  1. http://nypost.com/2015/06/29/cops-livid-over-proposed-police-reform-measures/ The city council of New York have proposed changes to the way the NYPD conducts law enforcement, much to the chagrin of the police union representative Pat Lynch. Thoughts on this? Personally, with the overwhelmingly negative news that have plagued the police force across the United States as of late, I think the big apple leading the way to start a change is a step in the right direction.
  2. That's what the hope with a law like this passing is going to be. Gay marriage has been legal in the Netherlands since 2001, and it also seems to have the desired effect of a law passing: removal of the stigma in the Dutch culture. I'm Canadian, and homosexual marriage has been legal since 2005. There's next to no opposition these days, except mainly from the Baby Boom generation. I hope, as time passes, the opposition will become quieter in the United States.
  3. Until the 5th circuit court rules it into effect, it seems both Louisiana and Alabama are going to wait until the last second to allow homosexual marriage. The court allows the "losing" side approximately three weeks to make the necessary adjustments to the newly added law. They've got the means to do it now... they're just choosing not to. It's one last assault on the dignity of fellow human beings before being forced to bow to the inevitable. This is how small somebody can show themselves to be.
  4. Alright, I may have been mistaken originally, but it was difficult to determine if you were being rhetorical or not. In today's news, Louisiana is refusing to recognize gay marriage until the 5th Circuit Court orders it to be so: http://www.nola.com/politics/index.ssf/2015/06/bobby_jindal_administration_sa_1.html Parts of Alabama are refusing to issue marriage liscences to anybody, which includes heterosexual couuples, in defiance of the court ruling: http://whnt.com/2015/06/26/some-probate-judges-resume-issuing-marriage-licenses-to-same-sex-couples-others-halt-licensing-altogether/
  5. A lot of Christians like to cherrypick the bible when the argument suits them. The popular bible verse that condemns homosexuality is in the book of Leviticus 18:22: ‘You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination." Though if you're interested in reading up on some of the other crazy shit going down in that part of the bible, have a look at this: http://hill-kleerup.org/blog/2012/06/13/76-things-banned-in-leviticus-and-their-penalties.html Ironically, there's many more bible verses supporting people to embrace your fellow man and to not judge people, as there is only "one true judge". I'll be happy to link some if interested.
  6. At their personal level, I'm sure they would feel their rights are being "violated", yes. But this isn't about a business making cakes; in this scenario, this is a life or death scenario where you only save the lives of people you deem worthy of saving. You can understand how their rights and personal beliefs would be suspended for the sake of everyone getting the medicine, yeah? To say that you're not killing them simply because you didn't pull the trigger isn't correct to say, though. If you have the means of saving someone's life but refuse to based on your belief or opinion, it'd be like you've killed them yourself, would it not?
  7. Agreed. Though you reach a point where you fight for equality, suing a company into the ground when you've got many other options available to you is just as frivilous and malevolent as refusing to let a couple use their land for their wedding, or baking them a cake for their day. Forcing that opinion onto people who, respectfully, don't agree with it violates the same rights they fought so hard to acquire. I sincerely hope we find a happy medium sooner than later. I'm Canadian, and gay marriage has been legal here since 2005. America's population is much, much bigger than New Zealand and Canada. The religious right in the United States has a greater population than both of our countries combined. The bigger the population, the louder the outcry. That's when you try and help. In those situations, when vaccines are handed out to cure a deadly disease, it becomes a human right to have access to said medicine. If you're denied medicine based on your sexual orientation, you're being denied the right to life based on someone else's opinion, and that isn't right. Being denied this theoretical pill that'll save your life and being denied a cake for your wedding, while comparable, are two different issues on two different magnitudes.
  8. Sadly, this is very true as well. Speaking as a Canadian, I didn't hear hardly any stories of children being thrown from their homes based on their sexual orientation, but there were many here, and in America as well. As a family man, I couldn't imagine being cast out of my family based on something I had no power over. I also couldn't imagine how alone those people must have felt/do feel. That's amazing, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Journal is a peer-reviewed source. Though I feel 90 test subjects is a little low and the experiments might require further research, I think it's astounding how they're showing how the brain chemistry is different.
  9. That's fine Sparky. Believe me, you're hardly alone on that front; many people are confused with how important this is to the homosexual community. Being gay has nothing to do with choice, it's something a person is born into. Just like you were born as a heterosexual American in Texas, homosexuals were born predispositioned to be sexually attracted to the same sex. To ostracize people because of who they are is oppression, which is why today is so important. It's another step towards accepting people for who they are at their core. Imagine being denied to date the girl of your dreams simply because society opposed it. That's very interesting. Would you happen to have a link so I could have a look? Physical differences in the brain are really interesting to me.
  10. You understand that this is one of the biggest civil rights changes in modern history, correct? Opinion has nothing to do with the fact that a right has been betowed to millions of people who were denied that right beforehand. Whether or not you deem it important, this is an absolutely staggering change to how society in the United States will view sexual orientation in the near future. There's certainly nothing wrong with a healthy debate between opposing sides on a civil issue.
  11. Well, that's unfortunate. Here's to hoping the state of Texas will soon progress to a time of acceptance of all people, regardless of sexual orientation. I think the response to the post has been civil, truthfully. Nobody's flagrantly attacked Sparky for the post. Everyone's got an opinion that they're entitled to, of that there is no question. Opinions, however, aren't going to be free of criticism. The fact a day like this even exists is testament to that. Sparky has the constitutional right to his opinion, and the opposition has the right to refute it.
  12. With this passing in the Supreme Court, would it be fair to think that if the church is the last bastion of "morality" against homosexual marriage, the credibility of the church itself would be damaged? Pope Francis himself no longer condemns the homosexual people, as he's been quoted as saying: "When I meet a gay person, I have to distinguish between their being gay and being part of a lobby. If they accept the Lord and have goodwill, who am I to judge them? They shouldn’t be marginalized. The tendency [to homosexuality] is not the problem…they’re our brothers." He's a politician in a lot of ways, so it's not certain if the catholic church's ultra-conservative ideology is truly reflected through him. However, should some of his influence ring true, it wouldn't be unheard of that gay marriage within a church could happen. Truthfully, marriage at the hands of a representative of religion is an archaic rite of passage. I don't believe it'd be a total loss if it never happened. If you think that's bad, I strongly suggest you see how homosexuality in Africa is treated in today's world. It's utterly deplorable.
  13. I don't think you know what the word "logical" means, but to each their own. A relationship between two people that love each other implicitly shouldn't have to have gender taken into the equation. With the Supreme Court ruling being close, I'd imagine the religious right are going to have quite the acrimonious reaction to it. During that, it's important to remember how this impacts you. Everyone wanting to "protect the sanctity of marriage" is full of shit.
  14. http://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/jun/26/gay-marriage-legal-supreme-court This is such a progessive step forward in society. As a heterosexual man, this excites me to no end. The possibilities that this could herald are endless. This is a huge, complete victory for the homosexual community. Anyone who knows the stigma of being a victim against "traditional values" has been vindicated.
  15. CAKE - Mustache Man (Wasted) Awesome tune.
  16. Definitely not, no. That Swellow is holding a Flame Orb to activate Guts, and there's no field effect from Grassy Terrain that would otherwise cause flinches. That's very strange.
  17. I'm actually more interested in the fact that Ciel means sky in French. Today I learned. So now starts the thought of whether mon cheri Ciel has a French accent or not.
  18. Let's be realistic here: some fights are going to be easier than others with mono-runs. With the mono-Dark run, you might have an edge against PULSE Abra, but the chips'll be down when you fight other worthwhile fights such as Adrienn and Samson. Speedy fighting types like Blaziken and Mienshao rip Dark-types to pieces. Abra not having Focus Blast isn't going to really change the pace of the battle. This hardly constitutes being a game changer, though. Fight seems to be working as intended.
  19. That's not the right ladder, however. If it's leading you to the Route 3 exit, you're going to have to go the only way that makes sense. Do you know how to post a save file? I'll see if I can't get you back on the beaten path.
  20. This is pretty much spot on. This goes without saying, but I'd imagine Amethyst will include new fields once we're in the desert to further compliment sand teams, and having Pokemon that can take advantage of that (such as Garchomp and Tyranitar) are going to be an absolute nightmare to deal with should you not have a proper answer to the sand. To remain on point though, I agree completely. Solaris' battle was supposed to be personal, I believe. From the moment you meet him underneath the staircase until you're pitted against his Garchomp when you're 30 levels below it on top of Mt. Pyrrous, there's an animosity and tension between your silent protagonist and himself. I'm also biased towards villains that don't mince words; Solaris doesn't fuck around. Having him teamed up with the New World Orderly (lol) did take away from the fight. Teaming up with Julia, while great, seemed slightly mismatched. Also, I find it interesting that there might be some tension brewing between Sirius and Solaris. Sirius calls him an "old fool", and Blake asks how he can tolerate him. I've a feeling Solaris is going to meet a violent end sooner than later.
  21. There were lines of dialouge Fern had on the Beryl Bridge, Lapis Ward, and on Route 1 that indicate he began his journey to compete with us. He began to collect badges and expect admmiration based on his accomplishments in return. I don't think he had any interest at all in attempting to stop Team Meteor. It is an interesting thought though, considering Team Meteor is familiar with Fern fighting them, as we teamed up with Fern in the power plant before Sirius attempted to demolish it. So unless he was operating on his own, Team Meteor would think of Fern as a threat and would have dealt with him accordingly.
  22. Mismagius was really coming through for me this last playthrough. Access to Nasty Plot, naturally high speed, and a broad movepool (Mystical Fire, Psybeam, Shadow Ball) really can apply pressure to opponents. It also makes for a strong lead to set up a Trick Room for the rest of your team. The other ace for me was Sidewinder the Mienshao. Crazy high Speed and Attack make for a great revenge killer. The missed HJK's though... I mean, this game has made me rage before, but I've had some seriously bad luck with missed HJKs. Seriously thinking about going Drain Punch or Brick Break over it.
  23. Jigglypuff/Wigglytuff still needs to survive a hit from Garchomp/Arceus in order to get Perish Song activated. I honestly don't find it that game breaking seeing as though Destiny Bond remains in the game as well.
  24. I think men being in the role of a dominant, stoic person is a contributing factor why their lifespan is shorter than that of women. Whenever the standard of men having to stomach their emotions in favour of appearing more masculine is a ridiculous standard to have.
  25. As a heterosexual, reading these really puts a lot into perspective when I'm not able to relate personally. My roommate is a homosexual. I've heard many difficult stories he's had to endure with not only his sickness but his sexual orientation as well, especially when he was growing up. He secluded himself from the world completely, thinking something was wrong with him. He told me stories on how he'd play Xenosaga for countless hours without eating because he couldn't muster the energy or will to do so. He struggled with his homosexuality for a long time, and having grown up in the country with relatively conservative parents, it only compunded his depression and his inability to accept himself. Though he experienced adversity growing up, he just reached a point where he was either going to die, or he needed to accept that he was gay. Fortunately he chose the latter. It's both amazing and frightening how much pressure society applies on people that break away from the established paradigm. Something so simple as your sexual orientation, which quite frankly is nobody's business but your own, impacts many people tremendously to this very day.
