You're not alone, trust me. I totally feel you there.
I only have about three irl friends that actually like anime, and even then, they've only watched a bunch of mainstream crap like Naruto, One Piece, Dragon Ball, Bleach, SAO, Fairy Tail, AOT and TG. I don't mean that these are bad, but seriously, they act like complete weaboos and don't really care about other shows (shows that are actually really good and worth praising). Still trying to convince one of them to watch Higurashi, Hunter x Hunter, Fate and Psycho-Pass, tho he's also making me watch Fairy Tail, which I have no interest in >_>. Fate's quality is easily comparable to The Game of Thrones, something most of my friends watch, while Psycho-Pass is the perfect example of how to treat a Police Mystery show the right way, without having a shitty episodic structure or resorting to bad comedy. Hunter x Hunter is, like, the best and most consistent shounen ever to be made (so the exact opposite for Naruto/One Piece/Bleach/Fairy Tail, etc). Higurashi is just... I'm a fucking fanboy for that show, it was the most enjoyable shit to watch to me, ever. Then you've got amazing things like Madoka, Baccano! and Zankyou no Terror, that are just so good and unique that there are practically no comparable "real" TV shows to them. Not to mention that all of these are ten times more violent than most of the crap they watch, which is funny, because one of the main reasons they use to bash on anime is that they treat them as "cartoons for kids".
Other than these three friends I mentioned, most of the others are way too narrow-minded and treat anime as if it were complete shit, when they haven't even tried a decent one (or one at all, tbh). The only justification they give me is something like "lol fuck ur yu-gi-oh cartoons, they're shit, for nerds and for kids" - quoted the exact way it came out of their mouths. Plus, it's not like I'm even trying to make the latter ones watch an anime. As long as it comes up to the conversation, they instantly bash on it like utter retards. These type of reactions really disappoint me, but in the end it's their loss. I'm sure they would've enjoyed most of these shows even more than I did, if they gave them a try. Most of my friends aren't harsh at all when it comes to movies/TV shows, and are easily entertained by crap like shitty comedies that focus on a bunch of overused sex jokes and have nothing but a piss-poorly written story, boring and plain bad episodic police shows and terrible romances like fifty shades of fuck.
also a girl whos a really big friend of mine called anime crap and likes to watch spongebob. i think ive said enough.
