What is fear?
Many individuals will reply that it is a negative feeling: fear is what causes humans to lose their will to fight, to forget about their duties, to fail at their tasks. This, however, is a misconception: in truth, fear is a key part of the existance of every living being, as it carries with it the conscience of one's limits, the ability to recognize danger, and the basic instict to stay alive. Courage is not lack of fear: courage is the ability to determine whether or not completing one's task is worth the risk of ignoring one's fear and insisting in pressing forward. Lack of fear is none other than foolishness.
There was a time when humans were aware of this: back then, their world was full of gods and angels, as well as demons and monsters. Albeit slightly different from culture to culture, all such beings served one purpose: channeling the fear of humans in ways that could help keep them in line, preventing them from indulging in their own hubris. Fear of the unknown prevented them from using their eceptional intelligence to tamper with the very fabric of reality, from sticking their noses where they didn't belong; fear of the divine punishment kept them from using their extraordinary skills to harm other living beings, and at the same time all those gods, angels and assorted supernatural creatures provided a positive model, an example for humans to follow. For centuries, humans held dear these feelings, and knew the meaning of the word "respect".
But in the present days, because of wars, terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, accidents caused by human error, and daily incidents of murder, humans have forgotten those important feelings. The unknown, the mysterious darkness doesn't scare them anymore, because they only fear their own kin. They don't respect other living beings anymore, because they are too intent in taking one another's life to satisfy their greed and ambition. They don't believe in the gods anymore, because they only worship money and power, their own creations. They have crowned themselves the new gods of a false world, a patetic imitation they themselves created, and are content to live in ignorance, only pursuing their short-sighted goals.
This is the story of a group of heroes who stood up against such a corrupt society.
Title theme: Tiny Bells
EPISODE 1: Heartland Homicide
It was a beautiful day in the prosperous city of Heartland. the sun was shining on the crowded streets, the chirping of the birds who nested on the trees of Heartland Park getting lost in the cacophony of the city traffic. A gentle breeze caressed the skyscrapers, and the gigant heart at the top of the city hall's tower, the symbol of the city, sparkled in the morning's warm light.
But for the students of Heartland's High School, class 2-2, that wasn't a beautiful day. Their homeroom teacher, mister Tenjo, had been found dead and, given the circumstances, the police had started an official investigation. Nobody had uttered the word "murder" yet, but everyone knew that was the main suspect.
It was therefore in a gloomy, tense atmosphere that the new teacher, Anna Reinier, held her first lesson. The two hours breezed through, none of the students caused any trouble, but it was clear, just by looking at them, that they weren't paying attention at all. And who could blame them for that? The death of their teacher was the top story on all the morning's papers, wild speculations on what had happened already appearing on front pages. The 24 students were pretty much in the eye of the cyclone. A cyclone none of them was ready to face.
... And this concludes the lesson for today. Thank you all for your attention.
Said miss Reinier. A tall, incredibly tall woman, with a slender body, platinum hair and golden eyes, many male students would have probably started fantasizing about her almost immediately, under different circumstances. But that just wasn't the day for that.
Since we have 5 more minutes before the bell, allow me to say something. I am fully aware of what is going through the minds of all of you, and I would like to thank you for the maturity you proved in being present today despite it. Professor Tenjo's death was a shock for all of us, but for all of us the worst part is not over yet. Journalists are flocking to the case like vultures and, since it would seem that it was impossible to determine a sure cause of professor Tenjo's death, the most insane, absurd theories are being thrown there: come to think of it, someone has even hypotized that, since his body was still wearing the Duel Disk and Duel Gazer when he was found, then it means that he was involved in an illegal duel when he died! Seriously, how can anybody come up with such a silly theory? Duel Monster is an innocent game that is wildly popular in this city, what is "illegal duel" even supposed to mean?
So yeah, what I wanted to tell you is this: no matter how insane the theories you hear are, no matter how nosy the journalists get, please don't let it get to you: endure it, and we will make through this situation together, eventually.
The bell that signaled the end of the lesson interrupted the speech.
... Well, this is all. Please try and cheer up now, and enjoy your lunch!
And with this, the lunch break was officially underway.
