Viridescent's Wandering Art Thread [Art: Drawing/Feedback]

Recommended Posts

In terms of just pure linework, Togekiss is pretty fucking tits. You have improved a ton! I haven't really reflected over it before, but this linework compared to the, say, Noivern back in the days, the difference is staggering. Good job Viridescent! It has a nice flow; the lines and how they go against each other. even your signature looks a lot better...

Aside from the outline on his face of course; compared to the dreamy feel to the rest of him, a thick black line is nagl.

It also doesn't look like Togekiss much at all. Togekiss has a lot of distinctive traits: its flat face, the swirl on its wings, roundness, the markings on its chest. and I see none of those here. Arguably the chest markings. Add to that a tail many times longer than it's actual design. I like that you take liberties; but I wouldn't have immediately identified this as Togekiss if I had not been told so. The ears and the head plume are solid thou

The down on his shoulders and tail plumes look good; but that one feather on its outermost wing is really weird, since there's just one. I don't know what's going on with the structure of the wings either; rather than looking like big feathers, it looks like chunks of down-covered flesh mimicking feathers; the shading at the ends gives the illusion of volume. It stands out even more since clearly, you can draw feathers; the neck one looks great.

Mega Gloomy later i just wanted you to know that im on it

I remember saying quite clearly when I drew noivern that it was a casual sketch, with no effort on lines whatsoever. This is a more concerted drawing, hence the improvement that you doubtless seem to have noticed. So comparing this with noivern isn't the best gauge if my performance capacity, but I take the compliment regardless.

The face has a thicker line because, idk, I wanted it to look like a defined, shirt fur, not the wispy longish fur/feathers on the rest of its body. I agree that I took a lot of liberties with this; the chest markings are there, however. They're just the smallish darker flecks on its torso. I also interpreted the swirl on its wing as a wing covert.

I like how you said 'Gloomy'.

this is so ridiculously overdue. i think it's bloody shame goodra wasn't dragon/poison to begin with: it lives in a fucking swamp, c'mon. Or at least dragon/fairy, look at it, look at goomy.

but before the critique, im just gonna get back to you on some stuff, i've been meaning to do this but i keep forgetting to add anything else when im just looking at the 'mon.

to be honest, i wasn't even looking at noivern or any drawing it particular; it was just the first one that came to mind after i couldn't remember how to spell 'hydreigon'.

Mega Yanmega has compound eyes that wrap around its head like goggles––

out of curiosity, how large it it? because yanmega is already ridiculously monstrous; how deep into of a steven king novel would place this thing?

actually nevermind im not bothering to go further back in this thread, so without further ado:

the colors are gorgeous. i'm frequently on about how you work your magic with ink; today, i clutched my pillow closer to my chest and thought to myself: how the hell does he do that with crayons? Viridescent, i haven't had my nails painted since my little sister did them for me when i was 12, i've turned down several offers from professional nail artists that i've somehow gotten chummy with, but if you offered to paint my nails, i just might take you up on that.

but while the control of the medium might be near perfect, there's stiff you could work on when it comes to application. goo like this should have huge blow-out highlights, like the ones on top of his ear, all over; the current lack of them makes it look like the slime is rigidly solid, like icicles. highlights are also what marks creases in slime, not shadows as hard and black as those are. i feel like a soft body like this should have more subsurface scattering around the edges as well, like the spears has.

there's also something about the colors, beautiful as they are, that doesn't quite complement each other; there's four major values in there, all in different hues, and all spread out over the design, leaving it unfocused, and even hard to look at. they're also very different from the soft pastel hues of the original design, but i understand if your masculinity couldn't suffer through that.

and – this is more personal opinion than anything – i would have liked the spears to not be melting, like this exoskeleton structure sticking out from all the goo.

the tail too... as soon as i see it, logically, i understand how it's supposed to work (and i do like that! like an akita tail ), but the way the slime is overlapping itself doesn't make sense in my muddled little brain. the thickness it's also weird; is it keeping its unborn kids in there?

the face on the side view is fucking terrible. furrysuit design prototype 1.2, complete with side-mouth. burn it. but the top view is satisfying to see! i love turnarounds. i do.

as for the stats, for all the three people on this website that hasn't memorized the stats for all competitive pokémon by heart, could you list the original stats as well in future posts? for reference.

and lastly holy shit @ the amount of pornography i had to waddle though, like artax in a swamp of perversion, to look at references for goodra.

no wait one more thing: on the topic of the late mr. freud's wise learnings. calling someone "weenie" is exactly the kind of thing i feel like he'd have a field day with; do you think he'd interpret it as:

a) you're gay

B) you would like to retract back to your mother's uterus

c) both

Ha, a unique pleasure, as always, 'weenie'. If you prefer, I can always start calling you Ellie or Halloween or ThatGuy#243 or what have you; just say so.

And yes, you're right in that the thing needs a little more specular, like the slime on his 'ear' (it's actually an antenna/tentacle) but there's only so much you can do after the whole thing is done, you know? I would definitely do it were it digital art where you can edit the stroke that has fallen forth, but alas this is not so.

And as for the 'spears' on his back, I did mention that they're tentacles as well, and are retractable like real sea slug extensions and anemone tentacles, which I already stated they're based off. So while I agree that having a rigid thing sticking out of a pile of goo would look nice, that's not biologically accurate, unfortunately. Considering that these tentacles are what afflict the poison, it makes all the more sense that they should be drippy too.

Thanks for the high praise, by the way. It really does mean much to me. And I agree, Goodra should've been Poison or at least Water type to begin with.

And you can, of course, always interpret the slime in his belly to have hardened into a stiff, crusty dried-candlewax-ish form, to substantiate their lack of specular. That'd do well to explain its increased defense. You can explain away the specular on its head-antennae and back-tentackes by stating that they've been freshly protracted from its inner body, and are so still glistening with slime that has yet to harden after substantial contact with dry air.

And yes, its tail is bloody massive; it stores all its venom and fat reserves in there to help tide it through the dry season! An explanation for everything!

(Apology for the stupid cutesy side face, I had to do that to satisfy a certain vested interest , you know I dislike doing such things anyhow.)

And yes, I should include sizes in the Mega descriptions. My bad. Mega Yanmega is huuuge, about 1.7 times its base form's length and nearly twice the wingspan, but it is actually lighter than base form Yanmega, owing to its greater structural aerodynamism and weight reduction for greater flight.

Mega PBJ is twice as tall as regular Goodra and three times heavier at the very least. And yeah, henceforth I'll add the base statistics as well, or give an indication, for those who haven't memorized the Smogon charts.

Uuugh. Why did I do this. What possible reason could I have had. It's not even a question.

Mega Togekiss...

Si vis pacem...para mortem.

YQRQeWu.jpg

It's...ugh. At least it's predominantly white so I don't have to do much colouring...

God, it's nightmarish. And that face! Does that look like the face of mercy to you?

All right, it's an angel. I was sick of its official design as an egg-plane, so this one is more avian and...well, at least it has a more defined shape, than that oblong thing with swirly wings that called itself a Pokemon.

So, I drew some inspiration from seraphim and things like that, with a lot of wings and no legs. Well, this thing has a large pair of angelic-shaped wings with a second pair adjacent to its tail, and two small hands/feet/what-have-you at its breast. I kept the red and blue specks an it's body, but once again they're more definite now. It still keeps the flattish face, but its weird pointy things are more definite ears/horns/etc now, and it still has the trademark red and blue alteration.

Getting down to competitive, I tell you, if you thought Clefable (which has no base stat that exceeds 100) was ugly, then this thing is satanic. Because yep, it has Magic Guard.

Magic Guard! Immunity to status and weather! Immunity to Stealth Rock! And God, it's fat. Togekiss itself is a well rounded Fairy type with a meaty special attack, above average defenses and decent speed. So Mega Togekiss just improves in degree not in kind:

Base form stats: 85/50/95/120/115/80 (ugh)

Mega stats: 85/65/115/140/140/100 (...help me.)

The stat boosts are individually modest and spread across every stat (save HP, of course), but when combined make it a worse demon than fat Mega Latias, with a much better typing and coverage that Latias would kill for. Because, courtesy it's prior existence as a Normal type, it has fantastic elemental coverage: Fire Blast, Aura Sphere (Steel types perish), Air Slash, Ancient Power, Grass Knot, Dazzling Gleam, Tri Attack, Psyshock (bye-bye Poisons), oh, the list goes on! And it has excellent moves like Nasty Plot (oh God why, this thing is EVIL!), Roost (which negates its Rock, Electric and Ice weaknesses), Defog, Baton Pass (EVIL, I tell you!), Encore, Thunder Wave, Tailwind, Toxic, Wish! And because I'm feeling particularly evil today, I'm doing it a service and granting it Moonblast, because why the hell not. Its base form can abuse the SpAtk Drops from Serene Grace too.

The stat increases are nightmarish. 85/115/140 bulk is monstrous, especiallywith an excellent typing that resist Pursuit, made worse by a large base 140 SpAtk (and that's not even accounting for Nasty Plot!) and base 100 Speed, which is great for a fat Pokemon. Why, this thing puts even Mega Gardevoir to shame! Fear it, for it is indeed the worst nightmare.

Not to say it can't be stopped, though. It can't boost its speed in any reliable way (but Tailwind, ugh...), and it is checked or revenged by certain Pokémon depending on its spread. Offensive spreads are stoppable or revengeable by things like Gengar, Mega Metagross, offensive Mega Scizor, and also by things that can take a non-boosted hit and strike back very hard, like Dragalge or Mega Goodra (hi.) Defensive spreads that do not carry Flamethrower or Aura Sphere are again stopped by Fat Mega Scizor, Ferrothorn, Jirachi (another evil thing) and many steel types, as well as Poison types like Mega Goodra (hi) for example, as also other fat fairies, SpDef Heatran and Talonflame, and so on. Depending on its moves, it will always have trouble with some mons. But I'll eat my audit reports if this thing is allowed in OU for any length of time. Set up is too easy, spreading status is too easy, its coverage is too wide, and it is simply too fat.

Ubers, better prepare yourself.

Why, are you under the impression that i don't like to be associated with phallic imagery?

i missed that it was supposed to be tentacles. My bad. But Viridescent, why would you feed the masses of people that apparently already think Goodra's succulent flesh and luscious tail has some wanton quality? I certainly didn't need to hear phrases like "freshly protracted" "back tentacles" "glistering with slime" in relation to any Pokémon.

I'm going to have nightmares about Mega Yanmega. In any case, back to the subject on hand, the man of the hour, the good, the bad and the let's-get-ugly:

Ubi mors ibi spes, Viridescent. But even I can tell that this thing will suck to bring down. It might even function as a defender against the mega naga; the Krishna to Rayquaza's Kaliya, would the next generation bring enough overpowered mons to bring it back to the mortal realm of ubers.

For some reason I get the impression it's designed to partner with Magnezone; whatever I got such an outlandish idea from beats me.

Ubers has always irked me; it's supposed to be übers, it's pronounced completely different! Shape it up, Pokémon metagame. holy shit @ dat coverage. Personally i think its biggest weakness will be its punchable face; it would vex me greatly to lose to something looking that self-righteous smug.

But you design too small. This would even look like an official design, it it wasn't for the clutter. Here's look at some of the blotchiest current Pokémon designs:

florges.gifaerodactyl-mega.giftyrantrum.giftalonflame.gif

post edited because i forgot to include these

I'm just not going to stop telling you this, so you might as well soak it in, haha. It's like it's a mélange between your own, detailed style and the simplicity of the official art; a hodgepodge that flatters neither. The ruffle of his feather boa as well; too much too small.

I can't for my life trick my head into thinking the red wing is supposed to be slightly behind him; the shading makes it look like the lighter parts are close to me. And the middle crest should be less visible behind his head.

Nevertheless – i actually like this design overall. The idea behind it is plausible for a Mega Togekiss, and i like the split colors of the wings, the idea of a boa-cape, how its ears evolved, legs evolved into "flippers". The front legs strikes me as unneccessary, design wise, but overall it's solid.

Obligatory 'yaay turnaround' to prevent you from stop doing them.

I really like the angelic design (although it looks more like a Phoenix to me) of M-Togekiss. Also you gave it Magic Guard you savage.

Why, thanks! And yes, Hallellioweenie, thing is supposed to look more smugly self-satisfied than Serperior. Please, Meteor Mash it to the face, I can't stand that "Oh dear me, what has the Purugly dragged in today?" expression.

And don't blame me for what the deviants think of goodra. It's slime, yes, the tentacles do retract and protract, yes, and they do glisten because they're slimy, yes. It's a friggin pile of goo, whatd'you expect?

And oh yes, dimensions for Mega Togekiss; it's about 5'11" (a foot taller than its base form) and it more than doubles in weight, hitting 88 kg, from its previous 38. (Coincidentally, that height and weight is the same as mine!)

And thanks, Caz. And yea, I figured that there are so many Megas with boring old Magic Bounce, but not a single one with Magic Guard. What better to have it that a guardian angel? Only, I went overboard and made it an angel of death...

I'm glad the great BMIC has finally graced my humble abode. And no, I struggle to find 24 hours in a day, and my college and accountancy course resume in the next five days, so I have even less free time than I do now. I won't be able to take requests any time soon, and even if I do why should they be free, hm?

ALL RIGHT, enter Mega Excadrill!

c5Pnddq.jpg

It's not according to the original design, but then, I never do stick to the original. You could say that I'm a...Mold Breaker!

So, straight up, this thing is NOT for OU, it's for Ubers. Yea. Because, you see, it gets Arena Trap!

Makes sense, right? Why should a dumb thing like duggy get it while a real mole doesn't? So MegaDrill here can do some serious trapping. And boy, won't it put those massive drills to use! This thing is bulkier, naturally faster to compensate for the loss of Sand Rush, and has HUGE attack, because it is built for one significant purpose: trapping and eliminating Ubers Titans, in particular that plague of all overcentralising plagues, Primal Groudon!

Here be the stats:

Base form: 110/135/60/50/65/88 =508

MEGA form: 110/165/90/50/85/108 =608

Absolutely terrifying, isn't it? It gets a noticeable increase in bulk (110/90/85 is Garchomp-level fatness) and it can use it to take a few resisted knocks like Ekiller's Extreme Speed, a stray Moonblast or so, and of course, Rock moves are eaten well. This is complemented by a good rise in speed from a subpar 88 (lower than the base 90 mark in Ubers, thus forcing it to rely on sand) to a great 108, which outspeeds a large chunk of the fat metagame. The phenomenal rise in attack, along with its potential access to Swords Dance, makes it terrifying in battle.

The idea behind it is to be versatile. It can very well make use of Tyranitar to do its sand clean-up job pre-mega, and Mega evolve to trap and kill off the fatter, slower Titans to have the way for, oh, I don't know, an Ekiller or a Mewtwo or something to sweep. It still keeps its Sand Rush speed on the turn it Mega Evolves, so it can nicely checkmate something faster on that turn if sand is up, like a Mega Gengar or a troublesome Mewtwo, and kill it off. The added bulk and trapping power also makes it viable to run moves like Rapid Spin and even Stealth Rock or Toxic.

However, it's not as broken as mega Gengar, because it is not mad fast, and it can't trap things that are off the ground. It also has rather okay bulk by Ubers standards, really, and no recovery either, so it's not going to take hits that well. And because it can't hold an item, its power is not very different from regular LO Drill's. Setting up an SD is also easier said that done.

As for the drawing itself, I took an Excadrill and combined it with an earth-moving equipment, really. the body is much bulkier, with the head-part becoming a massive drill that bites through the earth. Its arms become hugely muscled, like Mega Heracross's, and its claws transform into divisible, semi-retractable drill parts, which can fuse together and rotate like its head-drill, and can also operate independently to act like clawed fingers to slash and hold things, as illustrated. I took a few liberties, of course, like the steel rat-like tail and the red patterns on its body transforming into stripes of some kind that glow when MegaDrill is agitated, and I also added in a fair bit of blood-red jewels encrusted into the seams of its drills. The elbows are additionally strengthened by a metal piledriver, rather like on jackhammers, so they can thrust at the ground (or at an enemy!) with shattering force.

Anyway, there it is. Quite an unfriendly thing to face, really. Watch your step; it could be under you, for all you know!

a pokémon weak to both ground and and fire is supposed to counter primal groudon? im not questioning it 'cause you know your shit but you gotta back that up somehow, hit me with some stats, 'cause it's no fucking way even a super effective earthquake k.o 160 def. (right?) gimme cloud nine pokémon, ubers

but anyway. i dislike looking at pointy things for some reason, so this will be sorta short. i like the pattern of small rocks over him, and i like the stripes, but i feel like it should be one or another, and nowhere do i see any "blood-red".

his face isn't given enough attention either, which gives him a lack of focus; i don't know where I'm supposed to look. The texture of his skin is also bothering me – or rather, the lack of texture on his skin. is it supposed to be leather-y? short hairs? art critics will be asking this question for decades

and the shading of the stripes on top of him isn't consistent with the brown. but aside from that, there's stuff here that i just adore – concepts, mostly. The larger rocks surrounding his drills. the shafts on his hands, gruesomely penetrating from the back, his rat tail.

and the shading of his drills is fucking stunning. congrats, you have mastered steel in one more medium. soon you will become one with it.

til: what a 'piledriver' is.

OHO, So Halloween doesn't like pointy stuff. Time to include sharp things in all my future works! kappa

As for the idea of him trapping and removing PDon, bear in mind that a trapper is not necessarily a counter. This thing is never gonna switch in on a Pdon's move, unless you have balls of steel and predict the stone edge or TWave. No, it is meant to be brought in, like Mega Gengar is, on a sack or via U-Turn, and then proceed to trap the Groudon. And 160 Def is a pain, yes, so it'll only do about 60-70% max with an Adamant EQ when in boosted. That's the point (hehe). It's not so easy to use to the point where it's dumb and unfun; among the many things it CAN do is trap PDon and eliminate it, after it has been weakened and in due course of the game. The lava lizard is too damn fat to be OHKOed by a physical attack without boosts, and without an item.

Anyways, as for the lack of blood red, that must be my red-green colourblindness in play. Sorry :/

As for the face and skin, I might concede that the face is somewhat secondary in light of all the other stuff going on, but I don't see how it could be otherwise with this concept. You can imagine the skin to be whatever you like (I like the idea of fur, because moles do have short fur.)

The top stripes are a minor thing, shush, don't talk about 'em.

Thanks very much for the steel compliment though. Such unconditional praise from you is praise indeed. But I take it with self-satisfied smugness, because OFC I'M THE STEEL LORD, koie shak?

OHO, So Halloween doesn't like pointy stuff. Time to include sharp things in all my future works!

Right. I don't have much to say, except that I myself think I've put in more effort than usual in this one.

Needs no introduction. Mega Haxorus is here, and it's crashing its way straight to Ubers.

t0XSwxA.jpg

Happy, Godot?

Anyways, this thing is an absolute beast. It becomes a jawsome Dragon/Steel type on mega evolving, and is clad in thick, copper-gold armour that resembles plate and chainmail. It also sports a massive axe blade on its head and another dual one on its tail, which it lashes about to great effect.

Biologically, I put in more effort on this one's realistic design, so to speak. Long, stocky neck and torso means a very top heavy body balanced out by an equally stocky, long tail, and supported by massively thick hind legs. Tiny front legs emphasize its preference to just smash and lunge with its axe blades rather than perform any meticulous actions. It often lunges on all fours to better support its impressive edifice of a headpiece in battle, as illustrated. The head-axe is chipped from the constant battering that Haxorus does with it; the forward pointing tip is used in vicious downward jabs.

Mega Haxorus often battles with Mega Aggron over territories and mates. They hammer away at each other's ironclad bodies in tests of endurance and strength. Makes sense, because Mega Haxorus fittingly gets Battle Armour as an ability.

Yes, I know, it's a poor ability with a very cool (and perfectly fitting) name but a very situational use in preventing crits. I had to give it a nonfunctional ability just to balance it out and prevent it from becoming too broken, because oh man, look at these stats:

Base form: 76/147/90/60/70/97

Mega form: 76/182/130/75/90/87

LOOK AT THAT ATTACK! And that physical bulk! Its special bulk (and pointless SpAtk) also increase a bit to passable levels, but all that added metal bulk makes its already-awkward speed drop to an ungainly level à la Mega Garchomp. Unlike Megachomp, however....Haxorus gets Dragon Dance. Oh crud.

This thing is a behemoth. Nothing will want to take an Outrage from a friggin base 182 Attack stat, likely also boosted by DD or even SD if you have balls of steel. Fairies? Psh, this thing is a Steel type! And I'm granting it access to Iron Head and Head Smash, which it should've gotten to begin with. It also already has access to great moves like Iron Tail, Dual Chop, EQ, Superpower, and so on. It can even use its bulk well with a defensive RestTalk Dragon Tail set, which is pure evil.

I don't see what's stopping this. True, its speed is awkward, so it is outsped by a lot of things unboosted, and even at +1, many relevant Scarfers like Lando-T, Keldeo etc can outspeed and put a huge dent in it, and some very fat Pokémon like Skarmory can deal with it, but this is overcentralising to the max and will probably get the boot to Ubers, where it will still do very well. (Although once again it needs to set up a DD, because base 87 speed falls short of the Ubers base 90 benchmark, and it must compete with Mega Salamence for a spot on a team. Still, it has its definitive niche in mad power and great defensive and offensive typing!)

Until next time. May the Magnet Lord have mercy upon your souls, those who shall have to face this demon.

EDIT: Reminder to all that criticism or comments of any constructive kind are always welcome! Please do tell me what you think, it is of great help to my understanding.

Wow, finally Dragon/Steel! I wish this is real or at least featured in some fan game or battle simulator just for the sake experiencing how awesome Mega Haxorus is for real. Oh my, the design is awesome like always, my favorite part is that axe tail (somehow, it reminds me about Marceline's bass from Adventure Times which is a good thing since Marceline is my favorite character from the series). And that stats! As if it's not broken enough. Well, this is a perfect design of yours, my complain is just that the upper left arm is quite difficult to distinguish from the body but that's probably just because my eyes' problem. The color is also a bit too dark that it's rather difficult to see all the details but again probably just my eyes' problem. Excellent as always!

Link to comment

Why, thanks very much! Also, yes, I agree that in the hyperrealistic details, the individual arm might not be immediately distinguishable, but it is nevertheless distinct, I think. Also the colour was intentionally darkened in places where the light does not fall, to make it look even more realistic, because I dislike Haxorus's original, somewhat oily, mustardish colouration. I don't think it's any issue with your eyes, but then I don't know what such issue is. In any case, your points are valid, and I appreciate them.

Oh, also, I completely forgot to add dimensions to the last three megas:

EXCADRILL:

This thing is incredibly dense. Only 3'04", a foot taller than its base form, bit it weighs a massive 144 kg, almost 100 kg heavier than its base form.

MILOTIC:

It's very long, 35'4", 15 feet longer than base form, and weighs a gigantic 302 kg, about 140 kg heavier than base form.

HAXORUS:

Man, what a lot of heavy things we have here. This thing is 6'11 tall when fully upright, the same height as mega Salamence (although Salamence is measured differently, its height being the height of its head from the ground, and not the length of its body, which is much longer) and slightly shorter than Mega Garchomp. It weighs 255 kg, a full 150 kg heavier than base form.

Until later!
