I think the reason I've never been much of a competitive battler is because Pokémon's metagame has a long history of being over centralized. Many Pokémon have no place competitively due to this overcentralization. And, honestly it's upsetting. I remember when I was a kid, an Karen of the Johto Elite 4 said: "Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon. fucked up now that it's the furthest thing from the truth. It broke my heart when an NPC in Omega Ruby told me: "It's one thing to enjoy leisurely battles, but real battles can be a severe trial. Truly strong Trainers sometimes must be prepared to choose Pokemon that can win rather than their favorite Pokemon." That statement sort of goes against many of the core themes of Pokémon as a whole.
