As for random NPC, there were those epic old guys that show up at the pokémon center in Mauville City in R/S/E/OR/AS. Those guys are the real champs.

Btw, two things. One: Dat Cynthia love tho.

Two: Ethan / Kris / Lyra (Forgot about these guys...) -> Yeah, those guys don't battle you not even once in the official games. Can not consider them rivals, but that just me.

That's what I would've done normally, but the one for Ash's friends doesn't have an Other or N/A option.
