[Trespassers V2 Subplot] Okami: Stains upon the Canvas

GodofGamingRWBY

Recommended Posts

Spicy HG took a step back while she recovered from her previous attack and reassessed the battle.  Glancing between Mitsu and the Onryo's reactions she raised one hand palm up and clutching a small red burst of flames.
"You should've died when you had the chance Demon.  Now burn."
With her words spoken she let the flame rise, growing to many times its previous size and causing the temperature of the room to jump several degrees.  Particularly bright flashes are reserved for each of the enemies in the room, catching them in strokes of flame not unlike solar flares.

Spicy HG uses .EXE Conflagration inflicting each enemy with a Burn effect for 3d6+12 Fire damage for three ticks.

"Ghhhh...  I won't fall to this..." She very well might, but Lexiel refuses to go down without a fight.  She casts Wall of Denial, creating another summon, this one blocking for herself.  The wall has 45 MHP, does not counterattack (unlike Lexiel's other summons) and is impervious to all status ailments, and to all damage not dealt by weapon-based attacks.  Natural weapons count as weapons.  This triggers the Soul Warden, healing all allies (including each of Lexiel's summons) for 5 HP apiece, assuming it's still around when the wall is summoned.

Lexiel has 3 mana bonds.

Battle theme

Spoiler

Mot, Kino, and Emna hold their turns for now…

With a flash of red, the Onryo dashes forward, becoming a blur as she flies around the room and slashes at various members, dealing 26, 40, and 29 damage to Kino, Mitsu, and Spicy respectively.

Though bloodied by the Onyro’s attacks, Mitsu manages to hold on and strike Ubume 1 for 80 damage, felling it in one swift blow.

The other Ubume, though losing their partner, decides to take a step back from the raging goddesses, instead switching its focus to the fellow undead that was Enma, slashing at her for 22 damage.

Spicy, now thoroughly pissed, practically ignites the entire room, waves of flame igniting every demon, yet somehow sparing those who fought alongside the Goddess.

The Ogre continues to lay where it is, seemingly lifeless, as the fires begin searing its floating fruit (for 25 damage)

Ako, noticing the fact that the Onryo nearly felled a Goddess, puts aside the fact that the other was starting to burn down the inn with her flames, throwing a two barrier slips at Mitsu and Lexiel, along with a flurry of flower petals twirling around the wounded Goddess, healing her for 13 HP.

Spray manages to get up to Lexiel, despite all the fire and heat being thrown around, and heals her for 18 HP.

Lexiel does herself a favor by summoning a Wall of Denial between the world (save Spray) and herself, healing everyone else for 5 HP.

The fire and heat created by Spicy continue to rage on, the pulse from the flame she held vaporizing the other Ubume whilst burning the Onryo for 22 damage.

"Oh no...  Come on, get there in time!"  Lexiel will summon a Spark Trooper to attack the Onryo, or if she's dead the Bud Ogre.  The Spark Trooper will, following Lexiel's orders, deal [synergy]d4 damage to its target, and then heal the non-summon ally with the least HP remaining for [intelligence]d4 HP.  Lexiel's synergy and intelligence are currently both 6, so unless she's buffed or debuffed before the summoning the Spark Trooper will deal 6d4 damage and 6d4 healing.  After attacking and healing, the Spark Trooper will harmlessly explode.  If the Soul Warden is still present when the Spark Trooper is summoned, it will heal all allies and summons for 5 HP.  The Spark Trooper has 1 HP but since it explodes at the end of the turn that doesn't matter.  Unlike Lexiel's other summons, the Spark Trooper can attack on the turn it was summoned.

Spicy HG's visage and intent remained unchanged even as one of the Ubume was reduced to little more than cinders and soot.  The temperature of the room yet continued to climb as more flames lashed out from her, to the point it was nearing uncomfortably hot for her allies and oppressively so for her enemies, while the walls of heat reinforced a simple message; there would be no escape.

Spicy HG uses .EXE Conflagration once again, inflicting each enemy with another stack of a Burn effect for 3d6+12 Fire damage for three ticks.

"Vanish into nothingness as all grudges do." Mitsurugi moved in for another strike, aiming a slash at the Onryo just as the floor seemed to erupt beneath the spirit. The damage to the building was an illusion - but the heat and force of the attack was not.

Attack the Ubume again with Eruption, dealing (3d8+16+14+11)*1.2 damage and bypassing damage resistance!

Battle Theme

Spoiler

Mot, Kino, and Emna hold their turns… Again…

Standing amidst the flames, the Onryo snapped her head in Mitsu’s direction, right before becoming a blur once again, slashing into Kino and Enma for 27 and 30 damage respectively as she made a mad sprint towards Mitsu, clashing with the goddess even as her power and the flames began to wash over her being. In an odd twist of fate however, the Onryo managed to strike first, driving her bladed fans into her torso for 21 damage… A wound that would’ve been far more disastrous if not for the protective slip of paper that slowed the blow just enough. It hurt, but the goddess would live on. As for the Onryo, the flames continued to eat away at her, dealing 27 damage…

Right before Mitsu’s strike landed, a large explosion of heat and force launching the Onryo away and slamming her into the very throne she had once sat on, dealing a grand total of 66 damage.

The Ubumes hold their turn, as they are unable to do anything thanks to being split in two and vaporized respectively.

Spicy intensifies the heat, adding more flames to the growing tide.

Twitching back to life, the flower upon the Bud Ogre’s back closes itself, protecting the fruit inside as the demon slowly rose to its feet, letting out a roar before charging at Ako and slamming into her, dealing 31 damage and knocking the Shrine Maiden back. Though at the same time, it’s seared by the fires left by Spicy, burning it for 46 damage.

Thankfully for Ako however, the blow wasn’t enough put her down for good, allowing the Shrine Maiden to press one Barrier Slip to herself while throwing the other at Mitsu, another gust of Sakura petals weaving through the flames to keep the goddess up, healing her for another 12 HP.

Spray, always the helper, does his best to patch Ako up, giving her 17 HP to use up.

After taking its sweet time to arrive, the Spark Trooper finally lands in the burning room, taking a quick potshot at the Onryo as they struggled to climb out of their ruined chair, dealing 10 damage, and then turning to heal the heavily wounded Goddess for 15 HP before disappearing with a little pop. Additionally, the Soul Warden does their magic, healing everyone on Lexiel’s side for an extra 5 HP.

Another pulse of flame weaves through the arena, ticking down the Onryo’s life by an extra 21 damage.

5 mana bonds?  Excellent.

"These creatures violate the laws of this world," Lexiel invokes, "May we who bring justice upon them be empowered!  Let the sphinxes' gaze pass on the righteous with favor!"

Lexiel casts Sphinx's Revelation!  Mitsurugi is healed for 3d4 + 6 HP, and reduces her longest active cooldown by 3 rounds as an ethereal sphinx made of shimmering blue and white mana manifests briefly, hovering behind her.  The magical construct nods down at the goddess, sending a wave of warm, restorative energy and cool, comforting logic flowing through her mind.

Spark Trooper is on cooldown for 3 more rounds

Wall of Denial is on cooldown for 2 more rounds.

Seeming to finish channeling fire for the time being Spicy HG turned her attention to the Bud Ogre who had recently started to actually participate in combat.  She brought her glaive up with crackling energy and gave the creature a swift, raking slash.

"Sit back down."

Spicy HG used Sealing Slash on the Bud Ogre, dealing (2d10+10)*0.75 damage and making it unable to use non-item actions for two turns.

Battle Theme

Spoiler

After spending time wall driving in circles, Mot finally gets the opening he was looking for as the Onryo crashes into the throne, aiming his sights on the demon as she began to clamber out of the wreck. Then, three heavy shots ring out as Mot opens fire, each hit striking the Onryo’s mask and dealing 70, 78, and 73 damage, the triple shots causing a loud snap as the Onryo’s mask began to crack open.

Though, in response, the Onryo’s eyes flashed towards Mot, an inhuman screech erupting from the demon before it rushed forward, passing by Lexiel’s wall and Mitsu (dealing 32 and 29 damage respectively due to the bladed fans) as she charged Mot, striking down at him for 27 damage.

… But, in the heat of the moment, the Onryo’s back was left wide open, and though Mitsu was wounded, she still had the speed needed to take advantage of it, blitzing forward and cleaving into the demon for 122 damage, nearly splitting the spirit in two and causing her to stumble forward, bladed fans dropping from her hands, her hands grasping at her chest as blood began to pool out,

“No… No, this is… Why must you gods continue to torment me?! I did nothing wrong, NOTHING! YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO TAKE WHAT I'VE EARNED!” the demon growled as she fell to a knee, another crack forming in her mask as she desperately tried to stay up, even as the fires began to spread to her bloodied robes.

Likewise, the Bud Ogre attempted to roar in defiance against Spicy’s will, only to be slashed across the face and forced back down, the bud on its back opening again to reveal the fruit within. It could’ve struggled more, but with its master defeated, the fight seemed to have left the demon as well, causing it to simply sit and wait for the heat and flames to consume it.

"Be silent."

The command - no, the declaration - seemed to echo about the room. A bloodied Mitsurugi turned her head to pierce the demon with a dreadful glare, eyes ablaze. "You have threatened my people and defied my will, and now you shall pay the price." She whirled, striking out with her longer blade; a red spray announced that it had found its mark, the top and bottom halves of the onryo separated with a sickening crunch of cloven bone. Her assault did not cease; the next strike was with both blades, pruning the vengeful spirit of its troublesome limbs with the wet sound of steel parting flesh, and as if the entire world had slowed, she struck once more with swords paired, finally decapitating the demon. Mitsurugi stopped in place, chest heaving and arms still outstretched in the aftermath of her fatal strike - and then the ogre exploded, divine energy bursting forth from within to calamitous effect.

The goddess remained where she was, an unreadable blend of emotions and the faint shifting of her clothing being the only indicators she hadn't frozen entirely. "It is done." She took three more breaths. "It is done." The second was quieter, wavering, as if it were linked to the slow stop of the onryo's head upon the now-stained floors.

Spray had been out hunting with friends and family before. Seen rabbits and deer field dressed. Even before this assignment, his time with A.I.M. had resulted in him seeing more than his fair share of violence.

But nothing like this.

He tried not to look too long at the severed head that rolled past him as he finished bandaging his current patient. Once he was done, he began to slowly approach the swordswoman, medkit in hand.

"So... do you need any medical attention? You took a few hits in that fight there..."

Better to focus on the problems he could solve.

Sparrow Inn

Whatever the Onryo might have said died within her throat as the Goddess before her settled on her judgement, the pieces of its body falling to the floor without much dramatics, followed up by the Ogre's explosion of blood. For several seconds, the sight of the demon's death hung in the air... Before the wind and more sakura petals began to circle around the room, easily wiping away the flames and damage that the battle had brought into the room, along with clearing out the remains of the demons that had fought against them, leaving nothing but a collection of flowers in its wake.

Most importantly, before Mitsu lied a rather unique black flower with a red middle, surrounded by various items, such as the broken half of the Onryo's mask, a bladed disk, and most peculiarly, a large arrow strapped to a key, marked by several kanji that marked it as an Exorcism Arrow.

Ako

"Phew... That was rough. Now I know why Onryo are so rare, that sort of malice doesn't come easy" Ako commented as she pushed herself to her feet, holding her side as Spray moved forward to try and help the Goddess. Though, a split second later, Ako snapped her fingers, quickly retrieving the cursed slip from her sleeve, glancing at it before nodding, "Alright, that's the second down. Now all that's left is about one more and I should be able to open up the barrier that protects Him."

"Treat the others first. I am a being of faith, not matter." She looked at the black flower blooming before her. "Faith alone. . ." she murmured, moving to pick up the disc. Mitsurugi could feel the pain and anger that it represented as clearly as if she were experiencing it herself. She stood, staring at it until her eyes drifted past to the other items. There she remained for a few quiet moments, before recoiling as if the disc had bit her.

The metallic record clattered to the ground. Mitsurugi turned stiffly, toward the lift. "Divide these treasures as you will. I will be outside." Then she walked away, with no intention of stopping.

"Wh-Hey, wait!"

Spray had looked over the others - while they were banged up, they weren't in nearly as bad shape as the swordswoman. Grabbing his medical supplies, he followed her outside - and once they were both outside the building, Spray moved to her side.

"Look,I don't know what the matter with you is, but you're still injured, being of faith or not. I'm here to help you, so let me!"

Mitsurugi turned, the slight glow in her eyes visible in the dreary weather. "The injuries I have suffered will heal. The true wounds are beyond your power, unless you suddenly find yourself possessed of the will and charisma to bring followers to me once again." Her gaze fell and shifted away once more, staring out at the space before the inn. She appreciated his concern, she really did, but she wasn't lying. Spray could bind her wounds, and it would ease her pain and recovery, but the rents in her body were far from her largest concern. "Tell me, Maxwell Schiff. If you are in a burning house, do you attempt to extinguish the blaze from within? Or do you attempt to flee and save as many as you can before it collapses?"

Spray sighed at the the swordswoman's - goddess', he supposed - response. He was hardly the kind who could draw people in, or... heal whatever suffering she was going through. What really disturbed him, however, was the metaphor she used.

"I... Hold on. You make it sound as though you're a danger to the rest of the team - and from what I've seen, you're anything but. Hell, if it wasn't for you I'd probably have been one of the people who got sliced to pieces."

His voice quavered, uncertain if this was at all what the goddess wanted to be hearing, but he stood his ground. It wouldn't do any good to show fear.

Mitsurugi heaved her own sigh. This was all agonizing to contemplate. The others were convinced it was a ploy, but she could feel something chipping away at her. "You did not witness the destruction of the shrine. A shrine of Amaterasu-Ōmikami, foremost among the gods, and I sundered it while trying to ward off the same. And. . . the savagery." She didn't know what had seized her earlier; Lexiel's magic had stirred something, and she had slaughtered without mercy. Not to mention what had just occurred. That many wasted cuts on a defeated foe, for what end? The tale of an onryo was a tragedy, the dispatching of one a mercy. "The walls are falling inward, Maxwell Schiff. That which had once warded you could become your ruination. I had thought I had escaped this fate by arriving here, but the youkai already recognize me as one of their own." She shook her head. "And I do not know if I can extinguish the blaze."

Spray just shook his head and grumbled, unable to hold back how frustrated he was at the situation. This was not at all what he had signed on for. It was one thing to try to comfort a stranger, but another entirely to try to tackle a problem like the one the goddess had described. The rookie mercenary looked around, idly hoping someone could help him do... whatever would help resolve this situation.

"I... So what are we supposed to do? Just keep an eye on you if you turn hostile or something?"

"I do not know." Mitsurugi closed her eyes. "End me if I slip further, or find some kind of purification ritual sufficient to cleanse a spirit of my stature." She shook her head. What a useless goddess she was, incapable of answering a single question for one of her charges. A guardian spirit who threatened more harm to them than anything the foes they had faced thus far could do. "This is not meant to be a problem foisted upon you." Her eyes opened, narrowed with a quiet anger. "This is not how the natural order should be. Each exists to perform their own duty; humanity provides prayer, devotion, and proselytism, while the gods vie with the magical and the other divines. Yet we were cast aside, and now it comes to this for me. . ." The muscles in her jaw visibly tensed, and it seemed that the glow in her eyes flared slightly - before dying entirely, alongside her posture drooping.

"I apologize, Maxwell Schiff. I have spoken too much. Act as you will, I will not tread upon your desires nor saddle you with my own duties."

Ako

Watching both the goddess and Spray leave and head down the elevator, Ako could only feebly raise a hand, only to stop and lower it with a sigh. The personal matters of the gods were not hers, and thought she wanted to help, she knew it wasn't her place to do so. And so, turning her gaze back to the room at large, thankful for the lack of damage actually caused, Ako zeroed in on the assorted loot, taking in both the various demonic items and...

"Wait... Is that and exorcism arrow?" she asked aloud, taking a few steps forward in order to reach the arrow in question and pick it up, "Huh, it is. And a key too. Why would..." she began trailing off as she looked back at the lift, then at the arrow again, "Hm... I'll be right back. There's a little trail next to the hot springs here that leads to a secluded bamboo forest. I have a feeling that's where this thing goes to" Ako stated to the group, lifting the arrow in question before moving towards the lift.

Spicy HG frowned as Mitsurugi left.  She felt like she of all people ought to be able to help her, but the shear weight of sorrow on her shoulders left Spicy HG with no real place to start.

She stepped over to the still-smoking essence of the demon they had dispatched and pulled it up for safe keeping.  Surely she could manage to do something with it later.  She also grabbed anything else anyone was disinterested in taking for themselves before turning back towards the lift and following Ako.

"Mind come along?  I'm interested to see what parts of the inn there are that I haven't had to set on fire."
