Pokemon Retyping

Recommended Posts

It is rare when gamefreak will retype species that have already been around for a few generations. In fact, they have only done it twice, and only in lieu of adding new types. Still, I can't help but feel there are more than a few missed typing opportunities. Here we can discuss these and their competitive and even their aesthetic benefits.

Here is the list that I have off of the top of my head:

BLASTOISE

Oh, sad, forlorn Blastoise. When Gen 2 brought us the Steel type, a certain magnet Pokemon was given the blessing of the first type change, while Blastoise was left feeling kind of awkward. I mean, LOOK at it. With its metallic cannons and certainly a rigid shell, can you imagine it is made up of anything except steel? Sadly, the typing would have made it a competitive beast long before the dawn of Mega evolutions. Which, incidentally, STILL neglected to give him a metallic dip. Sigh.

PRIMAPE

I don't have as much to rant about here, but it always struck me as if it could pull off being a Fighting/Dark type. Sadly, this does not seem to have been considered. Moving on.

FERALIGATR

Why, oh why is this NOT a Water/Dark type? Then again, I suppose they wanted to just stick to monotyping that group of starters. Still, a sad excuse to not give the Big Jaws Pokemon a STAB Crunch.

FLYGON

I have always felt, aesthetically, that this should be Bug/Dragon. Then again, its current typing offers more advantages, and it would lose the Sandstorm immunity. So this one is debatable.

MILOTIC

I don't know where his mega is, but it had darn well make up for the serious lack of Fairy typing.

MISMAGIUS

One of my favorite Pokemon, and I have to say... WHAT were you thinking, Gamefreak??? This one should be Ghost/Fairy! It is the "Magical" Pokemon, after all! Plus that typing would expand its competitive utility and STAB coverage by so much. I cannot express well enough my vast disappointment.

ABOUT HALF OF GEN FIVE

Gen 5 irritated me more than any other with its typing choices. So many missed opportunities, so many that just feel aesthetically awkward. And, of course, my chiefest complaint is with the starters. AHEM.

Are you all ready for this?

SERPERIOR: Should be part Dragon.

EMBOAR: This made a lot of people mad besides myself. Because reasons. This should be Fire/Ground.

SAMUROTT: Let's see... has armor and swords made from shells, draws a lot of inspiration from samurais, has a code of honor akin to warriors... yup, this is pure Water!!! ....No. This deserves to be Water AND Fighting type. Enough said.

AUDINO: Not being a Fairy, I can live with. But still, it feels a little off.

COFAGRIGUS: Woulda made a neat Ghost/Steel, especially with all of the Pokedex entries detailing its GOLD and METAL body.

GOTHITELLE: Should be Psychic/Dark. I mean, just look at it! That would feel so right! Plus, it learns a TON of Dark type attacks naturally! Plus that typing would have been such a boon. What more can I say?

GARBODOR: One that I am most angry about, more than any of the above. If I could only choose to retype one, it would be him. He deserves to be our first Poison/Steel type, as he IS a trash heap, with obvious metal pieces making up his body. The typing would be great defensively, especially if they gave him 10 or 20 more base Def.

There are honestly a few others from this gen, but they are mainly minor gripes.

Moving on...

From Gen 6, I feel they did an almost perfect job with typing. I only have a few small nitpicks...

AROMATISSE: Hmm... uses strong chemical gases and has a mask reminiscent of plague doctors. Yup, this should be a Fairy/Poison type. Would be pretty neat defensively and offensively.

HELIOPTILE and HELIOLISK: Imagine the implications if these guys truly lived up to the sun-powered gimmick and were Fire/Electric?? With Dry Skin, it would have been immune to water and a bigger beast in the sun with Solar Power. Actually, it would be able to dominate three of the four weather types this way. Its Base Stats would have stopped it from being too OP with that typing, which I feel is perfect.

XERNEAS: Fairy and Grass would have given this whole trio some dual typing, and it would have evened out the playing field between Xerneas and Yveltal. Plus, its design and mythos draws a lot of inspiration from the Norse myth of the World Tree, which would befit the typing even more.

(-o-) (-o-) (-o-) (-o-) (-o-) (-o-)

Well, that is all I have for now. If anyone out there has anything to say add, I would be happy to hear it. :)

I definitely agree with most of these. Milotic is the one that confuses me the most: not only does most of its pokedex entries scream fairy type, but Gamefreak had a big opportunity to redo the Hoenn region and make changes, yet they still glanced over a pretty popular pokemon.

They keep redoing typings when they could be more ambitious and open up more opportunities for players by introducing unique type combinations. Oh well . . .

- Snubbull being a Normal Type or even a Fairy ok, but Granbull? This thing is a Dark Type! Normal was ok, too I guess but Fairy? Really?

- With blissey it's the opposite. This thing is destined to be a Fairy! Look at it! It has this "I'm a Fairy-Princess"-thing going on with the dress and being all pink,
so why not fulfilling its wish?

- Crygonial is a ghost! It is a Face on some Ice and it's flying around! Should totally be Ice/Ghost.

- Accelgor has the looks of a ninja, the speed of a ninja, the attacks of a ninja!!... but is a Bug. Bug/Dark !

- I get Florges being a gardener doesn't make it a Grass type but this thing fused with the flower it was carrying around while evolving so please make it Fairy/Grass!

- Malamar. That's the one I have the biggest problem with. I somehow get this thing being a psychic type, because there're these squids and they use lights to hypnotise their prey (guess hypnotising became a psychic thing in pokemon..), but I do not get the Dark type. Just because this thing is named Dark-Squid in japanese (actually it's Squid-Dark but I never heard of squiddy-darkness before.) doesn't make it a Dark type! It is even in the water egg groups! <~< (at least give it sucker punch!)

- imo Goodra is a Muk in Dragon form so make it Dragon/Poison! I know they have Dragalge as a Poison-Dragon but Dragalge I don't see Dragalge being a Poison type. This thing it's based on is even named "LEAFY seadragon"! totally grass/dragon.. but since it's living underwater just make it water dragon.. guess there are a lot of options for this one..

Yeah there were a lot of missed oportunities. Though I notice a lot of these retyping ideas are what was put in the Blaze Black/Volt White romhacks. Yeah it isn't the same as it being in the legit game but still.

I think the Petilil/Lilligant line is a good contender for a grass/fairy retyping, I mean it's moveset is in desperate need of some coverage moves. Spritzee is a major missed opportunity, type and design-wise, since it could have been a really neat fairy/flying type if they had made its evolution more bird-like rather than a vegas dancing girl. Hopefully they fill in some of those typing gaps in gen 7.

Here's some pokes I feel can do with a dual type, do not question why Gyarados never became dragon...

Ninetales: I've been wondering for years why this one never became fire/psychic. Yes we have delphox, which is another fox and yet it gained the psychic typing, but not the original fox? With a bunch of psychic moves under its belt you'd assume it can be psychic, but no.

Golduck: Another gen 1 classic that needs psychic type. I know psychic was OP in gen 1 but not anymore so it would make sense with its large psychic movepool.

Klinklang: I really hate this guy, but I guess it should be electric (so it dies quicker to Earthquake haw haw haw). Not really, but it learns so many electric moves and it looks like those gears operation on electricity, nope, pure steel. Doesn't help the fact that its incredibly shallow physical movepool can really do with an extra stab...?

Arcanine: Another gen 1 that can do with another typing, probably fighting as looks like the majestic justified (ability pun intended)...dog. That will really make its close combat hit hard.

Cresselia: Why did she not gain the fairy typing? They even gave it moonblast this gen, then nope, gamefreak decided to not give it a fairy typing. I guess that would make it even harder to take down than it already is, since psychic/fairy is a fairly tough combination.

Blastoise water/steel

Gyarados water/dragon

Tangela (and Tangrowth) grass/water

Rattata (and Raticate) normal/poison

Ninetales fire/psychic or fire/ghost (both make sense to me)

Psyduck (and Golduck) water/psychic

Arcanine fire/dark

Drowzee (and Hypno) psychic/dark <-- I mean, you know they do...

Starmie water/electric (it helps it so much more with its thunderbolt shenanigans, plus it has only 2 weaknesses)

Electabuzz electric/fighting and Magmar fire/dark (so that both would make a trio of elemental pokemon with Jynx's ice/pyschic)

Pinsir bug/dark <-- I mean, have you seen it? Hell bug

The gen II starters could be grass/fairy, fire/poison (or fire/normal) and water/dark IMO. Still, it is interesting to have a trio of pure type starters.

Ledian bug/fighting (and change its stats! make it useful!)

Bellossom grass/fairy

Politoed water/psychic (if it's gonna be the king of Polis, at least have a type that can hit your water/fighting subjects super effectively)

Sunflora grass/fire (doesn't look much like it but it's the SUNflower pokemon)

Misdreavus (and Mismagius) ghost/fairy (I would have said ghost/psychic before gen VI, but ghost/fairy is better typing)

Pineco bug/grass

Snubbull (and Granbull) dark/fairy

Ursaring normal/fighting, Beartic ice/fighting and Pangoro dark/fighting (well he already is lol). Trio of fighting bears!!

Remoraid looks water/steel to me (is a gun) and Octillery looks water/fire (red, and is a cannon)

Grovyle grass/fighting (don't care about Blaziken lol) <-- I mean, is a bug-eating reptile, that is weak to bug. The fighting helps it with that, and makes it even more weak to its real life predator, birds.

Skitty (and Delcatty) normal/fairy

Volbeat and Illumise bug/electric

Gulpin (and Swalot) poison/psychic

Deoxys poison/psychic as well

Milotic water/fairy

Shuppet (and Banette) ghost/normal

Glalie ice/dark

Huntail water/dark

Gorebyss water/fairy

Luxray electric/dark

Vespiquen bug/psychic

Cherubi (Cherrim) grass/psychic

Carnivine grass/poison

Electivire electric/fighting and Magmortar fire/dark

Yanmega bug/dragon

Darkrai dark/ghost

Cresselia psychic/fairy

Victini fire/fairy and celebi grass/fairy.

Serperior grass/dragon, Shamurott water/fighting and Emboar fire/dark or fire/ground.

Petillil (and Lilligant) grass/fairy

Darmanitan fire/fighting

Maractus grass/ground or grass/fire (or even the common grass/poison)

Yamask (and Cofagrigus) ghost/rock

Trubbish (and Garbodor) normal/poison

Gothitelle (her whole family) dark/psychic

Reuniclus (its whole family) psychic/electric (levitate maybe, but mostly because of neurons and stuff)

Karrablast and Accelgor bug/dark

Klink, Klang and Klinklang steel/electric

Haxorus (and family) dragon/fighting

Cryogonal ice/psychic or ice/ghost

Shelmet bug/steel

Mienfoo and Mienshao fighting/fairy

Florges line, grass/fairy

Skiddo and Gogoat grass/rock

Spritzee and Aromatisse fairy/flying or fairy/poison

Clawitzer water/steel

Heliolisk fire/electric

Goodra (and line) dragon/fairy or dragon/poison

Xerneas Ice/Fairy

I don't get this one

Welp, xerneas already destroys Zygarde and Yvetlal with fairy STAB; let it have them both destroyed by ice beam STAB as well :3

That's my only reason to be honest.

You people really hate pure types.

Apart from certain changes that I'd like, most retypings seem unnecessary in my opinion. If I were to provide a list of possible changes, including possible future megas for those pokemon that change their typing, I'd go this way.

Feraligatr

Soon this guy gets a mega. The obvious typing is water/dark, even if we already have 3 physical water/dark pokemon already, two of them with megas. However, another type I'd consider is Dragon. It's going to be OP, but it fits the style. This change would be only if it received a mega evolution, not the base form

Florges

As many of you do, when I look at this one I immediately think of grass type. Based on its design, it should be one. Yes that would give it a X4 weakness to poison and dump it down a few tiers, but honestly I don't care. If your pokemon looks like a plant or has a flower IN IT, it is a grass type, at least partially. Fairy/Grass for this one, and I think many of you agree with me

Glalie

This one could easily be part dark type, at least in its mega. A big ball of frost with two menacing eyes, a huge jaw that can devour you and a beard styled like the one Leonidas had in the movie 300, gives me a darker impression. Not a necessary change because I can see it being just Ice, but it could totally be there.

Victini

Pure fire. It definitely has the appearance of a fire type but I cannot see where psychic is. I hope the counter-argument will not be that it has a huge V-shaped so it must have brains inside it. I can go with fairy as a sub-type because it is supposed to be a spirit that symbolizes victory, but this is also by a far chance. Even if you look at the movepool (you shouldn't: first comes the design of the pokemon and then everything else) it can learn 1 physical and 1 special psychic move.

Luxray

As Jerry already suggested, this pokemon deserves to be Electric/Dark. Look at its design, movepool, even the abilities it has. Upon first view, dark comes first to mind and THEN electric. They have room to fix this, perhaps by giving it a mega that changes the type (and boosts the stats so it leaves the PU hell)

Masquerain (wtf with that name)

Bring it back to its roots with Water/Bug typing. I cannot simply see where Flying comes from. This is a bug (established) that is often found in fountains and stagnant waters. Usually bugs fly a bit around to get where they need to, but does that mean that everything that has little wings suddenly becomes a flying type? Mask.. Masqur... that thing was actually a droplet in its previous evolution, and now it's a droplet with bug wings to resemble its eyes. This change should have been made just before Gen3 was to be released. If not then, Gen4. Not today, after all those years and pokemon with more fitting typings than ever.

Octillery

Alright, this will suprize most of you, but the way I see things, Octillery should be Water/Fire type. Ignoring the fact that its evolution makes absolutely no sense, it is supposed to be an octapus with a burning core inside of it. It wanted to change from a measly water type to something completely different and it kinda did. However the typing cannot remain the same. If nothing else, its movepool includes Flamethrower and Fire Blast, among others. With a little imagination one can picture an animal whose tentacles can double as cannons or tubes from which some dangerous fluid (or plasma in this case) is going to be emitted and combusted when reaching the outer zone of its body. Again, solved by a mega evolution. Too many megas here, but type changes do not happen often, so the mega scenario is the more possible way of implementing them.

Giratina should have been Ghost/Dark. Do i even need to explain why Dark and not Dragon?

Bisharp always looked like Steel/Fighting to me but Steel/Dark makes sense too i guess...

I understand why you say Dark/Ghost

It's a basilisk, banished to the other realm BY GOD...but bruh

Dragon trio :P

Oh wow, I got so many replies so soon @__@

Thank you for the awesome feedback~

I saw no mention of Electivire. I feel like Electivire should be Electrci/Fighting to help explain why it's a physical attacker and to give it STAB on Cross Chop.

Aggh, I can't believe I forgot that one! Yes, I totally agree, although it makes me think.... if that happened, then Magmar would probably be deserving of some second typing such as Rock... that way, the Magmar/Electabuzz/Jynx trio can stay in step with each other, AND they would form a type triangle similar to the starters: Jynx beats Elec with Psychic, Elec beats Magmar with Fighting, and Maggie beats Jynx with Fire/Rock.

- Snubbull being a Normal Type or even a Fairy ok, but Granbull? This thing is a Dark Type! Normal was ok, too I guess but Fairy? Really?

To be fair-y (aha, I am feeling punny) Snubbul and Granbul have always been titled Fairy Pokemon... but I also don't understand why...

As for Blissey, I guess I am personally okay to let that one slide since they did already give SO many Normal types the Fairy makeover, but I am also inclined to fulfill her wish, too.

Cryogonal=Ghost. YES.

Accelgor definitely should not be overlooked for potential Dark type.

I noticed that a LOT of you mentioned Florges, and you know what? I feel the same way!

With Malamar, I am not as irritated by as you are, mainly because I find it intriguing much more than I hate it. But on one hand, Gothitelle deserves to be Dark/Psychic way more than this thing.

Hmmm... Goodra... yeah, either Dragon/Poison or Dragon/Water.

Tangela (and Tangrowth) grass/water

Rattata (and Raticate) normal/poison

Psyduck (and Golduck) water/psychic

Drowzee (and Hypno) psychic/dark <-- I mean, you know they do...

Starmie water/electric (it helps it so much more with its thunderbolt shenanigans, plus it has only 2 weaknesses)

Milotic water/fairy

Shuppet (and Banette) ghost/normal

Luxray electric/dark

Cresselia psychic/fairy

Victini fire/fairy and celebi grass/fairy.

Darmanitan fire/fighting

Maractus grass/ground or grass/fire (or even the common grass/poison)

Yamask (and Cofagrigus) ghost/rock

Gothitelle (her whole family) dark/psychic

Haxorus (and family) dragon/fighting

Cryogonal ice/psychic or ice/ghost

Mienfoo and Mienshao fighting/fairy

Florges line, grass/fairy

Goodra (and line) dragon/fairy or dragon/poison

Omigosh Zimvader, sooo many @___@

The ones I left in the reply box are the ones that I most strongly agree with.

In particular, Ledian and Politoed... ESPECIALLY Politoed, with all of his Hypnosis shenanigans.

AS for Sunflora, I agree, but to a point; it's stats are just terrible. A long time ago, I designed my own evolution for him which gives him that typing, better stats, and the abilities Drought, Solar Power, and Photosynthesis which would basically be like Ice Body for the sun. I would rather it evolve to look more fiery and get better stats. Hmmm... Or maybe... can anyone say "Sunflorinite"? >:3

Grovyle: I love your point about it being weak to what it eats; I HATE it any time a Pokemon known to eat certain things is "weak" to what it eats. It really grinds my gears. Although, Fighting doesn't fit it imo, buuuut Dragon doesn't fix that aesthetic flaw, while Poison just feels like a cop out. Ohh, what to do?

Banette being Ghost and Normal???? You genius, I wish I could hand you a cookie. That fits so well with it, while also giving immunity over two of its potential weaknesses.

Victini, Cresselia and Mienshao should certainly be part fairy.

Maractus is really boring... I agree that it needs SOME kind of second type, and it could be a sodding Dragon type for all I care, as long as it quits being so fricking boring.

Yamask and Cofagrigus... part Rock? I think that is a fair compromise over Steel so it is unique (since we have Honedge now) and it can get a Sandstorm buff, which works well since it is found in a desert.

You people really hate pure types.

Apart from certain changes that I'd like, most retypings seem unnecessary in my opinion. If I were to provide a list of possible changes, including possible future megas for those pokemon that change their typing, I'd go this way.

Alright, this will suprize most of you, but the way I see things, Octillery should be Water/Fire type. Okay, okay, yeah, maybe we are going all over the place here... and I can see it being a bit overdone if we just go around changing types willy-nilly when most conceivable changes will leave us with more Fairy types than Water types before supper.

Anyways, I love the idea of a Dragon type Feraligatr about 10x more than the Dark type, especially because I also don't want the Dex to be over-saturated by all of the Water/Dark types.

Victini, Luxray and Octillery definitely deserve the change, and I am also baffled by the Masquerain fiasco. "Congrats, now you have intimidate, but now you also have a dual weakness to make that useless."

Octillery I can see being part fire, when I think of myths about Krakens, the giant octopi/squids that breathe fire... and the fact that he gets so many fire moves and various beams.

Out of all of the above, if I could only change 5, it would be:

1: Garbodor. He deserves to have Steel added perhaps more than any PokeJoe wanting to be a Fairy type. I give him top priority.

2: Mismagius for Ghost/Fairy. It would jump up into OU with a vengeance.

3: Gothitelle's family for Psychic/Dark.

4: Octillery: Go for broke and make it part Fire!

5: Victini: I dunno what is up with this being Psychic... it should definitely be Fairy.

Dragon trio :P

Well... they are dragon trio but i think it should be like this:

Palkia: Water/Psychic (This pokemon controls space, you know...... SPACE it should have been psychic type)

Dialga: Steel/Psychic (same as above but with time instead of space)

Giratina: Ghost/Dark (For obvious reasons)

Also

Arceus: ??? (this pokemon created the universe and it's normally a Normal type what the heck were you thinking Gamefreak???? Creating the universe means you get to be unique.)

You can be unique AND be a normal type...

In all honesty tho, I'd preffer if Arceus had protean instead of multitype, or that multitype actually allowed it to strike opponents of any type for at least neutral damage ignoring immunities of any kind. Now THAT would be a godsome ability.

If you look at it that way my 4 level bidoof is unique too.

Also something more revelant to topic

Cresselia:Psychic/Fairy (This thing definetly looks like a Fairy type it even gets moonblast by level up)

Well, if you think it is, it is. In the topic of unique normal types, you can also find:

-Snorlax

-Kecleon

-Zangoose

-Blissey

-Ditto

-Kangashkan

-Porygon

-Eevee

-Smeargle

-Slaking

-Castform

-Regigigas

-Arceus

Note how "unique" is not the same as "powerful"; therefore, your bidoof can be unique, despite it being powerful or not (and even then, there's the "weak pokemon, strong pokemon, that is only the selfish perception of people" thing).

Back on topic tho, I agree with Cresselia being psychic/fairy. If she was psychic/fairy and Darkrai was dark/ghost, Cresselia's main weakness would be darkrai's ghost, while Darkrai's only weakness would be Cresselia's fairy, making them so much of a better duo.

You should know that Darkness prevails.

Darkrai --> Ubers

Cresselia --> UU? RU?

to be fair Darkrai has somewhat unique sweeper abilities thanks to its spaw/speed and dark void but smogon is messed up anyways. Still Cresselia is clearly a Fairy!

imo they should actually retype all (well not ALL but at least some) Normal/Flying Types (not saying I don't appreciate some of them having normal typing):

- Braviary Flying/Fighting

- Chatot Flying

- Staraptor Flying/Dark or Flying/Fighting

- Noctowl Flying/Psychic

- Fearow Flying/Dark

Swellow, Unfeazant and Pidgeot do somehow fit the Normal/Flying type, I guess.
