Your Mission
Welcome to Academy City...well, seeing as you are an Esper, you likely have lived in Academy City for a good portion of your life, I guess the better thing to say would be welcome to the underbelly of Academy City. Granted, I doubt that you would need a welcome. After all, you all are nothing more than lab rats who do our odd jobs for us.

Now, then. Let me introduce myself so I can finally get straight down to business. I am Kihara Yuiitsu, your employer.

Ahh, does that name, Kihara, sound familiar? That's good. Seeing as you're part of the dark side, I'm sure you've heard the name dropped a couple of times in your line of work. That should help us to get straight to the point. As you have seen from your own experiences in the Dark Side of Academy City, scientific progress is not something that Academy City attains through what one would call ethical methodology.

In fact, we tend to find that ethics and morality restrain the human pursuit of knowledge. But that's where the term Kihara comes in. Kihara is the name given to people like me who forgo all pretenses of ethics and humanity for the sake of acquiring knowledge through experimentation. In a sense, though, we are like a family. Even if most Kiharas share a bloodline, though, it's hard to say that there is a sense of camaraderie between us. In the end, the only real tie between the Kiharas is the desire to pursue science.

As a result, all of the Kiharas reside here in Academy City where the technology and knowledge gap between here and the rest of the world is...about thirty years. We don't like to talk to the outside world about that.

So, here is where the problem lies. As a result of the tension between Academy City and Russia that escalated into the start of World War III two days ago, the illusion that the Academy City's monopoly on scientific development may not last has begun to ripple throughout. As such, we have Kiharas making preparations for exodus from the city.

The job is quite simple in concept. You are to eliminate these rogue Kiharas before they can complete their flights from Academy City.

Will you take this job?

Background
Setting
Academy City is a landlocked, sovereign city-state surrounded by walls within the boundaries of the Tokyo Metropolitan Employment Area. The city consists of a large number of schools that range from kindergarten to university level where students will learn while simultaneously undergoing the power curriculum program. In fact, 80% of the 2.3 million people who live in the boundaries of Academy City are students. While there are some rare exceptions such as Tsuchimikado Maika, most students in the city do undergo the Power Curriculum Program.

Academy City is subdivided into 23 "School Districts", each with its own specific purpose as shown below.

Esper (能力者 Nōryokusha, lit. "Ability User")

Esper is the blanket term given to anyone who has undergone Academy City's Power Curriculum Program. In general, Espers can be identified as people who emit AIM (with only one notable exception) and have what is called a Personal Reality.

AIM (or An Involuntary Movement) is an invisible energy Espers unconsciously tend to emit. As Espers produce this energy, it aggregates into what is called an AIM Diffusion Field. AIM Diffusion Fields can manifest in a number of ways contingent on the Esper's Personal Reality. For example, Mikoto's AIM Diffusion Field manifests as a weak electromagnetic field while Accelerator's manifests as his reflection barrier.

Personal Reality is the foundation of how an Esper's power works. As the Esper undergoes the Power Development Curriculum, the Esper is subject to various treatments such as drugs, hypnosis, and sensory deprivation all for the purpose of strengthening the Personal Reality. In a sense, the Personal Reality is a reality, detached from actual reality, that the Esper imposes upon reality by creating microscopic changes that accumulate. Komoe-sensei once compared it to being able to choose whether the cat in the Schrödinger's Cat thought experiment was alive or dead regardless of the reality that opening the box would have collapsed onto otherwise. In a sense, Espers are micro-scale reality warpers.

Due to how Esper powers work, each Esper has only one type of Esper Ability. As such, it is impossible for a single Esper to have multiple abilities, though that has never stopped the ambitious and zealous scientists of Academy City from pursuing it.

Esper powers are rated on a level scale from 0 to 5 with zero being the weakest.

For more details, visit the Esper, AIM, and Personal Reality pages on the Index wiki.

A list of Esper powers from within the series is also available on the Esper page of the Index wiki.

Dark Side
Academy City's Dark Side is refers to the criminal underworld of Academy City. Reaching to the very top of the city's administration, as stated, it is often engaged in criminal enterprises, such as human experimentation, espionage, and assassinations. Much of the science side story lines is concerned with the characters struggle against the Dark Side of Academy City. The name refers to the contrasting image of what the Academy City wants to portray, a technologically advanced city filled with students wanting to become Espers.

(The Dark Side is highly varied though each denizen of the dark side is twisted in their own special way. I originally was going to give more details but I realized that there are a lot of details to the Dark Side. As such, I have to let you guys shoot in the dark a bit for backstories. Don't worry, I'll guide you and point out any contradictions so you can fine tune it.)

Sign-up Template:
Name: (Should be a Japanese name due to Academy City being located in Tokyo and the fact that there were only ever two foreigners out of the entire cast of Espers in the canon so far. I will be pretty ironclad on this rule.)
Age: (between 13 and 21)
Gender:
Appearance:
Backstory: (All your characters are going to be characters who for some reason or another have ended up becoming a part of the dark underbelly of Academy City. Please do give a believable reason as to how your PC ended up there. For example, Musujime Awaki is being blackmailed with her comrades' lives or Tsuchimikado who was a double agent.)
Personality:
Ability Name: (Esper Abilities in this verse tend to have some eccentric names such as Agitate Halation, Move Point, AIM Stalker, or Violence Doughnut. Have a little fun with this and try to be creative.)
Ability: (This is the part I am going to evaluate the most. Due to the nature of the verse, I will need to evaluate the ability to make sure it falls consistent with the verse itself and will give you feedback so we can refine it into something that works in the RP. Once the ability is refined enough, I will give it a Level from 0-5. Do not expect to get a Level 5, however, as there are only seven level 5s within the canon of the verse and I really do not want to alter that. Do remember that just because your characters ability may not be high leveled, it does not also mean that it will not have its uses.)
Extra Skills: (Aside from your PC's ability, let me know if there are any extra skills such as hacking or First Aid, for example)

Final Note
While this RP has a clear-cut objective, feel free to have your character move to wherever you would like. Explore the city a bit. Whilecertain forcesmay come if they feel your character is getting too side-tracked from the mission, I will find ways to make it so you that you have an opportunity to escape them. Part of what I want in this RP is for the players to come to understand the setting their characters are running around in as well as the people who live there and their lives. Academy City may only be one city but it is a huge city with many many entities which drive it in the direction it moves. While I may not be able to have events for every location, I'll make damn sure that your characters have something to do or a new character to interact with.

As usual, if you have any questions or confusions, don't hesitate to ask.

I may be new to hosting an RP, but I'll try and make sure that this is a fun RP for you all.

Murdoc-

Kita Haruki-Level 3 Chromatography Shift

Name: Kita Haruki

Age: 17

Gender: Male

Appearance: Short and somewhat androgynous looking. Straight hair is just under shoulder length, and its color varies from day to day due to a small application of his power. A similar variance happens with his eye color, though not as often due to the change requiring a bit more focus. He claims not to remember the original colors of either. Tends toward somewhat flamboyant clothing. Looks younger than he is.

Backstory: The Kitas are a pair of Child Errors, abandoned at a young age by unknown parents; their surname remembered by the older of the two (by four years), Haruki. He claims not to remember anything of them other than this, and vaguely calling them "terribly boring" when asked his thoughts on them or of his memories relating to them. Like many children in Academy City, they were put through the Power Curriculum Program. Being a Child Error, he ended up being subjected to the darker side of the "schooling," which did in fact bring his ability to the forefront at some cost to his general well-being. This is another thing he describes as "boring" or "lame," though he will share some details if one presses him enough.

As his schooling progressed and both he and his sister grew older, he began to wonder about her. Deciding to investigate the files on her, he managed to worm his way into the records through exploiting a security vulnerability; namely, a carelessly unattended computer, though Haruki says he could have found another way in if he had wanted. Navigating to his sister's files, he discovered something confirming his worst suspicions; due to the success that he had experienced, they planned to subject her to "more rigorous curriculum" involving some powerful and relatively untested drugs, along with enhanced versions of the other techniques they had used on him. He put a plan into action quite quickly, personally assaulting the scientists that were to be responsible with the strongest light source he could locate and a lens to focus it. Essentially, he attacked them with a "laser" manipulated with the use of his power (though true lasers have different properties, he just used highly focused light to set them on fire), and was subdued and carried off to the Reformatory for his trouble.

Once he arrived and was allowed to stew for a while, he was approached with an offer: Leave the Reformatory in exchange for becoming an underground agent. Though it would likely mean doing tasks for some of the same sorts of people that he had previously attempted to "laser" or "hit with a death ray," he accepted the offer for two reasons: one, he could escape from a situation that was totally incompatible with his free-spirited personality, and two, he could possibly prevent the "enhancement" of his sister's curriculum.

Personality: Quite cheery and absentminded. Has a short attention span for the most part, and is prone to wandering mentally, physically, and verbally. He seems much less intelligent than he is because of this. He is very curious about virtually everything and everyone. Good memory, terrible work ethic. Seems nice enough. Deeply protective of his sister Kimiko.

Ability Name: Chromatography Shift

Ability: Change the reflective or refractive properties of objects as long as physical contact or very close proximity (less than 10cm) is maintained. Only one property can be manipulated at once. For example, he could make a sheet of paper into a perfect mirror, but couldn't make it into a lens or use it to project an image because it's only more reflective and doesn't refract light. Manipulation of opaque objects is also more difficult, and increasing their refraction has a very limited effect because most of the light passing through is absorbed in the first place. With very fine manipulation and enough time to calculate and prepare (5-10 minutes for a totally new image on average, depending on size and general complexity), it is possible to use a lens or mirror and a light source to project images.

Extra Skills: Good at math in general, and very knowledgeable about optics for obvious reasons. Also has virtually every system for naming color in computer systems memorized, along with excellent visual memory.

KosherKitten-

Fukui Kiyoko-Level 4 Effervescent Thrust

Name: Fukui Kiyoko

Age: 15

Gender: Female

Appearance: Short, extremely short, Kiyoko is only 4'2." She has wavy, medium length black hair dyed with a pale yellow stripe over her left eye.Her eyes are a dull grey, only showing emotion when she wants them too. She has a large wardrobe, but her default outfit is to wear a red tank top, black jean shorts, pale yellow knee-high socks, and black tennis shoes. Her nails are generally painted black and she wears a pair of gold, lightning-bolt-shaped earrings

When expecting to go into combat, she dons a metal breastplate and gauntlets especially made to easily be removed by her power (the gauntlets are more like metal plates strapped to the back of her arm and hand) These are usually worn over her clothing, but can be worn under if the clothing is loose enough. She also takes off her earrings

Backstory: Kiyoko grew up with only one dream: To be a ballerina. She spent years of her childhood in classes and at recitals. She learned several languages in preparation for the day she would be able to tour the world and show them her dancing. Of course these dreams were absolutely dashed when her parents decided to send her and her brother to Academy City. She claims that she was given the choice and that she only came because she didn't want her brother to be left alone.

But she would say that how she got to Academy City isn't important. Once she was there, her life before ceased to exist. In Academy City she had to find a new dream, and the dream she chose wasn't nearly as innocent as her first. If she couldn't make people love her with her grace, she would make them love her with whatever she could find. At first she tried to become a strong esper, but when she realized that esper level only gave respect, not love and adoration, she decided that achievements were not enough. She began to change herself, becoming whatever she felt would endear a person to her most. But instead of improving things, all she did was push what friends she had gained in the city away

Eventually she just gave up on trying to get people to worship the ground she walked on and became more of a delinquent than a student. Despite warnings and protests from her brother, it wasn't long before her activities eventually caused her to slip through the cracks into Academy City's underground

She doesn't keep in touch with her parents anymore, but she does visit her brother from time to time. She never shows herself to him, she just watches him from the shadows during his work with Judgement. Occasionally she leaves notes for him to let him know she's okay or give him a riddle about whatever shady thing she's going to do next in hopes of him catching her (He's notoriously bad at riddles)

Personality: Kiyoko is exceptional at hiding her true personality, having a number of personae she can adopt at any given time. Her true personality is a mystery to everyone but herself. Although if one were to see her in private, they could catch glimpses of it. The one thing that she doesn't try to hide (unless of course the persona she's using makes it a requirement) is her love of ballet. It's her lifeline to who she was before. The personality she displays most often is that of a spoiled little girl who always says what she wants and isn't afraid to throw a tantrum to get it. She's bossy and more than a little bit of a pest. She also refers to everyone as being inferior to her, even if they're her senior (although not those above her on the metaphorical totem pole)

Ability Name: Effervescent Thrust

Ability: Indiscriminately pushes everything solid within a one meter radius from Kiyoko's center of mass directly away from her at high speed. This will shove away everything from humans to the ground to Kiyoko's clothes. She has no control over the speed or area (although she wants to learn how to control it better) When used over a strong enough surface it will cause Kiyoko to levitate upwards, but if the ground below her is too weak she will smash through it and fall downward. Usually the effect will be somewhere between these two extremes

Extra Skills: Good dancer (mainly ballet, but it carries over into some other styles as well), skilled at reading social scenarios, skilled at manipulation, multilingual (speaks five languages fluently and knows the basics of several others), and totes adorbs

Stratos

Komuri Makoto-Level 4 Howling Dirge

Name: Komuri Makoto

Age: 20

Gender: Male

Appearance: Approximately 5"7. Has a semi-fair complexion with a head full of shoulder length, fringed black hair that often partially obscures one of his vibrantly crimson eyes. His most notable traits, however, are his feminine-looking face and physical build- narrow shoulders, a slight frame, and neutral voice pitch combined with a curved hip line- leading the vast majority of people to have mistaken Makoto for a female throughout his life. His typical dress consists of little more than a long white coat draping down to his calfs, overtop a loose, black turtle neck and form fitting black jeans.

Backstory:

Born in a relatively small town in the Niigata Prefecture, the youngest of three siblings and lone son of the family. Despite the gaps in their ages, Makoto and his elder half-sisters Asami and Kitsune were rather close growing up, with both sisters being a bit overprotective of him and even smothering at times. Even from a young age, Makoto had a certain charm about him, something his mother often said he got from his grandfather... right along with his vindictiveness and a cruelty streak a mile long. Other boys in the village who would try to poke fun at him for "having a girly-looking face" would often be met with physical retaliation, or if they were too strong for that option to be readily viable, some other form of more discreet retribution. It wasn't uncommon for one of his sisters to have to step-in and break things up before he escalated a situation too far. Eventually though, the issue more or less resolved itself as the other boys finally began to wise up and realize that the Makoto was a target whose reactions were far too volatile... it would be far easier to pick on someone more passive; someone who wouldn't knock them to the ground and proceed to kick them in the ribs while they're down.

Makoto's more... volatile qualities were never quashed though, they simply went dormant for a few years- no need for them to come out... or at least, that's how it was until his mother was killed during a particular... incident. To this day, no one is exactly sure what events precisely occurred that night, or in what order they did so, what is known however, is that Korumi Misami's live could've been saved had she been just heard. She died because no one could hear her screams or her pleading. Some however, think that the real reason she died wasn't because those people who happened to be nearby couldn't hear her, no, no...

They believe it's because they chose not to hear her. And Misami's Husband and Children were just a few among those in the town who suspected as much. Out of the four of them, though, ten year-old Makoto understandably handled her loss the worst, beginning to act out, lash out really, towards other children- specifically those related to the individuals who could've done something that night but for some reason never did. Things steadily escalated. The altercations he caused grew worse and worse as his rage swelled and grew. His father had soon seen enough though... seen enough of his son's actions to know with certainty that as the situation was, things would only get worse. There was too much for the boy, losing his mother like he had....That was the simple fact of the matter. And unfortunately, he was dealing with the stress and pain of the situation in the one way he had always excelled at...

But though he understood his son's pain, by no means could he dismiss his behavior. But punishment... wasn't the correct avenue... it wouldn't solve anything, only make the boy's budding hatred grow further, and maybe even turn it onto his own father. No... things were far more complex than punishment could solve. And he knew from his failed attempts that trying to talk to the boy and reason with him, calm him down, wasn't going to work either...That left one but path.

For the boy's best interest, Makoto needed to get away from home for a while; needed to be removed from the place where he had been caused so much pain, and was now beginning to in turn cause it onto those he had deemed responsible. He needed a new environment, a place to start fresh, leave the troubling memories in the past. And so it was that Korumi Razan made the arrangements and filled out the necessary documents. His sisters put up a protest, but... they couldn't think of anything better, not when they were hard pressed to come up with some solution. Makoto gave no protest though. Infact, he had nothing to say at all.

Just pure and utter silence...The same type of pure and utter silence that had killed his mother.

His first two weeks exiled to Academy City were perhaps the most reclusive he'd ever been in his entire life. He spoke just barely enough to answer any required questions, didn't bother opening his mouth otherwise. It mattered not how advance the city was, or the that he had the potential to develop some type of power here- it was still the place of his exile, his virtual prison. Eventually though, as time passed and he underwent the PCP and his schooling, he had little choice but to get over the sense of isolation if he wanted to ever get somewhere or make any progress... he was stuck there, that much was clear. So he had might as well just make the most out of it.

He started to actually try to make friends as he developed his ability, both of which were rather easy for him. And friends were really all he had at the end of the day... aside from the manipulation of sound. The irony of it all was almost painful at times- the fact that the one ability he'd manage to manifest was the control of the very type of force which could've prevented that tragedy long ago...

His life in the city took an unexpected turn during highschool however. When a liason working for a private research facility within the city's darker side approached him with both an employment offer to help eliminate a certain troublesome individual who could only be detected via sound, as well as a good bit of blackmail for recently hospitalizing someone who had made unwanted and repeated advances towards a close friend of his... Makoto was left with the option of either cooperating and seeing what they wanted, or running the risk of them informing anti-skill he had been the assailant and earning a visit to the reformatory. And he had no plans to spend his days locked in a cell. The job was relatively simple- the researchers would provide Makoto with a gun and some basic training in firearms, then would send him into the locked-down area of the facility to locate the data thief using his ability and kill him. The researchers themselves would take care of everything else afterwards such as disposing the body and recovering what he had stolen from the network... or course, Makoto would have to make an agreement of secrecy as well in order to protect the facility's research. That single event that served as Makoto's first experience with the dark side.

But it hasn't been the last, not by a long shot. Makoto doesn't break his word... and he had handled the job fairly well. The researchers sought out his help in various other matters afterwards- this time offering him compensation without the threat of blackmail hanging over his head, given that if either of them said anything, they'd both be in the same metaphorical boat at that point regardless. His tasks would encompass a number of things; from hunting down industrial spies, hackers, and various other data thieves, to becoming a spy himself, to even helping conduct certain experiments (though much to his appreciation, was never asked to be a subject), etc. Eventually other private facilities and organizations even began to reach out to him as well.

Whenever he's not serving as virtual cross between a research assistant and gun for hire though, he tends to devote time to his university studies or simply hangs out and socializes with friends.

Personality:

Suave and overall friendly, unless you decide to screw with him. Makoto is a man of his word, and doesn't take Obligations lightly- subsequently willing to put in genuine work and effort towards a task without complaint, holding himself, and at times others as well, to his own personal standards all the while. He is a staunch and loyal friend, valuing the people he loves incredibly high and willing to go far out of his way to help them, regardless of potential risk to himself, or the possibility of having to resort to some questionable activities or means to reach the desired end. Over time he's largely come to just stop caring altogether whenever someone mistakes his biological sex for female and won't even try to correct it anymore unless it's actually necessary for the sake of official accuracy.

Beneath His good-natured and likable surface though, lurks a darker side to Makoto. One that, while there may be only brief glimpses and flashes of it in certain situations and context, never fails to emerge in full force whenever someone he cares about has been threatened or harmed, or he himself feels he has been crossed- the side of Makoto that is ruthlessly vindictive, cruel, cunning, and calculated... the side of him that bears the same traits that once made people fear the wrath of his grandfather, long ago...

Ability Name:

"Howling Dirge"

Ability Function:

Technically a Vibration Control ability. Makoto's AIM Dispersion Field and Personal Reality grant him an Extrasensory Perception of vibration and sound and allows him to freely manipulate Sonic variables, and by extension, sound energy, via his Aim Diffusion Field. His ability is capable of generating a Sound Wave with a maximum intensity rivaling that of flash-bang grenade (approximately 180 decibels), and a maximum frequency of up to 60,000 Hertz, and can reflect sounds by recalculating their formulas and variables, as well as selectively cancel out sounds via the same procedure of recalculating, which can be used to set his AIM Field to discriminate between and render any sound interacting with it mute; In contrast though, it can also be used to amplify sounds up to the maximum decibel and frequency level he can manage, or even distort or morph a sound by altering it's frequency and resonance. It is even possible for Makoto to use his ability to manipulate sound in order to Direct and focus a sound wave into a concentrated directional beam that can cause intense and debilitating pain, vertigo, disorientation, and even death to targets depending on the intensity and frequency, and has a maximum effective range of approximately 50 meters at it's most focused degree.

Extra Skills:

Highly Knowledgeable in the fields of Sound, Vibration, Resonance, and Acoustics. He is capable of masking his own voice and imitating those of others and doing impressions or various other sounds as well, thanks in no small part to his ability. He is adept in the art of stealth and discretion. He possesses a surprising knack for physical violence and is especially adept as a close-quarters melee combatant, though his marksmanship is none too shabby either.

@Murdoc
I guess the only other detail I would ask for is calculation time. As far as everything else goes with that ability, it looks good to me.

Just minor point with regards to the name: Chromatography refers to the technique of separating a mixture into various compounds based on qualities like polarity of the molecule. It's more of a nitpick and I understand what you're going after, but I do recommend that you change that.

I know. The literal meaning of the words is "color writing," which is why I still used it. I can probably come up with a better name, though.

Calculation time would vary with the complexity of the image. Thinking of it, I'm not entirely sure what would be reasonable for say, an image with the same resolution as my monitor (1366x768.) I'd say probably 10-20 minutes for a totally new image, but that time could be shortened by taking shortcuts or using previous calculations?

*Looks at the etymology*

Well, what do you know? Alright. That's fine then.

Hmmm…would you mind expanding it overall, then? Because I might not have a clear enough understanding of what the ability is overall. If I'm right, then 10-20 minutes is likely way too long a calculation time. (Though I generally feel that 10-20 minutes will likely be too long due to the fact that many other powers have rather quick calculation times.)

It's kind of tough to figure out what a reasonable calculation time is to me, mostly due to lack of context in the series. I was more thinking of the fact that making the kind of minuscule, precise changes needed to turn a plain mirror or lens into a surface that will reflect a clear image would take a certain amount of time rather than the actual utility of the power. I suppose it'd be better to ask you: what is a good calculation time for a totally new image, without any sort of shortcut? (If it could be composed of multiple, simpler images that had already been calculated and used, or something along those lines, then it could cut the time by as much as half.)

EDIT: Simpler stuff like the aforementioned paper mirror or using an object as an impromptu lens would be basically instant, though.

Working on sheet. But I wanted to point out that creating a complex image like that would be extremely time consuming. Ten to twenty minutes is perfectly fine, if anything it's a little low. He's basically going pixel by pixel to create an image from a mirror and a light. Even if he could do the calculations to display each pixel instantly, you have to keep in mind the time it would take to create the image too

Go into MS paint and make a 1366x768 image pixel by pixel. Then come back and say ten to twenty minutes is too long :P (And keep in mind that your computer does the display calculations almost instantly)

EDIT:

BEHOLD, AWESOME NUDITY POWAS (WIP)

((Note that all names given are listed in the traditional Surname, First Name Format))

Name: Miura Yuu

Age: 20

Gender: Male

Appearance: Approximately 5'7. Has a head full of Disheveled, pitch black hair and bears cold, dark blue eyes that have a way of making most of those who make contact with them tend to feel uncomfortable, almost as if he's glimpsing into their soul. Has a fair complexion, and aside from the unsettling nature of his eyes, most of his other physical features are average to that of a typical Japanese man and as such are rather forgettable at a glance as a result. His normal attire consists of mainly dark colors and clothing that offers little restriction to movement.

His outfit of choice while carrying out jobs for clients however, consists of pure black Duster over-top a Tactical Vest of the same coloration. He also dons form-fitting gloves and dark cargo pants the same color as his vest and coats, bloused into the pair of black Combat Boots on his feet.

Backstory:

Was often bullied and ridiculed when he was younger due to his fear of just what his own power could do if not controlled and restrained, having seen just what he was capable of doing to matter... not simply destroying it, but actually virtually wiping it out; erasing any trace of it's tangible existence. Though he honestly despised those who singled out him out, not even they were terrible enough to warrant him wanting to inflict a fate so horrible on them. Yuu was eventually saved from his constant endeavors when a sympathetic girl, Amaya Rei, came to his defense and scarred off his would-be tormentors. And he didn't know it, it was that day that Yuu met the best friend he would ever have...

or lose, for that matter.

As the years went by, the friendship between Rei and him grew stronger. Rei gave Yuu something he had been lacking, taught him something he didn't even know about himself- the fact that him always holding back on his Anti-Matter ability didn't make him a coward... because Cowards acted only to protect themselves, and themselves only, not others. Eventually she even helped him come to terms with it, practice and develop it to the point where he could use it without fear of the repercussions...gave him the courage to not only control it, but to master it. The two were friends all through Middle School, All through High School, even entered University together...

But everything changed that night... just shortly after they started their first semester. That night he took her to their usual spot, expecting it to be empty, just like their spot always was...

He couldn't protect her that night. No, no... it was her who had protected him, in fact... used her own power and her own self to shield him, when it should've been the other way around.

He failed her that night. He couldn't help Rei... he could only retaliate against those who were responsible. And retaliate he did... retaliated till he had broken the limits of his own body in his rage, his raw fury and drive to wipe them all out of the very fabric of physical existence. They were punks, street rabble, and they had poked a sleeping bear... a bear sleeping off a case of rabies at that.

He swallowed all of them in darkness... and left nothing behind. No blood, no bodies, no evidence, just black, writhing masses... They might as well have never been born at all. It was on that night that Yuu failed... and it was on that night that he resolved he'd never fail her again, even if it killed him. It was on that night... that he decided that whatever strength Rei had seen in him back then, he was going to actually start using it.

The encounter left them both in the hospital- Rei from the blow she'd sustained, and himself from pushing himself farther than he ever had before... for unleashing control and letting it run wild against them. The doctors told him he was damn lucky to have survived dragging them both into the front lobby all the way from the park after suffering that much internal trauma like he did- figured that if he had been able to do that, chances were he'd recover. She was a different story though. They keep changing things. They told him a week, a day, a month, a year... not at all. Their prognosis was like a game of musical chairs- round and round and round you go, when she wakes up, hell if they know. She did wake up though, eventually... after a full month. He would've rejoiced... but they had told Yuu that even if she woke up, she would never remember anything either. those days would be gone forever, beyond retrieving...

Unlike her never waking up though, the medically inclined bastards had actually been right about that prediction. Yuu... didn't know what to do. Rei was alive, and actually still able to have something called a life- he should've been glad... but how could he, damn it? How could he, when in a way, she had practically died regardless? She had lost it, everything, every piece of her old life, every memory, all the time they'd spent together, all the things they'd been through... and not just the memories about him, what about the memories about her family- her childhood, her entire life? Satisfied... satisfied, they had told him to be. Satisfied about how it turned out, about how it didn't turn out like they'd predicted at the start...

What the fuck kind of satisfaction was he supposed to get out of knowing that yeah, the girl whose bed side he'd spent so long by had managed to wake up, she had virtually done it as a different person? As a blank slate? What satisfaction was he supposed to get out of the fact that no matter how much he visited, how much he tried to show her things from the past and explain everything- it would never come calling back to her? what satisfaction was he to get out of the fact that her entire life had been stolen by some bitch of Sukeban- and that he had practically fucking stood there and watched it happened, couldn't move, couldn't stop it?!

Yuu just couldn't... couldn't deal with it all. He needed time, needed time to think, needed... he didn't even know what he needed.

But "Stranger" had known what he'd needed... no, more like what he wanted. Ah yes, Stranger, that mysterious, suited lying asshat of bastard. That man who had siddled up and approached him at the receptionist desk like they were old buddies or something, introduced him like he knew Yuu better than the back of his own slick hand. That man, who right to Yuu's face, had lied and said he had a way to help his little "girlfriend" as he called her. Told him he could help Rei get her memories back...

If Yuu was willing to pay a price, that is. A price... that might be a bit steep. He didn't know what else to do... or what he had to lose at least hearing the shady fellow out in private.

33 names. 33 faces. 33 lives that needed ending. 33 errors that needed to be erased from the system. And they had variety to; Black Hacks who had targeted the wrong damn people, turn cloaks, data thieves holding ransoms... list went on and on. Even included another hitman... one who had probably gotten on someone's wrong side- taken a job for the wrong client...

yeah... a hitman. That's what "Stranger" wanted out of Yuu. If he wanted Rei back, he'd have to put that Anti-Matter to good use, get rid of a few people, of the 33 names... wipe em out, leave no trace, just like he had in the park that night. He was the "Magic Eraser", as Stranger called him, the solution to all his issues... if he rubbed his back, he'd rub Rei's- er... so to speak. he just needed to rub out a few stains.

What did yuu have to lose really? It would be better to take the chance and end up getting her back then going on trying to live this whole thing out, wouldn't it? He'd already erased a few thugs, had already wiped out a few stains... so what would a few more mean? It's not like any of these people were even freaking innocent- not if they were so involved in the underground workings of the city that they had targets practically plastered on their heads...

It only occured after the work was actually done how much of a fool Yuu had been. Only after he'd spent all that time hunting down the man's leads, taking pointers from him, advice, letting the fuck groom him into his own little personal death dealer. Only after he'd spent over a year figuring out that he had to be quieter, had to avoid sight, had to exploit the element of surprise with every job- make it so they didn't see it coming. Only after he'd gotten the gear he needed, had gotten shot at, blasted at, almost blown up.

It was only after Yuu had finished becoming a monster, had finally become a predator and a hitman, a real killer for hire, had finally finished tracking and taking down number 33, the other hitman himself, that he realized he'd been duped. Stranger never intended to help him. The bullet the psycho had tried, and failed, to lodge in his damn skull the final time they ever met had proven that much. He been expecting a phone number, an address, a name, hell anything that would uphold the other end of the bargain... a gun pointed in his face definitely wasn't it. The taunts he had thrown as he just...vanished... hell, they made it worse. Was gone before Yuu could erase him too for it, throw him right in with the other errors who'd been wiped.

What did he have to show for his efforts? 33 kills. A whole year and a half spent as an errand boy for some creeper in a suit. A gear loadout he had never thought he'd have any use for, never dreamed he'd even go out of his way to get... but he was overlooking the biggest things.

Yuu had gained the know how to find people. He knew how to find scum, he knew how to get rid of scum, and he knew how to surprise scum, even if he was just scum himself.

He had been stupid, fine. Rei probably was never getting her memories back... as much as he hated to admit... after everything he'd done, every person he'd killed, he'd come to just be thankful of the fact that she didn't remember him as who he had been... and that she didn't know what he'd done for her either. Because if she had, it would've horrified the old Rei.

So fine... he wasn't going to get the old her back... never. but if he could make the new her happy, maybe... maybe that would be enough. He could live with that at least.

But Stranger... Stranger was going to die. That much, he knew for certain. It didn't matter how much deeper he had to go into the dark, how many more jobs he had to pursue, how many leads he had to follow or how many clients he had to accept before he got some good info out of someone as payment...

He was going to find the bastard who had persuaded him into becoming a monster.

And then he was going to fucking wash his hands of the whole mess. The moment Stranger's head was on a pike, he was gonna be done with the darkside...

and never look back. but until then...

the only way to go...is forward.

Deeper.

This... is just another job to him. Another hit to fill. Another contract to get paid for...

and who knows, maybe it'll be the one? The opportunity to finally find his prey?

The opportunity to potentially open the way to ending things...

Personality:

Highly Capable of compartmentalizing. Cold and calculating on the job, dispatches his target and saves any worrying or second doubts for after it's done and he gets paid. Behind the cold, all-business exterior though, in the deepest reaches of his soul, Yuu takes no real pleasure in "Erasing" people, and houses more self hatred and disgust for the things he's allowed himself to do then he can express, wants to just be able to finally stop, wants to leave his old work behind and walk away, but feels that until his ultimate target is finally gone, he can't stop... because if he does, then that man will have won. That man will have gotten away. The only real thing he can pride himself on about the situation at this point is the fact that at least he's a bit above a standard murderer- he only ever went after criminals and scum... not that he can do much talking down about them... cause even if he's "Better", it's not by very much if at all.

Aside from merciless business persona though, he still has a heart, even if he fails to acknowledge it; willing to go out of his way to help and protect those he cares about, even if it might mean personal sacrifice or doing somethings considered less than ethical... hell, it's what got him into this whole mess to begin with- wanting to help her. Not one to ever complain about his problems, at least outwardly. He doesn't bother anymore, it's a waste of breath. he merely takes them as they are and figures out how to deal with them one by one.

If he can actually help someone and he feels they deserve it, he'll at least put up a genuine effort to do so... if for no other reason than trying to at least prove to himself he still has a chance to turn back; That if he does manage to walk away... he'll be strong enough not to go back.

Ability Name: "Anti-Matter"

Ability:

Yuu can produce and psycho-kinetically manipulate an "unknown" substance at will. This dark, opaque substance, often referred to by the Esper himself as simply "Anti-Matter", can be manipulated into a solid, liquid, or gaseous state of matter by Yuu altering it's density to past a certain point. The substance is capable of selectively breaking down any molecules and molecular bonds that come into contact with it on Yuu's Demand; Yuu refers to the process of consisting of a "Stable" phase in which the properties of the Anti-Matter are dormant, and an "Unstable" phase, in which he actually activates the substances effect. It is crucial to note one thing above all else though; Upon consuming any type of Matter, "Anti-Matter" adds the target's mass to it's own, in essence "growing" in quantity as a result.

This growth does not come without a cost however. Sustaining the mass of the Anti-Matter causes a proportionally rising level of strain on Yuu's body, going from the stages of Minimal, Moderate, Heavy, and Critical, and Yuu, as he learned the... rather hard and excruciating way, has a critical limit on the maximum mass of the Anti-Matter he can continuously manifest and control before entering into territory where he begins to risk serious bodily injury, and if he pushes much further beyond it, even death- that Maximum Critical Mass being some 4309 Kg of Anti Matter((4309kg is right on the cusp between inflicting heavy and critical stress- it is the border point for him)).

To avoid this issue, Yuu has little choice but to exercise a degree of restraint with his power and re-absorb any excess Anti Matter that is created before it peaks over Maximum Critical Mass.

Anti Matter however, in addition to it's consumptive properties against matter, can also serve as a dampener and insulating shield against various forms of volatile energy, such as extreme heat, combustion, light, electricity, etc. It's mass will be consumed and destroyed proportionately to the amount of energy it absorbs however, and as a result, energy attacks can quickly deplete the Total Mass of Yuu's workable supply if it strikes with more force than he can actually generate and/or expand quick enough to replace what is lost.

The matter created by Yuu is not to confused with "True" or "Cosmic" Anti/Dark Matter however, as the ability nomenclature was chosen more as a way to literally convey the substance's general negative and destructive effects on regular matter.

Extra Skills: Is highly knowledgeable in Chemistry for obvious reasons (Ex, knowing the density and properties of substances to use as reference points). Has also developed adept stealth and tracking skills out of sheer necessity for discretion. Also posses a degree of knowledge pertaining to Forensics and and Intelligence Gathering.

Hot damn... took me four damn hours to get this up right like I wanted... so there. This is my shot in the dark for the backstory at least, since we've talked and you've already oked the powers.

I've tried to stay as true to the internal conflict and personality of his original form of old Gilwyn as I could... have to do an old character some type of justice afterall, I kinda owe it to all those I have sitting around.

So yeah... tell me if anything needs changing or editing or fine tuning, what have you...

Er, I know I'm not exactly the best judge of this, but having what amounts to a telekinetically controlled black hole sounds massively overpowered, especially given that it has so many special conditions attached and doesn't really seem to work off of a scientific principle of any sort.

That should be fine then. Though I would personally cut it to 5-10 minutes though. It's just that a lot of Espers in this series have very high calculation speeds. For example, let me show you a power I wrote for a ToAru RP on a different site:

(Diagnosis Touch):

Kohaku's power can be categorized as a subset of Psychometry. Her power, while it is not full psychometry, is an extremely specialized form which is used solely for the human body. By making direct contact or indirect contact by one degree (clothing, etc), she can read out all vital signs such as heart rate, pulse strength (making two contact points can allow her to read EKG signals), respiration rate, SpO2, blood pressure, and body temperature. Simply reading vitals can be done near instantaneously as Kohaku would only be focusing on certain elements. For example, if she needed to read EKG signals, she would only focus on the relevant data and ignore or delete extraneous data.

Aside from simply reading vital signs, she can also detect any issues on a body. For example, she would be able to detect and read a torn muscle, poisoning, or other forms of internal damage. She does this by being able to visualize the entire inner body as if it were an anatomy doll. She can also use this ability to detect weak points and defects in the body. This, however, can take from 20-40 seconds due to the sheer amount of data that she has to process when she does this. That only occurs if she makes short contact and lets go. Kohaku prefers to maintain contact as it helps her focus and cuts the time she needs to process the data in half.

This character basically does all of the calculations one would see in a CT or MRI such as back-projection in ~10-20 seconds when focused. So, espers tend to have rather high calculation speeds.

As for Strats character power, we've discussed this at length over PMs for the past week so I've approved of it generally because of his characters own tendencies with his powers. Plus, I wouldn't call it a black hole.

@Strat:

1) Thanks for doing the name order in the surname, given name format that is usually done in Japan. Saves me a lot of trouble.

2) I'll get back to you on the backstory as soon as possible as it is quite long (as well as the rest of your character).

@Alexus

1) I approved your friend request on Grand Order so enjoy having Elizabeth as support~

2) I see what you mean by nudity powers. XD

Overall, I see no issues. I do have a question. For example, lets say that there were microscopic powders or something of the sort (things that would normally count as solid), would those be blown away as easily as other things or would they be tougher to blow away due to lack of precision?

just for the record, me and hiss already discussed it at length before the profile was even made. In fact the ability was the first thing I worked on for this, the character was simply refubrished...

And just to give some context, there are far more powerful Espers alive within the cannon universe of this thing... just a few examples:

http://toarumajutsunoindex.wikia.com/wiki/Accelerator

http://toarumajutsunoindex.wikia.com/wiki/Kakine_Teitoku

http://toarumajutsunoindex.wikia.com/wiki/Shokuhou_Misaki

And that's just a few... without even dwelving into the type of power magicians and such can wield, which can arguably far exceed an esper in potential...the power levels of this whole thing go far beyond it.

As for the point of it having no basis in any scientific principle...

http://toarumajutsunoindex.wikia.com/wiki/Kakine_Teitoku

This particular canon fellow's power can literally just say "Fuck off" to the laws of physics in entirety, just to give a bit of perspective. Literally anything he can think of, he can theoretically do... and the basic premise of his and Yuu's abilties are more or less the same- the capability to create an unknown matter... The type that yuu creates is simply subject to more laws than Teitoku's is, given that well... teitoku's gives no damns... but yet Yuu must still adhere to things such as density, states of matter, etc...

yeah... the power I have created is really nothing compared to the grander scheme of how far the authors themselves have taken things in their story.

the possible power levels of this world are by their very nature are going to seem a bit ridiculous to anyone looking from the outside in... it strangely starts to make more sense as one actually sees how everything fits together though, at least it did for me... but still, yeah, shit gets pretty crazy man...

@Strat:

1) Thanks for doing the name order in the surname, given name format that is usually done in Japan. Saves me a lot of trouble.

2) I'll get back to you on the backstory as soon as possible as it is quite long (as well as the rest of your character).

Alrighty then, will do.

DAH! SPOILER WIKI ARTICLES!

Strat. Kakine hasn't been introduced in the anime yet…

I know you're immune to spoilers (as is Dobby) but please do watch out.

Especially since Kakine's wiki has spoilers for the Magic God Othinus Arc.

Speaking of which, Dark Matter will be appearing..heh..somewhere…*evil laughs*

*That* entity will be making an appearance, guaranteed…heh...

K, so, I'd just like to point out that Strat's character literally creates exotic matter. If it's not legitimate antimatter then the only way to remove matter from physical existence without a massive burst of energy or the creation of a singularity would be with an exotic matter. Basically what I'm saying is that his power's matter doesn't exhibit the properties of any substance capable of existing within the universe, therefore it must be an exotic matter (which would be matter not of this universe)

There's also the fact that the only canon esper (currently at least) that actually defies the laws of physics instead of manipulating them is the second most powerful esper in existence

The matter created by Yuu is not to confused with "True" or "Cosmic" Anti/Dark Matter however, as the ability nomenclature was chosen more as a way to literally convey the substance's general negative and destructive effects on regular matter.

BTW, antimatter and dark matter are two different things. Antimatter is the oppositely charged but equal mass version of matter. Although as far as I know we have yet to manipulate it, we do know it has to exist. Dark matter is a theoretical substance that has no properties other than mass and possibly heat, it's suspected to have something to do with gravity and/or the expansion of the universe

K, so, out of time, I'll finish explaining why this power doesn't work in the slightest later

Hoo, boy. I was a afraid of this.

Yuu's power is based on creating a substance which he can freely manipulate. For simplicity's sake, let us call it Substance A. Yuu has the ability to manipulate Substance A by telekinetically moving it around, causing changes of phase, and destabilizing it.

The difference between this and Kakine is that Kakine's Dark Matter is the equivalent of formulating a theoretical new universe with new laws and matter with different properties than matter seen in the universe, allowing it to exist, and being able to produce and manipulate that (seemingly without limit). Yuu's matter seems to be just something with one odd property. Despite that, it still follows the laws of Physics and Chemistry. Even its consumption follows basic rate laws. Part of the reason I'm allowing this is that it could be written off as a new undiscovered or unsynthesized compound that is being held together by Yuu's AIM Dispersion Field and Personal Reality.

As for the difference between Dark Matter, Dark Matter, Anti-Matter, and Anti-Matter, that did come up in our long PM deliberations.

Name: Tanaka Shuu

Age: 18

Gender: Male

Appearance: 6 ft. tall, black hair and brown eyes.

He seems to always have a grimace on his face, but that's just his default facial expression.

Black jeans, runners, and a zipper hoodie. Just your everyday civilian.

Backstory:

Former freelance headhunter, he took down his marks with caution. He only took on jobs that he knew would be successful.

Due to dealings in the past, he eventually grew to mistrust people, and to sleep with one eye open.

He quit headhunting and is looking for a more honest line of work.

Hangs around District 15 in order to find a job, but has no luck due to his lack of qualifications.

Personality:

Cautious and mistrusting.

Takes things at his own pace.

Often cheerful, despite his facial expression saying otherwise.

Ability Name (WIP)

Realized my previous ability probably wouldn't work "too" well in this universe.

Okay, since Hiss appears to have gone to bed, I'll give you a few pieces of advice on your character.

1. It seems like you've not put in a lot of effort into the character overall. Your backstory is far too short (I consider a paragraph to be an absolute minimum, personally), and your descriptions in general follow a similar trend. The backstory doesn't seem to mesh all that well with the 'verse at all, for that matter.

2. Your personality is a bit contradictory. While it's perfectly feasible for someone to have a case of resting bitch face and be generally mistrustful while still being happy, the two aspects don't seem to mesh well without further elaboration.

3. Your additional skills are pretty sue-ish, even for someone who's an assassin. It doesn't make sense for your character to have this throwing ability when he can create something that can be swung with enough force to slice steel, and being very agile isn't a skill.

4. On the topic of your ability, what does it actually do? Does your character manipulate graphene he has on hand? If so, how does he keep this very brittle material in usable shape and in large enough quantity to use? If not, what does he use to form it? What do you mean by "attaching a string?" Why is it invisible? Graphene is quite transparent but it's literally notable in part because you can see it. How does he control it? What scientific property or law of physics is being manipulated here? How does it display all of the properties you detail? Graphene is quite elastic for what it is, but it's also one of the stiffest substances known to man and is certainly not malleable under normal conditions.

Yeah i realize it needs a lot of work, which is why i scrapped the idea.

i figured i'd just put something down first and think about it tomorrow :P

The fact that you were worried people might complain is your first clue that the ability is a bad idea (Sorry if that sounds rude, it's supposed to be a legitimate hosting tip) If you are ever worried something might be broken, overly complicated, or only balanced because of how the character uses it, there's a good chance it's not a healthy power and you shouldn't allow it in your RP

Also, last night when I wrote my post, I had no idea what Kakine's ability was. Strat said it defide the laws of physics, so I pointed out that he was the second strongest esper in existence. And the only one known to actually defy physics

It can't be undiscovered, because it exhibits two properties that cannot exist according to the laws of the universe:

A. It can deconstruct matter without releasing an excess of energy

Don't get me wrong, there are ways to deconstruct matter within the laws of the universe, but they all expel a massive amount of energy. Also, keep in mind that the only way to do this at a subatomic level is through nuclear fission. Technically to do it at an atomic level it could be a chemical reaction, but that would form new substances, rather than only ripping apart non-Substance A substances

But alright, Mugino does something close to this with her electrons, so maybe it's plausible. But even so, the next bit just doesn't work

B. It can convert deconstructed matter into itself

Okay, so, even assuming Substance A could somehow perform nuclear fission without causing a huge explosion, it then has the issue of having to put all those subatomic particles back together into it's own atomic makeup. So first it has to capture them and prevent them from shooting off as radiation. Then it has to compress them. And while compressing them it has to make sure they don't form into other non-Substance A materials (which the would be infinitely more likely to form due to the fact that Substance A is not a natural substance) And even assuming it could somehow, miraculously, do all these things, you then have to take into account that the absorbed matter might not create a balanced chemical equation when it's formed into Substance A. Leaving you with leftover particles causing all kinds of instability. It is possible to forgo this issue by deconstructing the matter a level further into quarks, but that just brings us back to the issue of how it can deconstruct matter

Due to exhibiting these properties that cannot exist in any substance in the universe, it must be a substance not of this universe

Which brings me to my next pair of points:

This ability is equivalent to Mugino's ability. It displays several extremely similar properties such as being able to destroy anything thrown at it. It is somewhat limited by its critical mass factor, but it's still extremely close and makes up for it with greater versatility. This alone makes it very plausible that the ability could only exist as a level 5 ability, which was stated to be something we couldn't have

This ability also exhibits properties so far only shown by the second ranked level 5 esper. I've already demonstrated why Substance A must be an exotic substance. And so far the only ability capable of legitimately creating a substance that can't exist within the universe is Kakine. This again suggests that it would be a level 5 ability. Although, again, it is lacking in some properties that prevent it from being exactly the same

But then you combine these two points and realize that it has properties somewhere in between that of the fourth ranked esper and the second ranked esper. Which presents an extremely strong case for why it would have to be a level 5 ability

And then you point out that the character doesn't like to abuse it, and I point out that Musujime was still on an equivalent level with Shirai even though Musujime is recorded as being less comfortable with using her ability than Shirai is. Level is clearly about the ability to do something, not the willingness

K, so, breaks physics, level 5, and one more thing. Although this is more of a mechanics issue than a logic issue

To avoid this issue, Yuu has little choice but to exercise a degree of restraint with his power and re-absorb any excess Anti Matter that is created before it peaks over Maximum Critical Mass.

You never actually get rid of any of the mass. You say he has to re-absorb it, but then next time he uses his power it will still be at the same level of mass before he stopped using it. Basically, you never gave him any release, he sucks stuff in but it never goes back out

Alright, that should be everything. If you really want I can get into the more nitpicky stuff, but most of that can be handwaved so there's not much point to it

alright, look, enough damn it.

The entire reason I even went to the trouble of running the ability by hiss first in the first place was to try to make sure it would be alright and avoid this type of debating and subtracting from the actual point of things. Seeing as how that's honestly failed though, I'd much rather just scrap the power altogether and start over from scratch if it will mean this whole pointless back and forth that's starting will end.
