No Pokeball Challenge

Hi Guys,

I discovered Reborn only a couple years ago but I've trully enjoyed the game so far, brought back so much memories for someone like me we grew up with Gen 1... So first of all, big thanks to the devs. I completed a full run already and was looking for more challenge. Not huge fan of mono-run (I tried poison and grass but didn't push too much) and add the idea of doing this "No Pokeball" Challenge. Which means I am not going to catch any pokemon, only using starter + Events Mon that don't need to be caught. So far so good, this is my team after Corey and you can see the result after Zel Pulse Muk fight. As you can see, I clearly dominated him :)

What's your opinion on the team and good mons I could add? I think I got lucky with Vullaby egg, because I like Mandybuzz as a staller late game with Roost + Toxic, but it is quite useless at the moment. Also not sure I will ba able to breed roost with my restrictions, so I might just bench it now and forever...

I am planing to add Flygon and Gardevoir/Alakazam for Meowstic and Camerupt later. I also have Sharpedo, but it just gets 1-shot none stop before speed boost comes to play. Any help or advise is appreciated.

Thanks

What a cool idea!

I would get your Growlithe going, Intimidate Arcanine is very strong throughout Reborn.

I don't feel like Sharpedo does a whole lot until you get TM Protect and you're able to actually make use of Speed Boost, Reborn is too aggressive otherwise.

Medicham is available at Apophyll Beach, with Huge Power, it was a very strong pokemon for me during my Psychic mono run, so consider that.

Joltik into Galvantula could come handy with Sticky Web, speed control is always a good thing.

Typhlosion, get Cyndaquill from 7th street. Eruption will carry you a long way. He will single-handedly take down Charlotte if you max Speed and Sp.A and give him Timid, because of the field effect you will destroy, even more so if you pair it with Sunny Day Ninetails, who is also destructive on it's own.

Loads of cool options.

Thanks, I might drop Infernape and Meowstic for Arcanine and Medicham and give it a try then. I know Arcanine is great (and fire in general always useful in Reborn) but I never used Medicham, might be a good surprise. And I love Galvantula with Sticky Web / Thunder Wave / Electro Ball / Bug Buzz, but unfortunatly I can't get it according to my rules. Even if it is an Event pokemon, you need to fight and catch it and I am running with no pokeball at all ! Sharpedo might get a place later with the Mega form.

First of all, I believe you are a genius for getting this idea.
Getting pokemon from the casino seems fine to me, that all I wanted to say.
And Gengar is an event pokemon as you know so that's nice.

If I remember we get Gastly really late game right? Or is it still one of the mystery egg pokemon? As someone who grew up with Gen 1, Gengar has a special place in my heart so I'll make room for it in my team for sure. Even if no Thunderbolt and Sludge Bomb TM makes it impossible to run my favorite moveset. I hope Episode 19 will give us all of that.

I got all Pokemon from the casino (had to farm money in Great Hall, why are coins so expensive...), but apart from Nido, haven't used them really. In my rules this is fine as I didn't use pokeball to get them. So technically it is not only Event Pokemon, as some of them also require to be caught so won't be in my team (such as Gourgeist, a shame as I love stallers and walls in general and this one is a nightmare for physical attackers). But I guess you could adapt to your own pleasure. That's what is so good with Reborn, so many way to play it to enjoy it.

Yea so many possibilities. Gastly's event is after getting rock climb, super late. But when you are trading a Growlithe egg with the police officers, they give you a mystery egg and Gastly can be in that.

Thanks, that's what I thought. I got Vullaby as Mystery egg reward, which is not too bad. As I said I love walls and I will try to build Mandibuzz as one, with Toxic + Roost. I actually just realised I should stop levelling it now until I get my egg move. I have a Ducklet so I'll be able to get Roost on Vullaby eventually. Add Brave Bird and Punishment and I should have a lovely annoying pokemon as I like it! Or even Whirlwind to spread Toxic.

I like this challenge as it forces me to play some pokemon and tactics I would have never tried otherwise. Like I just discovered how good Prankster Meowstic is with Reflect + Light Screen holding Light Clay. 8 turns of both screens + psychic STAB allowed it to murder Shade, even with the Dark/Ghost vulnerability... And I will still get new available pokemon for the end game anyway, like Metagross, Gardevoir, Flygon, Lucario or all fossile pokemon.

Fossils yea, puzzles too! I wanted to mention breeding earlier, but I use mods and mess with pbs too much so I felt like it's not my place to talk about that.

But I also wanted to mention that one quest that wants you to complete the pokedex, I'm a completionist unfortunately, does it feel ok not doing that quest?

Well it is the first time I hear about that quest ! So please tell me more. And not an issue really, I have a backup of a "normal" run where I reached the end of E.18 so I can use that to get any pokemon available. But the reward better be good because that sounds a bit tedious to get every single pokemon of 7 generations... And don't worry about mods, everybody plays the way they want. And I am using some for QoL as well, without breaking the balance (like quick hatch among others).

So it's a quest in Agate City. You go inside a house -like anyone cares- and there is a woman on the left (I think a ranger) and a guy on the right. Talk to her and the quest is up.
A guy named "The swordsman" has a post talking on this and I'm copy pasting the rewards: Electrium-Z, Galladite, Froakie, TM03 Psyshock, Groundium-Z, Mawilite and Kangaskhanite and a Poipole.
Honestly, I would cheat the game at that point. But Froakie is probably for 300 entries which may be possible considering this game is huge.

Ok thanks, I actually probably still need to do some quests in Agate city as I stopped there few months ago on my previous run. Galladite is probably the only really nice rewards for the team I use there (A-Ninetales, Eelektross, Gallade, Excadrill, Topaxex, Volcarona) and while Naganadel is cool, that's way too much assle to get it so late in the game. I might have enought to get Froakie though. And if I decide to cheat, then I can as well just add them directly to my party with the console debug mod. But hey, if you are a completionist, good luck with that!

I think you 'll have much fun on this run, the idea alone sounds entertaining. Good luck man. I'm going too because it's getting late. And I had fun talking with you, thanks for the company

You're right! I forgot you had to fight Galvatula and catch it, sorry. That's too bad, I really like that mon.

Sharpedo could come in handy against Amaria in the UW / Water Surface fields.

Reading through the rest of the thread: Gastly is either mystery egg or available after E19 is done. Thunderbolt is actually available in the game right now although through a very difficult puzzle, I can't remember if this is before or after Hardy, but in either case pretty much at the end of the game.

I wanted to complete the game at least once myself so I did the pokedex quest and everything else, Scyther was the worst thing and I actually ended up asking for a trade for it, lol. Anyways, it was pretty fun, but these days I debug most things.

There's also the Starter Egg quest that gives you TM Shadow Ball and other goodies you could look into if you haven't already!

If you feel like, you should record your gym battles and other big battles, like the gauntlets at both Amaria's place as well as the glass factory and lastly at Agate, I imagine I wouldn't be the only one interested in following your way through the game. :)

Thanks, I didn't know for Thunderbolt, as I said I porbably need to spend more time on quests in Agate city. I won't record my journey, I just play for the fun. But so far this challenge is not too hard, there are lots of pokemon available and a good diversity, probably easier that way than a mono run.

If you want a bit of story, this is how my run goes so far:

I fought against Julia with Monferno, Espurr, Kricketune, Budew, Linoone and Igglybuff. Not really hard after all, Technician Kricketune did most of the job.

Then for Florina, I added Numel (for Linoone), Vanillite (for Budew) and Nidoran M (for Igglybuff). Again, not too much issue. After that I started level up Lotad as well, as I plan to use Ludicolo for a while, I just find its double typing super useful

For Corey, I also levelled up Onyx and replaced Kricketune. Got more troubles, but I could kamikaze Numel to 1-shot that annoying Crobat (Lava Plume made the field explode killing all poke) and Mist from Vanillite allowed to control the terrain.

I got Vullaby as egg reward and levelled it to get a flying type for Shelly. So I fought Shelly with Monferno, Camerrupt, Vullaby, Meowstic-M, Lombre (or Ludicolo, don't remember if I had the stone yet) and Onyx. I tried opening with Meowstic and Lombre to put screens on and so she would not put rain dance (or that also benefits my Lombre), but that failed miserably. So I tried again and Meowstic Fake-out allowed me to one shot Illumise with Camerupt and the fight was not that hard after. Again, Camerupt with Lava Plume / Earth Power was the ace of the fight.

For Shade I changed my team again, with Infernap, Camerupt, Ampharos (to use the filed effect), Vullaby (Dark STAB), Meowstic-M and Sharpedo (Dark STAB). Meowstic alone almost won the fight, 1-shotting Gengar with Psychoc and setting up Light Screen for the rest of the fight.

Now going towards Kiki. As you mentioned Arcanine and Medicham, I started levelling them up. I benched Vullaby and started to level up Ducklet to 30 to get roost and breed it for a Toxic+Roost Mandibuzz combo. I rotate between Infernap, Camerupt, Meowstic, Ampharos, Ludicolo, Medicham, Growlite, Sharpedo (bit disappointing with him but I keep it to cheese Garchomp, Arceus, Mewtow... with Destiny Bond + Focus Sash if needed) and Roselia fully leveled up and I started levelling Gothita as well for Kiki's fight. I also consider using Scrafty and/or Croagunk later, they both came with Drain Punch as egg move wich is nice (particularly for bulky Scrafty)

That's it, fun run so far, makes me use pokemon I wouldn't otherwise. And I discovered some really useful ones, like Ludicolo (that double typing is neat), Prankster Meowstic (double screens + Psychic STAB by level up) or Camerupt (slow murder machine with Lava Plume and Earth Power).
