it is possible to also toxic stall this fight, even through shields. Screens and parting shot/memento also help you achieve that -

You need to chase the thief around, until he actually gives you the painting (underground, in grand dream city is where that ends). Afterwards (once you've restored the broken key), as mentioned above, you hung the painting on the wall and a room is unlocked on the left side! (Btw it was the same in version 12, didn't matter yet tho {kinda}, cuz we didn't have the mega ring yet xD)

If you have the broken key, you'll need to fix it in akuwa town, by turning in some materials at the locksmith there. You will also need to have the painting side quest in grand dream city done in order to actually obtain the stone.
