao did makes me very nervous about Vanilla now... (short version: the death toll that can be blamed on him easily rivals that of WW2). Yes, and it's very good (and probably very realistic, mindset-wise) this way! It would be strange if some of the characters believed they were evil and not justified in their actions, because few people do.
  13. Happy new year Candy! That’s a very fitting end to J’s origin story arc. It puts it inside the main continuity and provides her with (sadly) very understandable motivations about her place in Everland. But now, I’m wondering what kind of society Vanilla wants to make when (if?) she comes back to overthrow the Queen... if the “compromise” (well, not that everyone had a choice in the matter) was that the Underworld suffer for the Overworld, is she going to make everyone equally miserable? Or does she (or someone else) have a better plan? (I’m pretty sure that we could suggest a few ideas after two centuries of political reflections and experimentation)
  14. Just... what?? This entire episode is awesome – every single twist in it. A lot of the stuff doesn’t seem to make full sense though...
  15. I'm probably grasping at straws here (and it still feels widely improbable, but still), but I wonder if the Chief of police is as clean as he seems... His shape looks a bit like the mysterious guy who's leading the Lonardos (and Leonardo is pretty close to that name, not to mention that Lucile calls her husband "Lee"). Also, he keeps insisting that Syl stop being a detective, and his officers are inefficient at best, probably corrupt and criminals in their own right at worst... I mean, I know it's improbable, but still...
  16. The second part of The Odd One Out is now fully online.

There are many drawbacks to trying to be Sherlock Holmes. Some are obvious -- but one which isn't often thought of is that you need a very particular kind of enemy to pull it off.

  17. Yes. Honestly I can't see the point, worldbuilding-wise, of cheese strats. Why on earth wouldn't everyone use them against enemies outside their level, especially when a Pokemon battle can have a lot of stakes? So I needed some serious drawbacks, which I tried to make. Namely, they take a lot of time to take effect, they're not as effective as they should against stronger Pokemon, and so on... It's okay, and they'll live (at least, I currently have no plan or reason to kill them off if the game doesn't). Merry Christmas (or happy holidays) to all of you who read this post! This is the last chapter of the fic of Part 2. There'll be a significant hiatus afterwards (don't count on the next chapter being in less than a month), I need to flesh out my ideas for Parts 3 and 4. Also I have late homework and I really need to settle on a thesis topic but it's not as relevant Enjoy... A little note about the pictures: the layout of the first floor (or second for American readers, I meant the lowest floor which wasn't more or less ground level) that I'm viewing for the Academy isn't the one on the pictures. I'm thinking something more motel-like (sorry for the comparison), a covered corridor with rooms, and a railing. Chapter 45: Dereliction Character rates: Death count: Player's note: Author's note:
  18. Thank you for your comment and for reading! I'm very glad you liked it. Apophyll is a decent way to add some stakes and emotion to what is mostly a glorified detour, but in my opinion it's still strange. The heroes know at this point that there are forces in Team Meteor that they cannot hope to defeat, and they still charge in. It's admirable in bravery but does not actually reach the goal. Hence Gabriel's trick. To be honest, I'm not very comfortable derailing canon too much at this point, because it's always a hair away from disaster, and keeping all the pieces in place after the butterfly effect strikes may be harder than I can handle. Altering motivations for events, or what precisely happens (a bit like what I did at the Orphanage, or perhaps the Corey fight or Blacksteam) is fine. Anyway, Gabriel has enough tricks up his sleeve that canon will be left behind... at some point. So unfortunately, for now, it'll be the same trends as canon plotlines. Thank you for your comment and for reading! I guess you have your answer now (for the five mons). As for how this progresses, I'll upload the answer within a few days (that finale is hard to get right).
  19. I didn't notice the last video you just posted... and couldn't believe how I was going to live with the cliffhanger. I really like how it's going so far -- the serious case that makes Sylvester an annoyance to most criminals, now they're trying to have a talk, and then the direct, permanent threat... I'm not too sure I understand the resolution of that special episode though -- what exactly is Mordecai proving? (apart from him being brave and decent at heart, when you dig very, very deeply). Keep up with the series, I love it!
  20. I'm not exactly the drawing type... but I wanted to procrastinate wanted to write a little stupid something about Rejuv. Obviously, this is spoilers for all of V12 (and a bit of WLL I guess).
  21. They're outnumbered, outprepared, thoroughly outmatched. And yet they must not lose.

How can you fight so strong an enemy?

The Odd One Out has a new chapter.

  22. There'll be another Sigmund bit soon enough, in perhaps five chapters? But it's complicated for himtoo, even if he's quite the bad guy... Anyway, that is my 252nd post, a very round number on a Pokemon forum, isn't it? How fitting that it's also when I upload one of the chapters I have been most eager to write (although conversely, this means that I'll be more upset if I missed it... never mind). Before starting to read, please take a second to glance through Chapter 43 and refresh your memory. Please keep the situation in mind. And please try to think, if only for a short while, of what might happen. Of how it might be prevented. And enjoy! Chapter 44: The Art of War Player's note: Character rates:
  23. Random guy: "I have all this open space so I can run inside..." This sounds rather familiar... I find the names of the outlaws rather surprising: "weak lowlife", "pathetic criminal"... ... And the plot thickens. We go from low-profile cases for rather low-profile stakes, but it's hinted that this may very well escalate... Ominous.
  24. Isn't the usual sentence "here goes nothing"? Granted, it doesn't make much of a difference in this particular case... I about felt this way when I watched a Reborn playthrough (before playing it). And it's certainly justified here... how can they destroy the PULSE when Solaris and his full Pokemon team is standing between them? How can they hope to make a difference?* You're welcome? You had been asking for news of the children for a while... It's a bit short, but I feel that it conveys at least some of their situation. I'm not sure about what your mixed feelings are about though... *Hint:
