I don't see how someone else's accomplishments necessarily have to devalue your own. What show was he talking about? I mean if the show wasn't saying that he comes off as insecure.
His teacher was giving him that type of speech. The "Look! Mikoto worked hard and got to this point. You can do that too!" speech. To which he replied like this.
