Code Geass and Koutetsujo no Kabaneri roughly fit that criterion I suppose, I'm not aware of it being a big anime genre

The first follows a banished prince's extensive and convoluted coup d'état of a mega-empire in an alternate history of the Earth. Lots of mechs, politics, insurrection, etc.

The second follows a steam-engineer turned half-zombie royal guardian, more emphasis on epic fights than military structure though because any time you see civilization in that show you can guarantee that shit will be gone in a hot minute

He never really goes out of that stage, but you grow used to him. He's still 100x better than Rolo in Season 2. Hang in there!

When you say military anime, do you want pure warfare or can it be like warring kingdoms battling through games? If the second is okay, then No Game No Life and Mondaiji Tachi... (Troubled Children are coming) are good recommendations.

Hmm, No Game No Life has indeed been given some upvotes by several members around here. Guess I'll try it, thanks!

Edit: First episode is somewhat like watching Kaiji. But the protagonists are pretentious neets.

And the protagonist attitude seems to take a complete 180 in ep 2.

Once upon a time I started Code Geass and immediately hated Lelouche the douche. After a couple of episodes, I gave up on it.

Without saying too much, you're totally supposed to hate him. If that helps.

Active Raid isn't exactly military but I keep thinking of it trying to come up with other things so maybe look at that.

e: disclaimer: I actually didn't finish that series

Hmm, what makes say think so? Lelouch is portrayed as a very sympathetic and heroic figure, not as someone you're supposed to hate early on.

Well, that's why I said "without saying too much" but,

his end goal was to direct all of the world's hatred unto himself and then having the (apparent) leader of the black knights kill him, giving everyone the opportunity to focus on more important things and ending all war. It's maybe not the case so early on, fair enough, but eventually his goal is simply to be hated.

I think the confusion is about who's intending the protagonist to be hated and why

The studio wants the viewer to like Lelouch by revealing his more sympathetic side and his reasons for living. Lelouch as a character eventually has the motive to make the entire world hate him, but even in this you come to support him.

A protagonist the studio wanted the viewer to hate would probably be Light Yagami from Death Note. But even then this was a specifically crafted hatred that mirrored the distaste you feel for an antagonist (part of the reason Light is an excellent actual antihero).

Finally, there's what Maelstrom is talking about, which is disliking a protagonist based on their personality and attitude. In my opinion the best character I can correlate this with is Star the Kid, which combined with the art style led me to drop Soul Eater like five episodes in. Same thing with that fat weird-voiced nerd from Stein's Gate

Generally  not a good idea to purposely write your protagonists to be annoying if you want an audience past episode 5

1: If you droppedarrow-10x10.png Steins Gate because of Daru within five episodes, you dropped it way, way too early. SG is largely set up for 12 episodes, cockslaps you on the thirteenth then leaves you with your jaw hanging in the breeze for what's left. Give that another go, Daru is an ancillary character.

2: Lelouche is a fuccboi but he pulls off some cool shit. There's a decent cast to make up for him if he isn't appealing as a character, main reason to watch is to see if the show can wow you one more time.

Steins;Gate

Kakegurui

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

Ao no Exorcist

Black Butler

No Game No Life ( r.i.p this anime, it'll never gonna have a chance to get S2 T_T )

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann ( don't question the logic, just follow the flow XD )

Re:Zero

and the last one is Re:Creators

But i also know that everyone have different tastes of something. So feel free to check any anime in this list's summary at MAL and see if any anime on this list caught your attention ;)
