Redstone Gaming Posted July 16, 2020 Share Posted July 16, 2020 (edited) I'm starting off my playthrough blind but I'm not really sure if I should go for Speed Boost Torchic or Protean Froakie. I'd pick the latter if TMs like Ice Beam are of easy access and the former if they're not. It takes quite a bit of time before you start finding strong TMs like Ice Beam you mentioned, but don't underestimate more niche or overshadowed TMs like Nature Power. Froakie is okay in the early game, but not great. Its not until mid-late game that Greninja gets really powerful. Its not bad by any means, but compared to Speed Boost Torchic its not great. Other good options would be Charmander for Dragon Rage+Flame Burst, Mudkip for the excellent ground typing (though with the caveat that it will be a long time before you get a good Water STAB that runs off physical attack, Chimchar, and Fennekin.
