      Actually... Firefighters literally fight fire with fire if it's a forest fire that can't be contained via conventional means.

      I thought they just chopped the trees to prevent the fire from escalating to another part of the forest

      In some cases they'll actually create a controlled fire to spread toward the active fire in order to smother it out.
