Pokémon Reflection - it's all in my head!

Hey there, it's Cyaloom!

So, I've been wanting to create my own Pokémon fangame for about two years, and Reborn has to be "blamed" for that. In fact, I'd just started playing Reborn at the time, and I used to get lost in Reborn City fairly easily. It was a lot bigger and diverse than any other settlement I'd seen in any Pokémon game. An entire Pokémon game might have been set there without too much trouble, I thought.
At that point, many ideas came up into my mind regarding the story and the setting of the game.
After coming up with many other contrasting ideas, trying to develop them, and playing other fangames like Rejuvenation and Desolation, I've settled on this: a game with Manaphy as a mascot, set mostly in one big city, and that is based on a new concept about what Pokémon really are.

what a mess

Recent or Important Announcements

Well, I am still at the beginning: assembling tilesets, planning the story in detail, adding seasons...

The new concept of Pokémon

A very interesting trait of all Pokémon is to fit inside a small Pokéball, and even be stored inside a Computer.

In the anime there is already a hint about this: Pokémon, in fact, get out of the Pokéball as some kind of "red energy" before turning into the actual Pokémon, and Pokéballs themselves have the inner side covered in mirrors, probably to keep the energy inside.

On the other hand, we have Porygon, a Pokémon created and programmed artificially - which supports the idea that Pokémon inside of a Computer are nothing more than data, like every other file, and can be edited from there.

Research projects about this are still in progress, but imagine the consequences after their completion: even the most new of trainers can catch a random Rattata in the wild and turn it into a top percentage Rattata just by messing with a computer, for example.

Story and setting

Azurine City's fame is increasing, and is now regarded in many places as the Trainers' heaven: a strong and recently revamped League, many research facilities and services for trainers, and an interesting history to back that up. But, in the clothes of a trainer from a faraway region seeking new challenges here, you’ll see that this place is not exactly like you’ve imagined.
The government is being put to the test by some troublemakers, and dissent spreads among the people. But the more you know, the harder it’ll be to choose a side.

Characters

Main characters

Playable Characters, Dave and Lucy: the protagonist is coming from a distant region to challenge the local League. As such, the City offers him or her many services (a new home, a Starter Pokémon, free healing in Pokémon centers) but also wants him or her to stay safe: therefore, given the current situation, there is a specific path that trainers will have to follow.

You're not as free as you think.

Rival, Martin: Martin is another trainer who travelled to get to Azurine City alongside the protagonist, and will be his or her main rival for a while. But at the same time, he'll treat the protagonist with respect and will help him or her during the journey of both of them.

Rival, Lewis: Lewis is yet another trainer that came to Azurine City seeking new challenges. Has a fiery and somewhat impulsive personality. His childhood dream was to become one of the strongest trainers in the world, and that dream is still strong right now.

Government and research

Most of the characters who work for Pokémon research or who govern the city will only appear later in the game and, surprisingly, many of them come from other regions like the protagonists.

However, there are two of them that I need to present now.

Professor, Nathan Weiss: the local Professor, who has been here for less than three years, is a young man who is easily recognizable thanks to his spiky yellow hair. As many other colleagues, he is in charge of giving the Starter Pokémon to any eligible new trainer, but is also responsible for perfectioning Bill's Storage System and for studying how Pokémon transform into Computer Data and viceversa. To remark this, he has a Porygon-Z as his companion.

Laboratory Assistant, Susan: she only arrived recently in Azurine City, and because of this she doesn't have many friends among the people who live there. As such, she spends most of her time helping Nathan and the foreign trainers who arrive in the city, and she's become rather timid and collected, especially when she's alone or with people she doesn't know.

Others

Shannon: being a native of Azurine, this teenager doesn't really agree with this government. Although he is generally an open-minded person and doesn't like conflicts, he won't hesitate to stand up for his hometown and who lives there, like many of his friends.

Objectives and features of the game

Like I said before, I'd like to focus on the plot rather than on additional features. But at the same time, features like seasons, different storylines, and dialogues would rise the replayability of this game - and that is another thing I'd love to have in this game.

Therefore...

Features:

- Quicksave duh

- 14 Gym Leaders and an Elite 4 (making one Specialist for each type)

- All 721 Pokémon available by the end of the game

- Many custom sprites

- Increased Shiny Rate

- At least one custom rearrangement

- Toggleable run (included in Essential 16)

Probable or planned features*:

- 4 additional playable character to choose from

- An entirely customized soundtrack

- Seasons

- Backup Saves

- Additional Weather conditions

- Gen 5-styled, or even customized graphics and tilesets

* = I'm actually still deciding whether to add these features (sooner or later) or not.

Credits

Pokémon Essentials 16: Maruno, Poccil, Flameguru, P-Sign, FL.

Special thanks or dedications: Zumi, Viridescent, Tomas Elliot, and the creators of the aforementioned fangames (Ame, Jan, Caz)

some of them know everything already...

so yeah. that is what I did in these two years :]

Good to see you've finally made a topic about your game, Loom! I'm wishing you the best of luck since I really like the idea you've got going, so I'll definitely be playing it once it comes out.

Looking forward to it! :]

Oohhh this seems interesting! I really like the plot you've got going on.

The government is being put to the test by some troublemakers, and dissent spreads among the people. But the more you know, the harder it’ll be to choose a side.

this in particular got me intrigued! Maybe you get to choose sides. Which is cool.

Good luck! I'd love to see this game come to life. Oh. And just a question. Are you planning on recruiting people to help with this? 'Cause I'd be willing to help out with sprites. Though, I might not be very active. But once November rolls around I'll basically be on the internet 24/7 so ye.

Again, good luck Loom!

Looks neat as an idea, though the lack of screenshots or something to show off aside from the admittedly nice title screen disappoints me slightly. Either way, I wish you a lot of luck on this project. I'll be watching for stuff I guess.

I already stated this in a status, but anyways: my original plan was to do almost everything by myself without bothering other users needlessly - and yet there are people who're willing to help!

Seeing that I have little to no experience in spriting, I accept your offer happily! Thank you very much Aika :)

Thanks! And yes, you're right, most of the material I have is written. But if you want I can show off some random sketches I've made at school :P

Oh, and also thanks to everyone else who replied!

Yes! Another fan game ^^ And there are seasons, which is a wonderful feature. I guess the pokemon availability in each area is affected by that. I'm curious how Manaphy could be tied in the plot. This is really sounds good and looking forward for screenies~ Want to see how the characters look too!
