Kai let out a cry as she was knocked off her feet, her hands failing to grab onto anything to prevent her from hitting the ground. Her head hit the car’s floor from her side, the hard impact causing her eyes to tear up only slightly. She failed to move for some time, barely reacting until she saw the Tyranitar hologram appearing.

“Yeah, yeah!” The girl quickly got back to her feet, nodding her head quickly as if her head wasn’t in some kind of pain. “That’s the one, it looks awesome!” She showed no signs of feeling anything abnormal as she waved her hands around in front of her. “Ohh, I can’t wait until they come out.” Kai jumped into her seat, putting on her seat belt as Rob asked. She tapped her head, checking where she had hit the floor the hardest. "Ah, good. I don't need to ask Mama for help."

Rokan scowled at the one-armed woman, trying not to make a sarcastic response to her remarks at his accuracy. His right hand shook in quick, small movements to each side, his bow clearly waving along.

“As if the spirits would actually help me, anyway." Rokan readied another arrow, preparing himself for the nearby Myrmidon.

“Aw, c’mon, it’s Kai, everyone calls me that!” The girl latched onto the back of Rob’s seat, putting her face close to his shoulder. “You’re family, and Mama always calls Karla Kai, so you gotta do the same.”

Kai listened intently as Rob spoke, expressions of cheer on her face as she heard his stories of his family. “Wow, Bob’s got a girlfriend? That sounds amazing, oh I bet she’s super cute and everything! I know Mama’s been feeling a bit lonely, especially since I left her on her own for school so long ago. At least, I think she does.” The blonde girl jittered in cheer as she thought of how lucky Bob had been to have someone. "Why would he shut you out, though? Didja steal his snack at dinner or somethin'?"

“I bet your Mama looks so adorable now, though.” The girl spoke, not exactly observant of the driver’s feelings for the miracle lotion his mother had made. “I hope I get to see her soon.” Kai swayed around, standing up in the moving car without any kind of seat belt to keep her from any impending doom. “Oh, my Mama’s been great, too. She’s been tryin’ out some more scary, cool Pokémon to sell for boys, but I think the materials have been costing quite a bit. I think they’ll sell great, though. I saw this one green monster with a spiky-lookin' head, and it looked awesome!”

  4.

“Hey, I know you!” Kai raised her arm high, waving it as she ran up to the rather large man. “Bob, right? Wait, no.” Kai tapped her forehead, looking through her memories to try to remember their name. “No, that’s the other one. Rob, that’s it!” Kai took a leap before she got close to the bus, landing beside the door before looking at it in curiosity.

Kai ran into the bus, taking a seat close enough where she could hopefully talk to Rob. “I haven’t seen you in so long. How’s Bob been? What about your Mama? My Mama’s been great, last I talked to her.”

Rokan recognized the smell of the charred wood, a thunder spell carrying a hint of nostalgia for the man. He cracked a smile as he thought of those good days, but it quickly left his face as he realized enemies had boarded. “Well, I certainly know how to get corrected.” He let out a short giggle as he remembered his chat back at the bar.

    “Anima, guide me.”

Rokan nodded towards the wyvern rider nearby. “After me.” Rokan reached for an arrow before approaching the swordsman.

Kai lightly shaked the plant creature’s hand, face beaming even if she didn’t get her hug. “So adorable.” She let the Steenee pass by her to one of the cadets behind her, watching her pass on the berries. With a quick spring up, she got back onto her feet before waiting for the elevator ride to end.

Kai caught up behind Betani as they walked to the Space Car, trying to catch her attention with a question. “So, we’re heading where we’re sleeping, but what about you?” The blonde girl quickly spun around her, walking backwards as she spoke. “Are you gonna be nearby? Maybe we can visit you! We might be working together in the future, so I’d love to spend time with you as much as my own group.” Kai bobbed her head to the sides, never looking behind her to see anything coming towards her. "Whaddya say? Maybe you can teach a few tricks to your little newbies."

  7.

“Stay safe, Zeta.” Kai waved good bye as the older folks took the little girl away. While she had no idea of how safe these supposedly “uninvasive” tests would be, she didn’t think much of it. She could trust the Vice President enough.

Falling back towards the group, she noticed the girl behind the door. She looked over her shoulder at the rest of the group, wondering how they knew her beforehand. It was probably nothing important, anyway. "Oh, we're gonna share a house?" Kai bobbed her head to the sides, excited to spend time together with the rest of the group.

Taking another look at the girl, she noticed the tiny creature hiding behind her. “Aww, it’s so adorable.” She ran ahead towards the door, kneeling as she looked at the Steenee, the woman standing between her and the plant creature. “Don’t be shy, we’re all friends here.” Kai extended her arms out, offering a hug to the little Steenee, completely disregarding the girl standing with her arms crossed.

  8.

“Wowie, this place looks great.” Kai jumped out the elevator, looking around at the clear windows to the clear sky. When she saw the Employee, she stopped in place and waved her hand to them. As they motioned towards the door to the side, she took a few steps forward to get closer to it, not making much distance before it opened and revealed the tiny girl.

As she made her greetings, Kai rushed through the door, grabbing Cathode’s hands with her own and shaking them with a large amount of vigor. “My name’s Karla, but just call me Kai. it’s super nice to meet you.” A great big smile was on her face as she crouched down slightly, having trouble raising the short girl's hands too far up. Eventually, she let go of her, standing back up and spinning around to get behind her. "You're one of the graduates, huh? That means you're going with us, right? No need to be so shy, everyone here is great."

The calm sound of water, with nothing else to bother him had began to lull Rokan into a sleep. As his eyes flickered open and closed, his focus began to fade. Even as he began to nod off, he continued humming, unintentionally reciting lyrics he had remembered from his old days at school. Rokan couldn’t figure out where he had heard the words, his mind focused more on shutting down. As his eyes began to shut tight, he could  hear an odd crackling sound coming from nearby. Almost as if it had come from his free hand, carelessly hanging from the railing.

But then a rude shouting from a duo of critics woke him from his reverie, and Rokan reflexively pulled his hand back as he felt an odd shocking sensation. In his surprise, he cried out in surprise. “What the heck was that?” He looked as his left hand, no marks on it despite what had happened. “Probably imagining things again.”

    Rokan_Dastard_Umpromoted.png

Looking back over the edge of the crow’s nest, he saw his two critics, the red-haired lancer and his wyvern. “Hey, I wasn't even that loud!” Rokan spoke back to the man, both hands gripped tightly on the railing. "Eh, fine then."

    Rokan_Hmph_Umpromoted.png

Rokan sat back down on the floor, arms crossed as he grumbled to himself. “Bunch of uncultured idiots. The Sages love my voice. Said I had some of the best pipes in the village.”

  10.

The sound of whistling could be heard from the crow’s nest, as Rokan looked out towards the sea. Given his training as an Archer, his eyes were trained to see as far as he could, so he thought it best to be on the lookout for any pirates. Still, it had grown dull looking over those blue waves, even if quite calming. He put his elbow onto the railing, holding his cheek in his hand as he whistled the hymns he had remembered. Given his volume, it wouldn’t be unheard of for someone to hear him, but Rokan wasn’t expecting anyone to appear.

“I’m sure you got nothing to worry about. I’m not even sure Lestli’s natives are even adept enough at Anima to use one of those things well.” Rokan took another drink from his glass, quickly opening his eyes to find it empty already. “Aw, man.” He nearly got up from his chair to get another glass before the ruckus began.

    Rokan_Hmph_Umpromoted.png

“Yeah, I know ‘em. They’re Lestli?” Rokan took his glass with him, slowly walking over to the man confronting the wyvern rider. “I don’t ask the origin stories of the people I travel with, heck I barely know their names.” Rokan raised his hand up, waving at the redhead with a sarcastic expression. “Hey, sorry, did I get your name? I don’t think I ever did.” Rokan kept calm as he looked back at Dahhak. “But I’m sure you can let out your aggressions towards people in a less crowded room? I don’t think either of us want to get kicked out for making a ruckus. Paid good money for this place.”

Rokan instinctively attempted to drink from his glass before finding it empty once again. “Hold on, I’m just gonna get a drink, you mind not tearing each other apart while I'm gone?” Rokan backed away quickly before making his way over to the innkeeper, digging through his pockets for more coins with his free hand.

“Cannons built to fire magic?” Rokan thought to himself how such a thing would look. Perhaps not far from how ordinary ship cannons look? But how would one use it in combat? Did it fire autonomously or would it require a skilled mage handling it at all times? Rokan leaned back into his chair, scratching the side of his mouth as he thought about this ‘rune cannon’.

But other than that, he had to wonder how the spirits would react to such a device. “I always thought an Bolganone spell backed by replenishable quintessence  was the most you could pull from the Anima spirits.” Rokan muttered out loud as he thought of the great power that must be contained within those rune cannons. “Could a device like this pull even more power from them?" What would the Archsages think of that?

Still, one thought did fill Rokan’s mind that he already knew was true.

    Rokan_Rightful_Umpromoted.png

“That sounds awesome. I want one.”

    Magic_Failure_Ankero_Rokan_Salam.png

Rokan opened his eyes, remembering the conversation he was having with the other two men. Quickly realigning himself to put his arms crossed in front of him, he gave his own words. “I doubt it’d be that easy to reverse engineer a device like that. And even if they could, they’d probably be impossible to mass produce quickly. And if the few that could be made were seen in combat, a skilled group of fighters, probably a few flying units, could board the ship, take out the crew manning the cannons, and get out easily.” Rokan let out a huff as he took another drink of his nearly empty glass. “I wouldn’t be too worried over it.”

“Oh, I just tend to listen to the goings-on of a tavern when I’m without a companion to speak with.” Rokan took a seat at the table, noticing the man’s glance as he looked at his glass. Yeah, and I bet your back breaks when you lift your bags off the ground. “Forgive my intrusion.” He put on a confident half-smile as he placed his glass down. “Though, I’m not of Lestli descent. I live in Sathor. I’m just a man interested in magic, nothing more, nothing less.” The man took a drink from his glass, trying not to glare at the man who gave him that rude look. “So, just share a little? I won’t be long, if you don’t want.”

  14. Rokan_Hmph_Umpromoted.png

“Thanks for the drink.” Rokan took the filled glass from the innkeeper, a light smirk on his face as he took his first sip of the milk. A nice cold drink of the beverage calmed any lingering frustrations the man had with that book he was reading. He let out a sigh as he left an extra few coins for them. "Here's a bit of a tip." With all but his thumb, he slid the coins towards the one in charge.

Rokan turned his head to the side as he heard a conversation happening to the side. He stepped out of his chair and began to walk over to the two. “‘Rune cannons’?” The man spoke loud enough for the ones having a conversation to hear him. “You don’t mind telling me more about these?”

Tick. Tick. Tick. The light sound of a metronome continued playing in the background of the single bedroom. The room had been lit by a combination of a set of candles placed on the desk next to the one patron in the room. His rocking chair moved along to every other tick of the metronome. In his right hand was a hardcover book, the yellow color of the cover beginning to dull from age. His left hand was open with his cheek in his palm, as he looked at the tome’s pages, skimming through the words.

    Rokan_I_SUMMON_THEE_Unpromoted.png

“Ito ay isang...” Rokan concentrated as he whispered the foreign words within the book. He took his hand away from his disinterested face, keeping his eyes concentrated on the lines of his palm. “...Pag-atake ng kulog.” A weak spell given the book’s age, but it should at least do something. Or so Rokan thought, as no matter how hard he concentrated, he was still looking at his empty hand.

    Rokan_Disgusting_Unpromoted.png

In a fit of frustration, he threw the old book at the bed in the room, bouncing off the bed, hitting the wall, and landing back on the mattress on its back, open on one of the more inconsequential pages. He looked at the book with a look of anger in his eyes, before listening to the continual rhythm of the metronome on the desk. He reached his hand to the device, turning it off before letting out a sigh. “I need a drink.” Rokan blew out the candle in his room, the moonlight becoming the sole illumination within the room as he opened the door, back in the somewhat quiet halls of the inn. He walked down the stairs, sending a nod towards Noah, an acknowledgement of his existence and nothing more.

“I’ll take your word for it, then.” Rokan put his bow away, strapped onto his back. “Sorry for the.. little mess at the end there.” The archer shot a glance at the kid that had just decapitated a man with an axe. Certainly would make a proper good executioner. “If the others are fine with it, keep whatever gold he had on him. Sort of a payment for cleaning the place up.”

“I’m getting my stuff back.” Rokan spoke to no one in particular, loud enough for his allies to hear. “I’ll catch up, don’t worry.” The man began to make his way north, paying no mind to the bodies still on the ground, unconscious or lifeless. As he continued walking back, he muttered quiet incantations, barely heard by anyone.

“Give these soldiers safe passage. Allow them happiness in wherever it is they are sent from here.”

“Is that supposed to make me regret what’s happened here?” Rokan shot a glare at the man, his hand gripped tight around his bow. “A disgrace to people of your class. To resort to this just because you couldn’t admit to a one-sided affection. Maybe we should remove a treasure of yours to make sure no other woman would want you.” Rokan brought his bow up, quickly reaching for an arrow from his quiver. “Consider this mercy.”

“Noah, follow our lead!” Rokan aimed his bow, quickly aiming to leave barely conscious. “It’s your turn!”
