I would, indeed. I like when a pokemon game's storytelling differs from the main series. -
The best way to defeat Charlotte is with double flash fire. Basically Charlotte's strategy is about using fire type moves agaonst everything because with STAB + field + sun they hit really hard. However, if you are immune to them, beating the gym is very easy. I remember I used an Arcanine and a Chandelure.

In the forests around route 1 there are places where you can plant berries, although they are scarce and are quite deep in the forest. About fertilizers and planting berries, I have never done it so I have no idea.
