Actually in reborn they can. Since ame made it so that HA pokemon can be caught in the wild she also changed it to were the ability capsules can make your pokemon have it's HA and like Aurorain said, it will cycle through its listed ability's.

Imagine Amaria was the first Gym leader in reborn with a mega poke. She could have mega gyarados, mega swampert, or mega slow- wait scratch that last one.

I've abused field effects since the psychic gym (cant remember his name) for the dark gym i spammed flash, for the fighting gym vs samson the -speed priority of the move fly did him in, for the fire gym i spammed surf to drastically drop her Pokemon accuracy, and for terra i used icy wind against her garchomp till i crit it.

I agree Charlotte was easy (surf op in her battle field) The only was i was able to beat Terra was because both my shiftry and greninja both could learn icy wind (also my greninja had protean was a bonus). -
My suggestion is getting a pokemon that can use moves like thunder wave, stun spore, or spore. Wait till it uses hyper beam that knocks out one of your pokemon, switch in the pokemon that can paralyze/put it to sleep then switch it in for a pokemon that can take care of it.

You can also try and get Pokemon like Noibat or Poochyena for some more variety.

My suggestion is getting a different flying type like a swoobat because it is both flying and psychic type so it will resist fighting move really well. The way i defeated her was by using a shiftry with hurricane and battling in the rain so the move hit for sure.

My favorite moments in the Lp has to be when he fought the pulse avalugg and when he fought terra. -
I would suggest getting a Pokemon like noibat or woobat for the Grass gym. There Flying typing helps. They're is also some poison type Pokemon like koffing and trubbish you can use as well.
