  1. Gym leaders are certainty not a necessity in games. I can't remember the name off the top but their was a fan game that came out ages ago that was focused on you graduating from the academy and then going into an occupation like Ranger, Police officer etc. As others have stated they have just become a mainstay and are right there in front of you when using essentials. I'm sure most of us would love to see either a new system (like trials) that still have a gym leader vibe. Or something completely unique like (example incoming) a wandering trainer gaining new skills and learning life lessons from other strong trainers on a road to reaching some ultimate goal.
  2. @groniack Piggy backing off Commander's thoughts you could theoretically create your own gym leader system (like what the gen 7 games did) if you wanted to break away from the normal 8 or 16-18 gym system. That of course would come with its own unique challenge of dividing your game with gym leaders not being the end result of a given arc. Edit: With that being said I don't think there is such thing as over doing it and thus never being able to finish your game. You could beat Skyrim in 12 hours or play it for 200+ if you wanted to do all the optional stuff. Just depends on what time frame you want for your game. Took Uranium 9 years to be completed after all.
  3. Mmm. Okay so let me add my 2 cents. Firstly since Insurgence is the game being used to express why the 8 gym system works very well lets remember that the game's post game is almost equal in length to the main story. (Assuming you never got stuck or weren't being a completionist). As my buddy @Nyarth said the majority of the community still mainly makes 8 gym games, but if the gyms and their leaders are integral to the plot you can easily find yourself having way too many ideas for just 8 leaders. As a fellow dev for me its very important that I write out the bulk and general story for my entire game before getting too far in development because I don't want the quality to deteriorate the farther into the game I get. You can always go back and fill in the less important stuff when you get to that point. So in summary if you feel like the quality of your content meets your own expectations make the game as long as you want.
  4. @Star Arcana Guess who just made my librarian character for me. Funny as I was just mapping out the interior for the library.
  5. @TY97mus Funny that you said this as I am a fan of the show. I think you will enjoy the fact that there is already a character in the game that shares a lot of her traits.
  6. @Shadowsusanoo As mentioned this and my dev thread are the last two threads since all future update will just be added to those. I can't make my previous post disappear from the front page. I've already asked mods to remove them but if that isn't possible then they are stuck there until more post from other people come along.
  7. Hello all! This thread will be the home of a series I will be doing called "Dev talks". Each one will be discussing a different concept found in games on a more technical level but still simple enough for those with know coding knowledge to understand. Daily updates will be made so feel free to check back occasionally to get some insight on what its like to make a game as well as talk to your fellow game developers and share ideas. My ultimate goal is not just to make a successful fan game, but to bring the community together to create and share ideas. Table of contents Dev Talk 1:Reputation system Dev Talk 2: Choosing graphics
  8. @groniack I'm actually really happy to see this. I went from occasional fan game player to dev in like a month and for better or for worse I at least made this part of the forums more lively. Still working on the mega thread but it will be up soon.
  9. @Nyarth @Matt_ I could also just make a thread called "Dev talks" and put all of those in there to further decrease the amount of threads. I'm already working on putting all game related stuff into one thread but I'll keep this up for the time being so other people can chime in.
  10. @CynTheSylveon If the policy is one thread per game then this isn't even worth polling and I'll just make a single thread and put all prior post in their. Like you said since some of my post aren't necessarily about my game but more general concepts I was told that I wasn't really violating any rules. I defended my initial reason for multiple post in the gym leader concept thread, the people who have been keeping up with all my updates are probably in favor of multiple post, but I don't want to be some forum villain breaking rules and what not.
  11. Hello everyone. Its the ever controversial dev for Pokemon Empire here again. So to keep this super short, would you guys prefer me to make one or two massive dev logs that would house all my post and content, or continue making individual post for each topic. Just do the poll above and leave a comment below explaining your stance. The winning side of the poll may not be the decision I ultimately make. I know some of you really like the multiple post but it does clog up the front page and I would hate to be taking eyes off other projects that are in the works. Edit: The dev log is up. Idk if its possible but if a mod could remove all my other post (including the devs talks as I will be making a single thread for that as well) from the front page I'd appreciate it, and apologies to anyone that has been shafted for lack of a better word by my frequent post. You live and you learn.
  12. @Nyarth Oh trust me. The game is going to attract a pretty specific player base. There won't ever be a consequence for not doing anything because a lot of side quest type things are optional. But actions made will be rewarding or punishing to varying degrees.
  13. @Nyarth You make a lot of good points and pose a lot of good questions. Part of making a game is to learn from the mistakes of others. As you mentioned almost no game has done a really good job of making the evil team appear to actually walk the grey line. I have a google doc for almost every aspect of the game and the longest section is on these guys. I have answers for all your questions like what power do they have and what people think about them. But let's save that for a future post.
  14. @Star Arcana Just having people to bounce ideas off with and talk to about the game helps me a ton.
  15. @Commander when I decided to make my first post I understood that the model used by every other fangane is to have a massive Dev log with updates. I decided against that because the individual post lead to more people seeing them thus me getting more feedback. Since I don't have any crazy hype trailers or custom art my initial selling point is being the first dev that isn't keeping people in the dark and walking them through the process as they also get to pitch in ideas every step of the way. I do agree that it takes up a lot of the front page, so I'll either make 2 massive threads one for concepts and one for actual progress updates. Or I'll just make a poll on what people would prefer between multiple post or the 2 massive ones. I really do appreciate you being critical. As a side note for the reasons everyone listed above I think my gym leader is far removed from being a Serra clone, and due to her team composition and field effect the battle is certainly manageable but not a cake walk.
  16. @Filthy Casual Yea I wanted a unique type for the first gym and ice was the first to come to mind.
  17. @SilverHelio Maybe you will, maybe you won't.
  18. Disclaimer: If you haven't read the Evil team concept thread or haven't been keeping up with my post you might want to check a few of them out so things don't fly over your head. So I think I've been posting here for like a week now and there is always a handful of you who have been in nearly every thread giving feedback and being supportive. As my "Day 1" supporters I figure I'd let you guys all beta test each public release. Most of you probably know who you are and if your not interested by all means let me know. When we get closer to the first beta I'll just PM you all. Note I have no clue when that will be since college makes my schedule super unstable. Lastly its time to quickly touch on my initial concept for the gym leaders of Pokemon Empire. Assuming you read the evil team concept and know the basics of the plot you know that after the war the people of the Telius region voted in members of a grand council. This council created a new Pokemon league with 18 gyms. But who are these new gym leaders and how were they selected? Instead of giving a general overview I will use one gym leader as an example, most of you know that the first gym leader will be the ice type specialist and this is her trainer entry in my google doc for gym leaders. Gym Leader: Elise Memorable qoute: This world is cold yet beautiful, don't you agree? Type: Ice Past occupation: Figure Skater Special Field: Ice rink Ace: ??? (Won't spoil teams) Bio: Elise also known as "The ice maiden" was a famous figure skater prior to the Telius civil war. During the initial power struggle. She lost her husband who was also her life long skating partner. A powerful trainer in her own right she soon joined the Yoake mercenaries and helped them free the region. The council saw no trainer more fit to be the new ice type leader than Elise. Reluctant at first she accepted, she moved away from the massive city and stadium she became use to to a more secluded place, the snowy city Polaris Point, here she teaches trainers that mankind like ice can be strong and easily broken at the same time. There's a lot more stuff but this is the jist for all the gym leaders, some are related to other characters some have a more shadowy past but this is how I started bringing these ideas to life. Next time we'll be looking at the Yoake mercenaries, who are they? Why are they in Telius and why did they help overthrow the King? Til next time.
  19. @Swamp King Yea for future polls and such I might just link a google survey where I have more user will have more options, like listing 3 choices from most to less preferred
  20. Ask and you shall receive. @Noctelis
  21. @Jess @Noctelis You two have combined to pretty much break down my entire thought process for the concept which I admire. I 100% will be using Team Royale because it sounds great. As far as the frequency of post I just feel like it's an approach devs don't take that they should. Sure keeping fans in the dark is cool but I'd rather have people be able to follow every step of the process with me and give their opinions.
  22. @Noctelis I think I'll end up going with something that doesn't start with "Team" as you suggested. As far as your guesses, the ones for the normal team members are correct, the admins are all theme based not type based and I won't say anything about the "King" but I'm surprised you thought of both possibilities.
  23. @Combat Concern 1: It was originally Team Mythic before I made the chess theme. If I or someone else can think of a better name I'll change it. Concern 2:The League was basically meant to weed out weak trainers and make sure the best were fighting for the King which is one of the many reasons he was overthrown. The elite 4 were pretty much his handpicked knights that enforced his policies. Idk how much I want to give away considering it will be explained thoroughly in the game.
  24. @Noctelis Yea that's fair, thanks for the help!
  25. @Noctelis I noticed this a day or two ago. Can't give it psychic tm's or egg moves for the reasons stated. So I made the one time exception of giving it a move it can't actually learn. I could give it round instead but that's 60 base power
