Aside from coming off as a bit abrasive, I honestly don't get the dislike of your rival in the Gen I games. He honestly comes across as pretty pleasant across the board, and despite being a sore loser he never really goes out of line. He even calls you pal.
I always really liked him tbh his sense of humor is so bad... I mean, "smell ya later?" wtf is that lol. I think a lot of the dislike may come from him being eternally one step ahead of you; it makes all his teasing a little more along the lines of bragging, maybe?
