Broken Encounter in Route 1 and Goldenwood

There are some wild encounters in Route 1 and Goldenwood where my game just goes black. The music still plays, but that's it. 

I've noticed it's not every encounter, as I can encounter Scatterbug and Poochyena just fine, for example, but most encounters it just goes black.
