I actually have sort of a rough ranking list for them.... Electric, Ice, dragon, rock, and grass are the hardest runs by far. Electric and ice are just weak types in general to carry a mono run, and the game doesn't give you any good dragon types until a bit later in the story. Grass and rock are hard because they each have 5 weaknesses. I would say the easier types to edge your way into a mono run would be fire, flying, ghost, or steel. Fire is a great offensive type and can alter a bunch of terrain to be really beneficial to your team, flying is a pairing with a huge variation of types and you can generally cover your weaknesses, ghost gives you access to things like curse which can get you out of tight spots and has 2 immunities in normal and fighting,  and steel just has a buttload of resists.

The thing I really love about mono runs is how it really shapes your game. For example, for a steel run fire types are REALLY scary because you don't have many mon that can resist it, and some of your strongest mon (scizor and ferrothorn) have a 4x weakness so they get burned to a crisp at the lightest touch of fire.... it makes for a really interesting game because people like Cal become TERRIFYING while other people like Aya become laughably easy. It makes it easy to have a headcannon about who you are as a trainer and you can choose the dialogue options that make 'sense' for you... for example on a dark run maybe you just be the biggest jerk you could possibly be and take all the 'negative' options, whereas in a fairy run maybe you take all the 'good' options. Just another of the many many amazing ways to enjoy the game!!!

Edit: got a little carried away with the post... tldr I'd start with a fire, ghost, flying, or steel those should be a LITTLE easier!

Fire is mega easy. Blaziken, Typhlosion and when you get Ninetails it just gets silly. The sheer hyper-offensive power can blast through the game so easily and with Seeds to help you through Amaria it's not even hard then, either.

Rock is the same. Lycanroc is crazy strong, Midnight or Dawn (shit I forget the name lol) blasts most things in their path.

For me, Dark was a lot of fun. Psychic was a little easy too, but was a cool playthrough. Delphox really surprised me!

A bit off-topic, I would suggest a Eevee run. Nothing but Eevee and the Eeveelutions. I did that and it was one of the best playthroughs I've done. Was so much fun. Also the Under-420 BST (Only mons at or under 420 BST allowed, Edo's idea) challenge, those 2 runs have been my favourites and I would highly recommend if you need a break from the mono-type runs!

I'm really digging your idea of shapeshifters. That sounds like a lot of fun.

So here is another potential take of it though... our main protagonist kind of shifts and morphs their morals, ideals, and strategies to face the many hurdles on the adventure. For example, we work for the police force during the tangrowth pulse portion of the game, but also end up joining a gang and then flipping BACK to help pay to restore the city... for all this I would say maybe it would be cool if the "cannon" team was equally as shape-shifty... like I'm thinking Greninja (who changes types mid battle), kecleon (who has camouflage to change to the arena typing), ditto (who morphs into the actual opponent, type null (who can change types with the memory you give it), and maybe like porygon (the download ability makes them "match" an opponent) and for the last one castform (who shifts with the weather)

I know this isn't necessarily a list that fits with the "major events" of the game, but I think it would establish you as a player as more of the wildcard and make you different enough from all the other characters in the game, as you literally ADAPT to any situation. I think it would also add a fun level of challenge since you would have a very high interaction rate with the fields and such. Just a thought but if I ever end up doing a "canon" run, that may be what I go for

Tl;Dr: make a team of shapeshifters because as a Canon, you are the most flexible character

Hmm, what bad stuff do we actually do with the gang though? They stole back Pokemon from the old hag who bought them at the black market illegally, so the morals aren't really bad.

I feel like the character is pretty consistent throughout the game as having strong, good morals as we're ALWAYS HELPING. We never hurt anyone, not that I remember at least? The only time I can think of is the Type:Null quest.

However, I do like your idea of a playthrough with shapeshifters, that would be a lot of fun for sure.

Ah you are the first person to say that Corey's mons are not too story-impacting, haha. That's refreshing and its nice to hear a different opinion, especially since I never really saw adding one of Corey's mons as a canonical team member in my own headcanon (that is, until others came and suggested the idea). I also have not seen Ralts suggested I dont think...but I like that! :] Eevee has been suggested several times and I agree with the choice as well. I agree with your PULSE and homage pokemon opinions as I never really saw getting "copies" of the original pokemon befitting of the main protagonist. I do however see the argument for honedge. Wasn't there an even around the Taka section (Reshiram Route I believe) where he says you should take one of the pokemon with you (either garchomp or aegislash)? I could be forgetting correct me if I'm wrong but Taka makes some mention of taking one of them with you to carry on some legacy. I also liked the idea of taking type null but I can see how you disagree :]. And yes I do feel like taking one of the Gang pokemon is a MUST. Mention that in an earlier post and I think most people agree on that lol....But yeah for the most part I agree and it seems to me most of your reasonings come from the hero player saving pokemon or giving abandoned pokemon new homes. I like the sentiment and appreciate it but I do feel like there are other reasons why the protagonist might take some of the other pokemon :] Either way, thanks for adding! And I like your list :]

Garchomp and Honedge are found at different locations, his point on legacy is because Garchomp is their family Pokemon, right? Or am I misremembering a link between Taka and Honedge? Besides the fact that Taka is just present when you find it and that it's a "King Arthur & Excalibur"-type situation?

Silvally is one of my favourites, but I don't like how we're a part of chopping up different Mons to create it. Giving Mons to some back-alley "scientists" just urks me..

Ddance is a relearn so it wouldn't be til after Aya, and quake doesn't do much for you when Wasteland nerfs it lol 😉

But yeah, they replaced Drilbur in the police egg with Trapinch (and Phantump with Litwick) so trading an egg over is just a backup plan in case the monodragon password opts for the 50/50 in favor of Axew rather than the antlion. Honestly the change is fair, Excadrill has always been extremely good and even lack of good steel STAB until post city restore doesn't really hold it back when it gets SD/EQ by level up...

Oh yeah, I forgot about the Eq nerf, I mixed it up with Stomping Tantrum, that's right. Woops.

I've always found Flygon oppressive in the game, but like yu said, it's only after the relearner and you get D-Dance. Had to check back up on it, too long since I've used it lol.

Definitely agree it's a nice exchange over Excadrill. Is there going to be an extra Steel-type added or is Bisharp the only one now?

But why do you want the early Trapinch over Axew? Can you still trade your way to a Trapinch in Chrysolia in E19? Wouldn't you rather have both instead of 2 Flygon's?

    Unless I misunderstood your post.

How do you plan on handling Serra? Wouldn't Axew be preferred over that x4 weakness Flygon has (that is, if they changed the Trapinch trade)?

I haven't gotten to dragon mono run yet so I haven't planned anything, curious about your strategies!

Swablu is available from headbutt trees, I believe the ones in Seacrest's garden, as of e19.
The only way I can see a dragon starter working is if monodragon guaranteed the police egg to be Trapinch and replaced the Espurr/Munna with Axew, like how ice/rock do with Swinub/Aron. Trading over a lv5 Axew and hoping for Trapinch from the egg was how I was planning to do my dragon mono, at least, or trading over a Trapinch egg if the police egg ended up Axew. (I plan to run every monotype at least once. This is going to take many, many months given the length of postgame lol)

Bug has Kricketot available without battling any trainers with careful movements. Not to mention you can just go throw balls at Spinarak outside the Grand Hall at night before even moving out of Opal Ward. (Or Combee/Pineco with easyhms password for headbutt trees in the same spot.) Not to mention there are no real starter-equal bug types that wouldn't already be available very early besides Venipede, which would be pretty oppressive early on for similar reasons to Torchic. (Speed Boost + Iron Defense as Whirlipede's evolve move + Baton Pass as Scolipede's evolve move means he has insane utility even without access to SD and Poison Jab + Earthquake until late)

Hadn't seen the Swablu change, that's awesome.

Starters always stay on my roster on certain playthroughs and I know it's a silly detail whether it's caught outside Grand Hall or given inside.

I know it probably seems silly, but the RP'er in me just loves the idea of a genuine starter. Even if it's a Caterpie. You know?

Early Trapinch seems dangerous, too. Imagine that thing against Aya? IIRC it would have access to EQ+DD at that point, right? Nasty.

  6. And by the way, look at the first couple replies in this thread directing the OP to a spreadsheet created on the forums.

That, too, is telling of how unfriendly and inefficient this system is. :)

what on earth are you on?

    Nes%20manual%20bags%20001(1).jpg

That's back from the 80's. Reborn comes with a "readme" file, with "READ ME" literally in the name. You're fighting really hard to justify either your laziness or to hide you are embarrassed you're straight up wrong, but you're just making it worse. You are totally in the wrong, just cut your losses and accept that. Nobody is trying to make life harder on you, you're doing that to yourself with your ridiculous claims and trying to stand on a soap box taller than yourself.

Including control buttons, maps and potential strategies aren't the same as including what's supposed to be "easter eggs.," or QoL mods.

    Could you give an example?

I've played various games at a high competitive level, I'm used to doing team practice, strategy analysis as well as PTR testing in order to stay ahead of the curve on release day. Don't talk to me about laziness lmao. That is not the same as having to read through a list of passwords for simple QoL changes when it is far better to include that into a simple and easy-to-use UI inside the game. And read below, I have no problem admitting to mistakes. We all fuck up, I just don't believe I'm wrong in this instance.

And again, none of this gives a reason why passwords are gate-locked features. Your reason is "they're easter eggs!" - so why would they be included in the manual? If they're meant to reward you for reaching certain milestones within the game or for exploration, why are they included in the read me? That's not what easter eggs are. That's distinctly the oppossite of easter eggs. Furthermore, can you give me a couple examples of easter eggs that drastically changes the game the way these QoL changes do?

That's like saying the Department Store Stickers are easter eggs, too. Lol. Smh.

Also, easter eggs aren't typically (if ever?) restricted behind something akin to their Data Chips-system. They're nuggets of lore or a homage that are found by exploring games. That's been my experience, at least and I welcome examples that shows me otherwise.

Why wouldn't I simply just add in the mods myself instead of going through the hassle?

Pokemon Redux did it beautifully with their Hardmode, Randomizer, Item ban, etc features. Why not do the same?

What's the reason? What's the harm in allowing newcomers access to QoL mods? Challenge mods? Why lock those features behind a gate? Why not create a way to activate them like Redux did, so you 1) don't have to read through forum posts to find them and 2) don't have to read through READ ME for these mods?

Why even have Options in the game? Smh, just learn to code and change it yourself! Why even have Controls inside the game? Just include it in the READ ME and if people want to change controls - just learn to read code and change it yourself! Stop being lazy, people. Come on!

But hey, keep attacking me instead of making your arguments. If anything, you're really just letting me know you don't really know yourselves, because so far, you haven't answered anything at all.

I've seen it over and over and it's the same thing. Gate-locked features and content implemented purely to keep people on the hook. It's a sad and cheap trick.. and way too commonly used by developers :/

No, they're not now supposed to come with a manual.

They have always come with a manual.

You're right, I should have specified that I didn't equate these to reading through controls explanations and options. That's on me. I should have worded that differently.

Also, your only arguments are games from the 80s so far, are you saying we should stop improving? I know "everything was better in the 80s" but I thinik that's taking it a bit too far.

Second, games are now suppoised to come with a how-to manual and homework?

I think its clearly you who misunderstands and needs to take more time to understand something properly.  Both you and the OP need to realize a few things. Setting aside the spreadsheet "cheat sheet" :

Passwords are more or less Easter eggs/QoL stuff, that rewards you AS YOU PLAY THE GAME. You can find those passwords sprinkled throughout the game through exploring and talking to other characters. It rewards you for playing the game well, and so in turn give you some ways to make your life easier, especially since the game as a whole is meant to be played multiple times thanks to route splits. These passwords make the game easier in some cases, challenging in others, and even fun depending on what the player chooses to do with and make use of the passwords.

The passwords provided with the game are some freebies that you get right off the start of your adventure. There is way more than that, but those should be earned. Yes, you can google and search for additional passwords, but that's not the true spirit of the game, and frankly trying to tell someone you hope they "properly" implement your misguided understanding is just plain bad taste.

Yes, QoL stuff. It should be an easy option to enable at the start. I can get behind the challenge stuff as it mostly applies to players who have completed the game before. But even still, I know a few seasoned Pokemon players who I've introduced the game to who love mono runs and jumped straight into them on their first go. What would the harm be in allowing them the mono-X-type password right off the bat? Why should it be a requirement to have to run through the game previously?

Both of them basically used mods in order to achieve the same thing.

Gating these features is only done to force people to keep playing the game. It would be nice if this was above that kind of "content." It's sad.

And by the way: You can't tell me the true spirit of passwords is to reward you as you play with "easter eggs (lol)" and then give away passwords before the game has even started.. that goes directly against your own idea of what they're "supposed to be." That's contradicting yourself.

It's a common and cheap tactic used in maaany games to keep players inside the game as long as possible. Can we at least not pretend it's anything but that?

  9. Ehhh, depends how you view Mono runs. I personally find it cheating to be using a Charizard before being able to Mega evolve it into Zard-X.

Also, where and how is Swablui available before Julia? Is that something new in E19?

Which means there's only really Noibat available. And you have to go through a lot of trainers (=XP) to get it. So why not add in an actual dragon starter?

Honestly, bug, too. Why not do it?

    Besides laziness, of course..

  10. Anything that requires you to look outside the game in order to find out what it is, is pooly designed.

Look at it from the perspective of someone new. That person really shouldn't have to have 3 spreadsheets open just to play the game. That's not a friendly environment. If that's what you want, fair play. But it's a bad model to go for. You need to explain it and offer up easy-to-use UIs inside the game to make sure newcomers do not get overwhelmed by the amount of prep required just to play. And think how disheartening it is to find out later on what they mean, and then either having to grind for data chips or restart your game to activate some simple Quality of Life mods.. I'll say this, if that was me my first playthrough I would have quit then and there and not looked back.

Furthermore, QoL changes shouldn't be gated behind anything. Data Chips? The fuck is that. Why am I not just allowed to apply mods/challenges when I see fit? What's the thinking here, you know, besides making people spend more time grinding?

And, with respect, if I can't just activate whatever I want I'll just get mods that allow me to do so, without having restrictions like Data Chips. I appreciate the thought but your execution is wanting. The point of mods is to make life easier.. to cut down on the grind so we get to play the parts that matters, the parts that are fun and interesting. However if the system is kept as is, I would bet big money that there will be an increase in demand for mods like they used to be. Drop a folder and enjoy. Your job is to make it at least as easy or easier than that.

    Grinding is not content.

At the start of the game, just like what's done in Pokemon Redux, just offer up a Yes/No question "Do you want to add mods or challenges?," pressing Yes opens up a new tab that let's you pick whichever mods and challenges are available.

Drop the Data Chips. It's pointless and a waste of time. And then drop the "passwords"-idea (it's bad) and implement the above.

It's in Redux. The fans of your game have literally told you exactly how they like it, EXACTLY how they want it.. why not listen? :/

    It's that simple..

Sorry. Just read the message through and realized it came across a bit hostile. I was really excited to hear they had implemented these QoL changes, added in challenges into the game and then it's rather disappointing to find out the manner in which it's done. It's.. sad. Unprofessional, even. And honestly gating the features is straight up disrespectful to the players in my opinion.

It's still a beta version so I am hoping Ame learns and implements these features properly.

Yeah I have been saving my seeds till late game because early game gym leaders I do not need them, I may not even have to use a strat against Charlotte as in the past I kind of just wing it, I just enjoy sand teams so I was just wondering! If you have a Rockruff or a Roggenrola extra I would love to try those strategies! Or if you know where to find them!

You get Roggenrolla from 7th street, it's one of the stolen Pokemon. Rockruff can be found outside Agate Circus when you get there.

  12. 7 hours ago, FayTAV said:

Also if anyone has a Tyranitar/Excadrill or their pre evos (preferred) they could trade me that would be amazing!

Those are a far ways off. A better strat against Charlotte is a max speed EV Typhlosion with Eruption spam. Use her own field against her. Get speed control with Tailwind and you can sweep her easily. Besides, her Rotom puts a stop to your Excadrill EQ spam. If I recall, Rock Slide is a TM on Exca, right? It's not learned naturally? Since it's doubles, you need something that survives your own EQs while coming in to deal with Rotom. It can be done but is unnecessarily difficult, there are easier strategies to use against her. Lycanroc are also heavily recommended. If you want to cheese with Trick Room then Gigalith sweeps her, too.

Abuse Seeds to deal with Amaria.

  13. I don't feel like Corey's mons are that significant`to the player, like at all. It would be far more significant to Heather than the player.

Ralts however is a good addition. We've been carrying around the corrupted pokeball for a massive part of the game.

Eevee, too. I know it's a bit out of the ways getting it, but I think finding an orphaned Pokemon fits as the character is helpful, empathetic and overall good-hearted. That's been displayed over and over, so keeping Eevee seems fitting to me. Same reason to keep Ralts.

I disagree with Honedge, not sure if that represents anything significant at all.

Same with Type:Null, I'm not a fan of how we get it by essentially handing over Pokemon to mad scientists.. if we rescued it? Sure. But we're responsible for it's being.

Gyarados, too. I don't see why that's meaningful, I would think the player would want nothing to do with a scammer, to be honest. If I didn't know there'd be a big reward at the end I wouldn't have paid him any attention after the first encounter.

I don't see the Mimikyu or the PULSE argument either. You're talking about a homage but the Pokemon themselves holds no other meaning than simply and only being the same species.. if we got to save the PULSE mons and keep them? Definitely. If we got Shade's Mimikyu (or another one of Shade's mons) then absolutely. But other than that there's no special relationship between the Pokemon and the player. We don't rescue them, we just find them.

I think the Zangoose/Pachirisu event has meaning. It's being bullied and abused, we save it.. I think that matters quite a bit.

Houndour/Cavanha has significance, too, I think. The gang matters, a lot. So a representation of our chosen gang is a big deal.

A case could be made for the Stolen Pokemon quest. In order to keep it challenging maybe allow to pick 1 to keep?

    Starter

    Zangoose/Pachirisu

    Growlithe

Mystery Egg (although, again, out of the way, but it's significant to the players character in helping out the officer)

    Houndour/Cavanha

    Eevee

    Ralts

Garchomp (RIP Taka, the only character I can stand to be around in Reborn.)

    Absol

I think that's it. Wild Pokemon doesn't make sense to me unless you find them, like Emolga and Pichu etc but even they don't hold a lot of deep meaning..

  14. 10 hours ago, Aironfaar said:

Fair, but please consider this: Until E19 has been fully released, you technically aren't playing E19; you're testing its beta version. Repeating what you've already gone through in previous iterations is also part of testing, because there's always a chance that those segments have been changed or accidentally affected by an update.

By the same argument, any and all mods are against the purpose of this beta test phase because they all change the game that's supposed to be tested. That's why I only released mods so far that are fairly contained in how they change the game. Due to their limited scope, it should be relatively easy to trace errors back to my mods if they were the cause, which means these bugs would be reported to me rather than the Reborn devs. Meanwhile, with debug functionality, it is super easy to e.g. innocently walk through a wall to save time because the regular path is already known from a previous playthrough anyway, only to miss a seemingly unimportant event on the regular path that would've changed a variable that you'd need changed to progress later on. What's worse, this variable might become relevant way later in the game, when the shortcut through the wall is already long forgotten, which might lead to an erroneous bug report that will take time and effort for no gain. I'm not saying you specifically would do this, but given the way the devs phrased their "please don't overdo it with the modding, and *please* don't use debug stuff", I have a hunch that such bug reports have been painfully common in the past.

I hope I didn't come across as preachy or so, but maybe the above makes it a bit more understandable why debug stuff is not being unleashed yet.

Oh no, not preachy at all. I do understand your point. I just disagree with (at least parts of) it.

What about a debug mod that pourely let's you reconfigure EVs/pokemon stats and so on? The grind is real and after so long, it isn't worth my time. If the purpose really is to test, a type of sandbox mode like that is only beneficial as it allows us to bypass the grind. Look at PTR testing in World of Warcraft, as an example. Whenever something new comes along you don't make people start from the beginning, it would take too much time.

If you really want proper testing you need to allow them to start at certain points within the game, with whatever mons + stats they want so as not to waste time.

That's how you test. You build in a type of sandbox/debug mod for easier testing.

I was personally looking foward to trying out all the new early game stuff and would have loved to run through it, but I'd rather wait with exploring if I also have to go through the tedious grind.

    Just my opinion.

  15. On 4/20/2022 at 4:28 PM, Aironfaar said:

While I understand that and released the debug portions of my mod to enable players to focus on the parts of pokémon games that they enjoy most (that's how I myself used it too, after all), E19 is currently in open community beta. Skipping content by using debug functions (which the walk through walls mod falls under, too) is against the spirit of such a testing phase, especially since you can't be sure whether or not an alleged bug you encounter while playing was caused by going off the rails with debug functions, which can lead to erroneous bug reports.

This is also why the dev team has expressed that they'd rather not people use debug functions and mods altogether during the test phase. To respect that wish, I won't publish mods that unlock debug functionality until they are ready for it.

Very disappointing, to be honest. I've played through the game enough times to know I'm very much with grinding EV stats and doing the more time-wasting puzzles of the game (iolia valley, crustle, devon corp etc, seriously could you possibly have us run in circles any more than you did? jeez.).

I'll just wait for the full mods to be released.

Unless the Dev team just wants to include it themselves *fingers crossed*

Aaah I see. Can't do anything about that though, sorry, changing the font colors would require modding the game, and given what I'd have to do to do that, this would probably turn the texture pack into a compatibility nightmare.

Really? I already have that.  Someone was kind enough to make some graphics for me that changed everything to black bg with white text.

Like that. White text is great too. The dark yellow/gold is just 'dream scenario' sort of thing :P

you know you could literally just look up the gym puzzle if you really can't do it

I've run through the game.. a lot. I know the puzzle. I don't like doing the puzzle and would therefore prefer to simply skip it.

I have bad eyesight and it always takes forever to move the pieces because of it.

Do you have any examples to give me ?

I was just looking at the first 3 screenshots in the main post of the topic, there's loads of text with white background and black font. I was wondering if there is a version/options available to make it the opposite - black background with white font (or gold/dark yellow font would be even better!).

The UI looks beautiful. Would love to use it.

Thanks for the feedback, that's time for Excadrill to shine then!

And thanks for respecting the way I play, even if it means "cheating" in the eyes of many. Yep, Gourgeist beat Garchomp with WoW, but I could have cheesed the fight with Murkrow or Carvanha anyway, so at least I had fun there!

I don't think we will ever agree on the TM availability, but in my opinion we should get them all at the circus. By then most of your mons are in the 60s which is were they get their full "natural" moveset (bar some of course). At this point you can have Excadrill, Diggersby or Swampert with EQ who are S tier in my eyes, so giving it to Nidoking for example would not break the game. But then it means you could also give it to Lucario or others to create OP monsters, so I get your point. Anyway it is just an example, does not make the game less enjoyable and I understand you can have a different opinion.

    > so at least I had fun there!

And that's really the only thing that matters!

  22. The big TMs are available late-game because the game is meant to be hard and quite frankly, it's already pretty easy.

Adding Calm Mind to Sylveon makes it a powerhouse and able to sweep gyms almost solo, if not solo.

Adding Earthquake early would make so many Pokemon absolutely busted and able to sweep the game on their own. And it doesn't force you to run Flygon or Excadrill or any other. EQ isn't a necessity, quite far from it.

Or for example the Gourgeist with Will-o-Wisp. Did you add that before or after fighting Garchomp? How would the fight have looked without it?

But it's your playthrough! So just add the TMs or the moves you want. It's a private game afterall and it's meant to be played however you want it.

I've actually found a well rounded team to be a harder playthrough as the gyms are all mono-type you tend to rely on 1-2 mons every fight, and the rest can quickly become dead weight against certain gyms.

Anyways, it's a very solid team. As suggested already, I would look to replace Diggersby (as much as I love the rabbit) and Scrafty. They're pretty slow and require set-up to really function. Since you like set-ups, maybe make use of your Excadrill Sand Rush and get your hands on a Sandstorm setter. That'll do some serious work for you, especially when you start using Seeds to their potential.
