  1. Ugh I hate reading research papers. Why do academics have to make things so... academic?

      It's interesting, I'll admit. But it's also annoying when I have to read 5 books' worth of academic writing to write a paper due next week ;~;

  3. I just spent like three hours working on Serene's crit anim. ...I hope I crit soon :x
  4. An island nation can work, it's along the lines of the small-scale. The main characteristics of being small-scale are that a) generally all the heroes know each other, generally your villains aren't all that powerful, c) you'd need to manage public opinion of the heroes along with the heroes' duties, d) international politics aren't a thing, though local business politicking is, e) your heroes will spend more time doing things like stopping everyday crime than they will fighting off megavillains. The culmination of all of the above is a narrative that has its greatest strength in its moral ambiguity: without a costumed alien swinging meteors everywhere, all you're left with is small-time thieves/murderers, and all of them have their own personal backstories, which means there's less of a clear-cut "bad guy". The onus then falls on the host to manage these backstories and NPC interactions. Both ways will require a lot of work, so make sure you know what you're getting yourself into.
  5. Reminder that most of those that go from reasonably successful to dead are usually due to the host getting lazy/busy/disillusioned Looks at Aftermath and Idols and cries
  6. Is your idea more Marvel/DC-influenced or WORM-influenced? Also, what's your scale? Small-scale or world-level? Superhero stories are usually one or the other - world-level lets you bring in bigger badder enemies while small-scale lets you focus more on things like morality and justice. Anything in between doesn't really work, in my experience. If you're going world-level, you're going to need to put in much more effort into worldbuilding and setting development, but if you're going small-scale, you'll need to do more work in character development to make NPCs which are worth interacting with.
  7. tfw procrastinating on doing work for the sake of doing more work

      You've just stumbled upon a paradox that has alluded even the Grandmasters of Procrastination for centuries... bravo, bravo indeed.

      Like I'm literally going "I don't want to do this now, I'll do it tomorrow" then I use the now-free time to do other work ._.

  8. Serene glanced to the side and noted Anna engaging another group of enemies. With no other targets in sight, she ran towards them, fire forming itself into a blade even as she moved. Skidding to a halt just behind Anna, she launched the projectile at the closer enemy. Moves to H4 and attacks Soldier 1
  9. Just finished writing a scene that's probably my fave so far :3

  10. I've brought up the idea of a customisable RP system for this forum several times before, so naturally I'm in support of this idea. The last time I brought it up, the main issue, I believe, was that it would require a lot more work on the part of the host. Still, if you can create a system that's simple enough to manage while being reasonably flexible in execution, it would definitely be a good thing. One major issue I think the system would need to iron out is positioning - you need some way to fairly position PCs, or you run into situations like archers being attacked by warriors immediately, losing the range advantage, as well as situations like multiple-actor combat. You need some way to determine each player's position relative to every other actor in the scene. FEF does this perfectly due to the nature of the system, but on any non-grid-based system with codified movement rules, this may be a problem.
  11. So I just noticed that there was a new Power Rangers movie coming out next year and went to check the trailer. First thoughts: wtf are these costumes?

  19. Serene turned and watched as the familiar sound of magical thunder struck close by. Turning, she saw their resident Thunder mage - Terrin, was it? Looking dumbstruck as an enemy fell in front of him, struck by a javelin made of thunder. His previous thoughts were spoken loudly enough for everyone to hear. Grinning, she shouted to him. "Oi, thunder mage. 'why can't the spirits be javelins', I believe was what you said? They can be, if you burn with the desire for it." She held her open, armored hand to her side, and fire briefly appeared in her palm, quickly changing and rearranging itself into a spear made of pure flames. She spun it around her hand several times before sticking it into the ground, causing it to dissipate into nothingness upon impact. "See? Easy as lighting a torch."
