Random Cold Steel thought #16: you know, Jusis makes a damn good point. Selflessness IS unnatural: every living being has a built-in survival instinct, so putting someone's well-being over your own is something extraordinary. Therefore, if you CONSTANTLY try to be selfless at all costs, you'll come off as arrogant, as someone who is just playing the hero to be praised.

Actually, altruistic behavior is present in virtually all social animals. It's self-propagating once it reaches a certain amount of spread in the population since typically altuism happens at a low relative cost to the giver and a high relative gain for the reciever. Being on both sides of these exchanges improves fitness.

Selflessness in the short term often leads to a stronger whole in the long term, while this idea also works, often time the supposedly selfless action is somewhat designed and enacted for the benefit of the one carrying out the action and their whole in particular through gratitude and a desire to return on a debt.
