is it that good? looking it up, it just looks like a 2000 defense attempt at a wall, but I suppose flamvells are able to support with spells/traps?

Flamvell guard is pretty good for being a level 1 tuner with extreme defense for it's level. and that's about it, as Flamvell doesn't have too much spell and trap support. though what they do have tends to be pretty good (Rekindle and Flamevell Counter

ah right, I forgot that levels were also relevant for synchros. that explains that then.
