I consulted my sister, who is the main reason I watch anime, and I'd have to agree with you on the point that it's a troupe. I think my original reason for mentioning it was less about the idea, and more about the impact.

I really, really hate the annoying high pitched voiced characters in any shows, game, or movie and anime was just on the mind.

I really hate those types of characters as well, they are very very useless to the plot.

You watched BRS. You have my respect.

But seriously though, it´s pretty easy to find anime that don´t fit this trope. And boy, are there some jewels among them...
