After doing a bit of research, the press release seems to indicate Sun and Moon are, indeed, gen 7. Wow, gen 6 sucked. It was so half assed, they didn't even finish it.
I'm not saying I would have bought it (I would not have if it didn't fix the problems of the first couple games), I'm just saying it was their last chance to redeem what would have otherwise been the worst generation in Pokemon history.
And they didn't just botch it, they completley skipped it!
