not counting Nagisa of course.SpoilerBut you know, she's harsh against Shinji because he's selected to become an Eva pilot despite how weak he is, implies that even without trying hard, Shinji's existence has a meaning and he has people care for him.
But all depression phase she gone through allows her to master Eva 02's AT Field.

I was avoiding spoilers btw. I know about her life before arriving to Tokyo-3… just avoiding spoilers.
SpoilerShe's having complex about her own existence since her mother abandoned her. After her mother's death, Asuka tries hard in everything she does, surpassing people's expectations on her. For Asuka, getting praises from others gives value about her own existance. People will look and care for her as long as she perform above their expectations.

Asuka is the founder of the Tsundere archetype, Tsunshun, which is being abusive to people, then shunning themselves for doing it after that.
Just like you, I like her in the early series because of her frankness. Similar to most tsundere, she's very prideful girl with sky high confidence about her ability. Thus, she can't stand frail character like Shinji
which is the cause of her mental breakdown, you'll know later.
