Sorry to interrupt your discussions and all, but as someone who wants to expand into the fighting genre and who has never played any iteration of Smash before, what advice would you guys recommend for a base level newbie like me? I'm planning on getting the game (3DS Version, cause I'm a pleb who doesn't use consoles over PC) over XMas, and I've watched several tutorials as well as numerous tournament matchups so far. Outside of things like the tier list, what things should I focus on or learn when I start the game and begin experimenting with characters?

first major lesson is to not use smash attacks all the time. Basic A button combos and tilts do great damage too and can lead into combos that will net you much more damage than that smash. Plus, you'll get punish pretty hard for spamming smash attacks.

Definitely sit there and do 3 stock matches against cpu's at the beginning. Start with the characters you like the most, then start going through the roster. Then go back and play around with the characters that actually seemed to fit your style the most. Polish them up a bit, then try out the others. Even if you aren't good with them, getting to know their capabilities better will really help you figure out how to fight them with your mains.

And play against people. Many times you won't know how good a character can be until they stomp you with moves and combos you didn't expect.

[22:24:57] +Abbey Street: Smash Bros. News: An in-game alert has alerted us to a patch coming next month.

What can we expect this time around? Puff buffs? Top tier nerfs? Or just glitch fixes? Discuss.

I'm personally hoping for buffs to Puff and Shulk and maybe Game and Watch. Nerfs I want to see are limited tbh. Maybe nerf like... one or two moves on certain top tiers, but not everything.

no nerfs are needed, might see some buffs but im expecting just bug fixes

theres also the chance that it could be new characters, we might hear about the switch port for sm4sh and the rumored announcements for a couple new characters incoming before the patch

I can see Mario getting needed.  He is brain dead easy to use and everywhere.  Dominating large scale tournaments, low scale tournaments, and is everywhere at my local scene.

If I ever want a character get nerfed, it would be bayonetta. Despite the combo game nerf she got, she has actually some busted moves still and she is developing to be the best character imo. Also she doesn't have any losing MU expection of diddy(but it can be told as even).

But imo I would rather get buffs on the low/mid characters. And buffed in a right way as they won't be obnoxious and janky.

I need help fighting Marth. Mains are R.O.B., Fox, Corrin, and Dark Pit/Pit. Any advice?

spam your projectiles and keep your distance. Marth has to come to you to deal damage. Practice against bots or someone who plays him to get a better feel for his attack distance. If you can predict a roll towards you, down smash is a pretty good punish as rob. Perhaps tilt his side smash up to catch him on aerial approaches. As Corrin, you can roll or step back and side smash for range on some of his aerial approaches. I wanna say try a short hop side B after he does his aerial attack and slide back to catch him either with the spear as he lands or the side kick vault after corrin's spear hits the stage. As Corrin, you have the ability to change up both the charge time of xer fireball AND the dragon claw bite that comes afterward. Sometimes you fully charge the projectile and not the other way around, then vice versa, or do no charge attacks for both or fully charge both attacks. I've always felt like this was an overlooked ability within Corrin's kit.

Kinda hard to say since I haven't played in ages and only played Corrin and a bit of Rob.

Lately I've struggled with Yoshi VS Samus matchup. Samus' projectile game makes it hard for me to approach, even with egg throws. Any tips?

I don't know if I want to help you because Yoshi, but I'd imagine aerial egg tosses could get you in. Yo'be also go super armor on your double jump, which you can cancel with an aerial, so try simple forcing your way through her projectiles. They're quite slow. As for rolls which she will inevitably do, try and just get a feel for where she'll stop and time your eggs to hit there.

This is mostly coming from someone experienced in the Melee matchup between the two, not sure how it is in this game.

I usually try to put as much pressure as possible, by throwing eggs and making up-tilt combos to aerial follow ups.

I think Yoshi has a decent match up vs Samus.

Also neutral air is really good to interrupt combos and forward air usually destroy weaker projectiles.
