I think you should rewatch the series, as you seem to have misunderstood a core aspect of her personality. She has no confidence in her abilities, thus she constantly seeks approval from others to try to cope with her massive inferiority complex.

I was avoiding spoilers btw. I know about her life before arriving to Tokyo-3… just avoiding spoilers.
SpoilerShe's having complex about her own existence since her mother abandoned her. After her mother's death, Asuka tries hard in everything she does, surpassing people's expectations on her. For Asuka, getting praises from others gives value about her own existance. People will look and care for her as long as she perform above their expectations.
