Optimism only leads to disappointment. Life's a bitch, and sometimes I wonder why I even smile sometimes.

While optimism can lead to disappointment, I find pessimism to lead to an existence that expects sadness and thus only receives such things. Sorrow begets sorrow, as sad is it is. I believe in a healthy level of realism! I never expect anything, as over thinking about my reality will only be stressful. Basically, I find that you'll encounter positive and negative things in moderation, but you'll notice what you focus on. So why not just focus on what makes you feel good, yeh?
