Not sure if you are interesting in Transformers or Mazinger Z as much as Zoids or G Gunam, but you might find this interesting. It does indeed seem to be actually happening.
Very cool! Can't say I'm too big a fan of either, but that's really because I haven't ever watched Mazinger Z and the only Transformers series I've ever seen was Beast Wars! haha.
