Monowater Run Sample [Teambuilding Advice]

Hi everyone !

Welcome to a new sample topic ! Since I've finished runs with Monotype Teams based on the Elemental Terrains (Psychic, Electric, Grass and Fairy). I was thinking I'll continue with weather teams.

Today, I'll showcase the Water Type. However, don't consider it as a sample Team. This team I'll just present Water Types I consider as a good choice for a Monotype Team, and especially if they're considered as "bad" Pokémon.
Let's start !

The Water Type itself

The Water type is obviously one of the best type of the game. It offers key resistances, few weaknesses and a very good unique typing. Let's say it : even a Pokémon with only a single typing can be good, especially for a defensive Pokémon. That's why some Pokémon like Alomomola is OU for example (not the reason, but yet).

Offensively, it's pretty good too.

With only the Water STAB, you can hit 71% of the Pokémon in game (Abilities such as Water Absorb is not taken into account here).

Plus, only Water, Grass and Dragon Types resist Water Type attacks.

So building a Monotype Water Team is pretty easy ?

Dealing with the common weaknesses

A good team must deal with Electric and Grass Types, offensively and defensively.

Dealing with Electric Types is pretty easy.

It's a reliable Pokémon which fits in many teams. Its key resistances and polyvalence allow you to play it as you want.

Defensively, it offers very cool utility moves such as Stealth Rocks, Scald, Yawn, etc.

Offensively, its mega evolution is very cool too. By the way I suggest you to use the rain in your team, since it offers a strong offensive presence.

340.pngWhiscash

It's not a better Pokémon compared to Swampert, but with its Crest it has some utility when you need to deal with Grass and Electric Types. Otherwise its options are pretty limited and struggle to deal good damage outside this situation

423.pngGastrodon

Thanks to its shadow form available during Terajuma story, it's a very useful Pokémon. Thanks to the added moves Scorching Sand and Spikes, Gastrodon is less passive and provides utility for your team. In addition, it acts as an effective Special Wall when it's needed.

For the Grass Type, it's a bit harder. Wiscash help to check Grass Types defensively, but struggle to beat them due to its limited coverage.

But if you're open to the crest which change typing, you have more flexibility.

586.pngSawbuck

With its crest, it becomes a Water/Grass Type Pokémon with a very cool design. With Sap Sipper, it provides a rare Grass Type immunity for your Team. It has a good offensive presence combined with Sword Danse (or Work up if you don't want to catch a Sawbuck with the Technique Contrat). Its Grass STAB deals with Water Types and with the Rain, a Water STAB Return can be deadly.

The main issue is its fragility due to its defensive Stats and weaknesses.

Here is a sample set

Sawsbuck @ Crest
Ability: Sap Sipper
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Return
- Horn Leech
- Megahorn / Jump Kick / High Horsepower
- Swords Dance

Rain Sweepers

A lot of Pokémon appreciate having an enhanced Water STAB to deal a huge bunch of damage, but for now I'll quote only 2 Swift Swim Pokémon since they benefit much more from the Rain.

419.pngFloatzel

I recommend this Pokémon over Barraskewda for 2 reasons

1 : Floatzel is far easier to get

2 : Just Wave Crash

Yep, Floatzel is slower and has a lower Base Stat Attack, but Wave Crash is so strong that it completely compensate these points. Here is a comparison

252+ Atk Choice Band Barraskewda Liquidation vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mew in Rain: 330-388 (96.7 - 113.7%) -- 75% chance to OHKO

252+ Atk Choice Band Floatzel Wave Crash vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mew in Rain: 415-490 (121.7 - 143.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

370.pngLuvdisc

Lol, it's the real reason why I made this topic. It's so frail it can be one shot by a lot of priority moves or faster Pokémon. BUT, oh my ! Its crest makes it so good it becomes a pleasure to play Luvdisc !

I'll show you a classic set for it

Luvdisc @ Crest
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest / Timid Nature
- Scald / Brine
- Icy Wind
- Terrain Pulse / Draining Kiss / Hidden Power
- Flip Turn

With max hapiness, its moves reach 250 Base Power, so it's a good idea to use attacks with special effects. I recommend to use the Modest Nature since Luvdisc still has a terrible 40 Base Stat Special Attack.

But combined with the Rain and the different effects of Fields, Luvdisc can be deadly.
During my run, it was a win condition against Ryland (Thanks Scald), Crescent, Saki, and even the Space Hags (first try) !

Plus, with the rain active, it destroyed all Talon's Paragon Team !

Just try it !!!

Honorable Mention

This section gathers Pokémon that I consider OK tiers. They have their utility but with some time they start getting trouble with some major fights.

478 1.pngA-Froslass

A very good Pokémon to deal with Water Types. It doesn't provide Grass Type immunity and lacks bulk. However, it benefits a lot from rain to unleash devastating Water Sprout on opponents. Pretty good if you manage to get a A-Froslass with Leaf Storm. Plus, using Soak is usually a good move on Froslass. It makes easier for it to deal a good bunch of damage with Giga Drain too.

457.pngLumineon

A very good Pokémon for the Part 1 of the Story. It's mandatory to catch a shadow Finneon to have access to Quiver Danse. With it, Lumineon can be a game changer for a lot of fights. The bad part is it loses interest due to the power crip and there is no Crest to change that.

The Bulky Waters

We reached the last part ! I'll show you here 2 Water Types I consider as pretty bulky, and with utility !

395.pngEmpoleon

Having Empoleon in a Mono Water Teams is always a good idea. With a huge utility movepool such as Toxik, Stealth Rocks, Defog, Toxik or even Flip Turn Empoleon acts as a swiss army knife while providing a lot of resistances and Grass Type immunity. By the way, it's also the best Pokémon to tank Freeze-Dry for the team, a huge threat to the Empoleon's teammates. And with Competitive, Empoleon can provide an offensive presence always welcomed in Rejuvenation.

134.pngVaporeon

A real MVP during a Mono Water run in Rejuvenation. It doesn't provide key resistances to the team for dealing with Grass and Electric Types, but it doesn't matter for Vaporeon. I'll show you the set I used and you'll understand why

Vaporeon @ Interceptium-Z  [Ice / Ground]
Ability: Water Absorb  / Hydratation
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Stored Power
- Wish / Rest
- Calm Mind

With Calm Mind, Vaporeon can be a very dangerous set up sweeper if you manage to set up some Calm Mind. Combined with Stored Power, Vaporeon can deal a lot of damage to a lot of Water resistant Pokémons. And Vaporeon is finally a very good user of the Interceptium-Z. For example Elysia Shield helps to set up Vaporeon more freely and reinforce Stored Power.

It's fini les amis ! It was the Pokémons I loved to use during my run, but I didn't test all Water Types Pokémon, so I may have missed very good teammates for a run, so let me know which Water Types you loved to use during your run ;)
