Yep, a bug that is fixed in 4.1 - which is being released today!

4.1 isn't out yet. The current release is 4.0.1. The final release will be 4.1. The final release will contain this tweak.

For story purposes, I like that I made Connor first. For all other purposes however - I'm aware it's extremely problematic. The most obvious (and probably most sensible) solution would be to add more... useful Pokemon in Episode 1 content. This is exactly what I've done for 4.1.
